Local retailer was having 20% off Blu's, so I picked up Game of thrones S4, and Homeland S3.
Sorry Gaz, the Australian releases don't have digital codes.

Haha. Yeah sorry mate. I wanted to get the US version, but with the currency exchange rate + international shipping - the 20%-off local price was too good to pass up. Saved myself about $30.

Spent my day buying car parts, eating chicken & rice, drinking beer, and binging the shit out of Homeland Season 3.

Finally got around to watching my Criterion release of Linklater's Slacker last night.
Great flick, and looked good too. Last time I saw it was on VHS. Criterion did a great job considering the source material.
Definitely see Kevin Smith's inspiration for Clerks.

Re: Blu-ray You Last Bought/Watched
Just finished watching Cold In July.
Had never heard of this until it popped up at Zavvi as a steelbook, and grabbed it on impulse. Couldn't watch it though as it wouldn't play on my old player. Now I have a decent player, I tried it out, and it worked.
What a great flick. Never cared for Dexter, but he delivers in this. Sam Sheppard and Don Johnson are great. Starts out one way, turns into something else, and delivers. Unexpected surprise for me. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
My type of flick.

I talked about this one on the other BDTV, not sure if you were aware but the long blond haired guy playing Freddie Russell was Wyatt, son of the great Kurt Russell.

Cool. Didn't know that. Great flick. Really surprised me.
Currently watching Vulgar.
Haven't watched this in a while. Kevin Smiths mates got together to make it (written/directed by Bryan Johnson of Tell 'em Steve-Dave). Odd flick. Johnson writes some twisted shit.

I like Wyatt from the few roles I've seen him in so far and he reminds me of his dad. He also had a starring role in 22 Jump Street.

Ah, Zook! That's where I knew him from. Never would have picked him as Russell's kid.
He actually reminds me of Aussie actor Jason Clarke (Lawless, Zero Dark Thirty). Looks like his young blonde brother (if he had one)

Just finished Life of Pi.
Beautiful film. Kicking myself for not watching this in a cinema, and for not watching it sooner. Gorgeous and captivating. So glad it was Ang Lee that made this, and not one of the earlier attached directors.

Pom Poko
Porco Rosso
Tales from Earthsea
The Wind Rises
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Captain America is for my bro. He wants to watch it before he goes to see Avengers next weekend.

Re: Blu-ray You Last Bought/Watched
Just got this in the mail today. This has long been one of my most wanted purchases, and it finally dipped down to under $100 (actually $87, the lowest ever price) recently on Amazon and so I snapped a copy up.
Below are some pictures. It came in immaculate condition. No slipcover (almost sent it back just out of respect for Joey, but decided against it) but that just means no slipcover damage either. There IS a little paper thing stickied on the back which could cause some problems later on but as of now it's cool.
This is my 7th Bluray folks! Whoooooooooooo! I'm inching on closer to double digits!

Re: Blu-ray You Last Bought/Watched
Yeah I've seen a couple of the films in the past. This collects everything (I believe) that they had done prior to this year. The newest one they put out was "I Hate Christian Laettner" which is not in this, as it's not from the 1st 5 years, but damn near everything else is.
I just watched THIS one on youtube the other day, one of the "Shorts" about the historic trade of Herschel Walker from the Dallas Cowboys to the Minnesota Vikings. Everyone thought the Vikings were straight robbing the Cowboys and it turned out that one trade singlehandedly initiated the renovation of a shitty Cowboys team and led to 3 Super Bowl wins and the drafting of legendary Cowboys players like Emmett Smith and others.
Check it out ya'll, if ya got about 12 Minutes.

I loved 30 For 30. Watched most of them originally as they aired. I seem to remember Ice Cube hosted the Raiders episode. They also did some great stuff on Escobar. I would love to get that set.

Amazon still has it for $87.99 (it's been around $120 or so for the past six months).

The film was only released on pan-and-scan VHS and LaserDisc in 1986, where the film quickly found a following and became a top-ten video rental for two years after the film's release.

The DVD is a bootleg. Some fan got a hold of it in some decent form, maybe a copy of the laser-disc, remastered it, and released it on DVD. Not perfect, but pretty fucking good considering VHS is the only alternative (I've seen worse "official" DVD's). You can also download the same file via Torrent etc.

Yeah it's a boot. I've bought it before and noticed the artwork was some custom print job from some dude's bedroom printer. Someone on a forum I believe said that it had been released on an HD cable channel, and that that was the source for the DVD.
Same thing with Richard Grieco's "If Looks Could Kill". Never released "officially" on DVD but in recent years put out by WB as a "Print on demand" release on DVDS with some insanely complicated copyright protected discs. It won't play on any device that can record. So it won't play on a computer DVDRW drive, only computer drive that will only PLAY the discs.
I remember putting it into DVD Decrypter and that shit just going crazy. lol. There used to be a blog post where some dude was analyzing the discs and how there was all this weird protection stuff he'd never seen before.
Jeremiah Season 2 is also a Print on Demand title that you can get via Amazon.

I watched Gleaming the Cube so many times that my VHS tape got so worn out it was actually unwatchable and that was probably after I'd watched the movie 10 times with those static bars tearing through the picture as the tape worn down, you know the ones.

