Re: Blu-ray You Last Bought/Watched
Been on a massive Criterion binge over the past few weeks.
This week I've watched Soderbergh's 'Traffic' - Saw this in the cinema when it was release, and have always enjoyed this film. Still works.
Truffaut's 'The 400 Blows'. First time I'd seen this. Fantastic.
Then Altman's '3 Women'. First time seeing this too. Not any kind of lucid narrative, but still works very well. Great film, and great performances. Duvall was wondrous.
Just finished Cassavetes' 'Love Streams'. Not a bad film. A little clunky at times.
On the way from Amazon I have Soderbergh's 'Che', Lee's 'Ride With The Devil', Truffaut's 'Day For Night', and Nolan's 'Following'.
Non-Criterion titles on the way:
Munich
Persons of Interest: Season 4
Spike Lee Joint Collection, Vol. 1: 25th Hour / He Got Game
Spike Lee Joint Collection, Vol. 2: Summer of Sam / Miracle at St. Anna

So, I'm experiencing Chris Nolan's self made debut for the first time - Following - from 1998, via a Criterion blu-ray.

Too bad destiny only allowed for one actual Batman movie in that trilogy....

Re: Blu-ray You Last Bought/Watched
I'm considering purchasing "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" on bloo. It's $9.99 at Amarzon and it's both parts put together on one disc and they are calling it the Seamless Cut. 10 bucks is pretty cheap considering each movie individually came out for around $15 each. Plus, it comes with new commentary and tons of extras.
I know this is the "last movie bought" thread. My bad.

Finally got around to watching GDT's Pan's Labrynth.
Wonderful film. Wasn't as much fantasy as I was expecting, which is what initially put me off viewing it for so long. After watching it though, I wish it had more.
Highly recommended.

Sorry I didn't see this before Joey but I recommend that purchase as I really enjoyed both movies.

That's a bit of some crazy timing, this morning I stacked all of my GDT movies next to the PS3 to watch over the weekend. It's been years since I last saw Pan's and decided to re-watch it myself.
Ofelia grew up quite nicely. Ivana Baquero has a starring role in the new MTV series The Shannara Chronicles.

Just popped the Criterion release of GDT's The Devil's Backbone in the player.
Watched the original King Kong (1933) last night.
Fuck it was good. Hadn't seen it since I was a kid, and even then all I could remember was the building climb/planes scene near the end. For an 80 year old film it still holds up well. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Two great movies.
I too watch a lot of classics but sometimes I can't help but think that every single person onscreen is dead. Its kind of a surreal moment. But so many classics are still awesome 80 years later.

I do the same thing. I even did it during KK. Can't help but think that everyone is dead.
The Devil's Backbone was fantastic. Had some creepy moments to start, but didn't stay that way. Great performances from the kids.

Re: Blu-ray You Last Bought/Watched
I'm actually holding off for 4K. I don't know how big it will get, but my 40" Samsung is 6 years old and gives me problems off and on and 4K TV's are getting cheaper and cheaper. Fox has announced a few titles that are supposed to be released probably next year at this point in UHD BD/BD combo packs. If all studios keep that trend, I'll buy the newer and remastered movies I want that way. Until then I'll just get TV shows and movies that were lucky to get a BD release, such as Airheads.

Re: Blu-ray You Last Bought/Watched
4K TV's and players are popping up, but they're not going to be of use for a while.
Whilst I have no problem future-proofing, your TV may be 6 years old, but it'll be another 6 before 4K is the standard across the board. Heck, at the rate technology is going, in 6 years 4K may very well be superseded.
Also, in the 6 years since you bought your TV, the market and tech have changed so much that you could buy one now, the same size, with better build quality and features, for half of what you originally paid. Maybe less.
Whilst 4K sounds great, without 4K media, anything you watch is simply upscaled. Like watching a SD DVD on a HD TV. It's improved, but not enough to rush out and upgrade everything right now.
Also, with Blu-ray not really selling the way DVD did (some major stores barely carry them, and still stick with DVD's), it's doubtful manufacturers will want to put money into another physical media. They'll do it, to advance the technology, but it won't be for consumers. Stores just won't be able to sell them.
4K, if and when it comes to the forefront of media delivery, will be digital (online/streaming). It will not be physical media.
Heck, in 20 years time, if companies still sell film/TV via physical media, it'll be a digital file on a USB stick or memory card.
Edit: Also, regarding this comment
Remastered won't mean a thing. Whilst some titles will get a remastered tag, they're only going to digitally touch up the existing copy.
Sure, companies like Criterion that scan and convert the original film negative, will produce proper remastered versions - but the average film, especially those not shot on digital, will never get a true "remaster". Way too cost prohibitive. Simply a touch up and repackage to get your money.
The big sellers? Star Wars, etc? Sure.
Airheads? Not so much.

Re: Blu-ray You Last Bought/Watched
oh no, I know all that. Shit, just like 3 years ago if not longer you could get a new TV the same size for half the price. I know 4K/UHD isn't gonna be the standard, but it is coming up soon. Players and discs are being announced (without hard release dates). I'm not saying I'm gonna upgrade soon, but I'm keeping it in mind.
I made it a point that I know movies like Airheads won't come out in UHD, but a number of movies have been remastered in 4K lately. The 3 Sony Supreme Cinema releases announced so far are all from new 4K masters, Fox just released 25th anniversary edition BD's of Edward Scissorhands and Home Alone from new 4K masters...when I hear about shit like that, I'm just gonna wait for a UHD/BD combo like the others Fox announced.

Re: Blu-ray You Last Bought/Watched
Just finished watching Amazing Spider-man 2.
It took me ages to buy this because everyone kept saying it was crap, then the Sony thing happened with their own people saying it didn't do good etc. Even then I only bought it a couple weeks back because I hated having part 1 but not 2 in the collection, and it was on sale ( about $8 ).
It is, hands down, the best Spidey film to date. This shit was good. Garfield was great. Stone was great. The VFX were outstanding. Electro looked fucking insane. Foxx owned that shit. Loved it.

Neither was I, actually. I had a mate that was obsessed with it (and Gillian Anderson). I finally watched a season when they started hitting VHS, but they took so long to come out between each set, I just lost interest.

I was the same way, I was still a kid when it was really popular and I just never watched then years later I attempted a series run through. I Believe I made it 6 or 7 seasons in and then just lost interest and never finished. That was several years back, I'd like to say I was planning to revisit since the new series is about to kick off but I'm pretty sure as long as I know that the Truth is Still Out There then I'll probably be just fine.

Watched Low Winter Sun over the past 2 days.
I remember when this show came out. I watched the first episode or two but didn't think much of it, so I let it be.
Picked up the complete season Blu-ray on the cheap recently. This turned out to be damn good. Best thing Mark Strong has ever done. Lennie James was his usual solid self.
Nice surprise to find James Ransone and Billy Lush back together. They shared a Humvee in Generation Kill, which I re-watched just last week.
