Sony Says PlayStation 5 Will Arrive For 2020 Holiday Season

Sony’s long-awaited PlayStation 5 gaming console will arrive at the start of the 2020 holiday season, the company announced Tuesday.

The news was confirmed in a blog post by Jim Ryan, president of Sony’s interactive entertainment unit. No pricing or exact release date were specified.

Among the game titles planned for the new console are Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima, Ryan said. Streaming video purveyors, movie studios and TV networks will also be keeping a close eye on the new PlayStation, given how much streaming video is consumed via the platform.

“One of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games,” Ryan wrote, “and we had the opportunity with our new controller to reimagine how the sense of touch can add to that immersion.”

The controller offers two key innovations, Sony says: haptic feedback, which replaces the “rumble” technology of past units; and adaptive triggers.

“With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field,” Ryan wrote. “You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.”

As to the adaptive triggers, he added, “Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain.”

PlayStation first launched in 1994 and its most recent version, the PlayStation 4, debuted in 2013.

I can't wait to see all the awesome CGI trailers for games which show zero gameplay but people will think the CGI is what the actual gameplay will look like. And I want to see more bullshit gameplay videos like Watch_Dogs and Days Gone which will look so great in demo but actually turn out to be crap upon release.

I would definitely go for the discless digital version. I prefer all digital. I don't buy many games and never feel like selling any physical games I have. That discless version would be right up my ass. I mean right up my alley.

Controversy about The Last of Us Part II’s narrative began to circulate before the sequel even hit store shelves. Such drama stemmed from a massive leak, wherein key story details were outed online. This led to review bombs on Metacritic within hours of its launch. In addition, so-called fans also took it upon themselves to send hateful messages and tweets to members of TLoU Part II’s cast and crew. Suffice it to say, the last few days have been a whirlwind. And it’s yet to slow down, evidenced by a petition that recently went live on Change.org. In short, there are thousands who want a “remake” of the newly released title’s storyline.

According to the petition, the core problem rests in the narrative’s framing. Joel dies at the hands of a small group, led by a woman named Abby who’s out for revenge. Throughout Part II, the reasons for her actions become clear–Her father was the doctor Joel killed at the end of TLoU to save Ellie. Abby and her cohorts are also seeking vengeance for humanity’s damnation, since Joel’s behavior guarantees a cure is essentially impossible.

The petition further takes umbrage with the fact that players are forced to play as Abby, Joel’s killer, for a considerable period of time. “…we were supposed to connect to [Abby] throughout half of the game, and the main character isn’t even [Ellie],” the petition reads. It continues, “…we need a remake for this game because this was a massive disrespect for every fan that waited 7 years for this sequel, and we need to get what we deserved and it was not this game.” (Entitlement overload?)

Quite a large number of players, who may or may not have actually played the game, seem to agree. As of writing, roughly 12,000 people have signed the petition for a remake. The goal is to achieve 15,000 signatures.

The Last of Us Part II is in stores now for the PlayStation 4.