I just pre-ordered Vanilla Sky (my 8th Bluray!), that comes out on Tuesday. So damn excited to finally have this beautiful movie on Bluray. And only like $8.29 too!
Comes with all these extras too, that were not on the original DVD:
Special Features
The many postponements of Vanilla Sky's release on Blu-ray resulted from the efforts of director Cameron Crowe and his production company to assemble a wealth of new extras to be added to the already substantial complement released with Paramount's 2002 DVD. The new extras are listed first and marked with an asterisk:
- *Alternate Ending: The alternate ending begins at approximately time mark 1:50, and director Crowe has recorded new commentary for this portion, but up until then the film is identical to the theatrical version.
Crowe and his team have reconstructed Vanilla Sky's original ending, which leads to the same conclusion but expands several roles, primarily Kurt Russell's McCabe and, to a lesser extent, Michael Shannon's prison guard and Noah Taylor's Ventura. Several key scenes play out differently, and a few are added. The result, according to Crowe, so confused preview audiences that the decision was made to streamline the ending and concentrate on the crucial exposition that, at least on the surface, ties together all of the events. A final, important difference occurs in the original ending's final line, which is identical to the theatrical version's except for the speaker. Listen carefully.
The alternate/original ending appears to have been reconstructed from a work print or other less-than-ideal source. There are obvious flaws in the compositing; detail is weak; and the color timing isn't final. Screenshots 30 through 35 (after the menu screen) are from this footage.- *Deleted Scenes (w/Optional Commentary by Cameron Crowe) (1080p; 1.78:1; 34:52): Many of these are alternate versions of scenes that exist in the theatrical version but a few (like "Two Daughters") are unique. Crowe's commentary discusses the details, except for the last three, of which the longest ("Attention to Detail") has been incorporated into the alternate ending.
- Be Real
- Two Daughters
- Career Advice
- Dog Porno
- Ebooks
- Great Sex
- He Gets It All
- Livin' the Dream
- The Pleasure of Sofia
- Memorial
- Attention to Detail (no commentary)
- "Fix Your Face" Jump (no commentary)
- L.E. Infomercial (no commentary)
*Mask Test (w/Optional Commentary by Cameron Crowe) (1080p; 1.85:1; 3:24): Settling on the exact form of the mask worn by David Aames was a painstaking process. This was one of the tests. *Kurt Russell Single Take (w/Optional Commentary by Cameron Crowe) (1080p; 1.85:1, centered; 6:10): As Crowe explains in the commentary, he has included this take to show "what a truly great working actor does in order to find a moment of startling reality for a movie". The scene is Dr. McCabe's most impassioned speech, for which Kurt Russell must (in Crowe's phrase) "dismantle [himself] as a human being" on a soundstage surrounded by green screen and a film crew. Crowe can be faintly heard off-camera giving direction. Commentary with Director Cameron Crowe and Composer Nancy Wilson: Crowe does almost all the talking, and Wilson supplies an occasional comment and musical accompaniment on guitar (which more commentaries should have). Crowe adds Tom Cruise by phone for about five minutes during the middle. Crowe has a lot to say on a variety of topics, including casting, production, the experience of filming specific scenes, editing choices, comparisons to Abre los ojos (including reactions from director/co-writer Alejandro Amenábar), influences (especially his idol, Billy Wilder), various clues and references in the frame, audience responses and the various interpretations of the film, including Crowe's several theories. Anyone intrigued (or baffled) by Vanilla Sky should find this commentary at least interesting and possibly enlightening. Prelude to a Dream (480i; 1.33:1; 6:15): This is Crowe's introduction to the film, accompanied by casting videos, on-set hijinks and on-location footage, including the Times Square shoot. Hitting It Hard (480i; 1.33:1; 10:06): This featurette covers the international press tour for the film's 2001-2002 release. An Interview with Paul McCartney (480i; 1.33:1; 1:36): Interviewed on Entertainment Tonight, McCartney describes how he came to compose the theme. Crowe tells a longer version on the commentary. Gag Reel (480i; 1.85:1; 5:30): This was an easter egg on the DVD. It's a good gag reel, because it's been edited with the right pacing, i.e., fast. Music Video: "Afrika/Shox" by Leftfield/Afrika Bambataa (480i; 1.33:1; 3:59): Set to a montage of clips from the film. Photo Gallery with Audio Introduction by Photographer Neal Preston (1080p; various)

Nice pick-ups FB. Went on a bit of a Criterion splurge myself the other day.
The 400 Blows
The Vanishing
Insomnia
The Fisher King
My Dinner With Andre
Love Streams
Picnic At Hanging Rock
Seven Samurai
also grabbed a couple non-Criterion titles...
Prince Avalanche
Revenge of the Ninja
Strike Back: Season 3
Watched a few Criterion titles too (which led to the splurge)
In The Mood For Love (Wong Kar-wai)
Sword of Doom (I fucking loved this film, though the finale leaves things somewhat unresolved. I'm a keen Samurai-film lover. How I had not seen this before is beyond me. One of the best.)
Life is Sweet
... and I just put Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou in the player.

Watched The Omen (1976) last night.
Good film, but for something that's in plenty of all-time "scary movie" lists, I can't say I agree. A well made film, intriguing and somewhat suspenseful, but definitely lacking in the scare factor. Much like Rosemary's Baby (1968) that I watched the night before. Good films, but just missing that extra something to put me on the edge of my seat.
Now watching my Criterion release of The Vanishing (1988).
