Amazon wants to send you pre-cooked meals thanks to military technology

Amazon is already web’s largest retailer, and having mastered the digital sale and delivery of everything from audio books to baby wipes, it was only a matter of time before the company tackled ready-to-eat meals, too. As reported by Reuters, the ecommerce giant is hard at work on a system that would allow it to provide fully pre-cooked meals to customers without the need for expensive and complicated refrigeration requirements.

The report is sourced from a startup that is pitching the technology, and alleges that Amazon is already working out the logistics of how it would market and distribute pre-cooked meals to customers using its existing warehouse structure. The plans could get off the ground as soon as 2018.

If the company does indeed plan on adopting this approach, Amazon’s ready-to-eat meals would be made possible by preservation technology originally pioneered by the military to provide food for troops. Called microwave-assisted thermal sterilization, the system uses microwaves to eliminate bacteria while also sealing the meal to prevent any contamination. Thanks to this combination of cleanliness and preservation, the meals can remain viable for up to 12 months before spoiling.

Such a product offering would put Amazon in a heated battle with other meal delivery services like Blue Apron and Plated. Those services provide mail-order meal packages that include all the ingredients needed to prepare a meal, but still require the customer to actually do the preparation and cooking. Cutting out those steps with completely pre-cooked meals which require just reheating would seemingly fit perfectly with Amazon’s convenience-above-all-else approach, but it remains to be seen whether customers would be comfortable with such non-refrigerated meal packages.

Meals from packages are for city slickers, I prepare all my own food. These would make good snacks on your train car rides home though. Cool

Yea. I figured you might not have been too keen on that. But it's good in a pinch if you don't have a way to cook something. When I went to Iceland in December, I brought a couple of Mountain House meals to eat when we were in Kirkjubæjarklaustur because it was a tiny town and everything closed so early. The supermarket closed at 6pm! WTF

You just add boiling water and let it sit for about 10 minutes. I had the Beef Stroganoff and the Beef Stew. Surprisingly, they tasted pretty damn good. Then again, we were hiking on a glacier all afternoon and were really hungry.

Didn't Damon do a big weight gain for The Informant?

Bale is 43 now and he's already done this so many times that I wouldn't be surprised when his heart fails him in the next decade and that's only if this is the last time, if he keeps doing that then I'd half that time.

The option to change your name disappeared for me shortly after I joined. I figured it was some sort of "grace period" for people who had second thoughts about their names. It's back for me, too.

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants released a new exam format for CPA's. The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy just released the scores for people who took the exam in the second quarter of 2017 and a lot of people have been anxious about how the new exams will be graded. I've been reading through the forums on Another71.com and it appears as though just as many people failed as passed with this new format. Glad I finished that shit years ago. Fuck tests.

From my town, 14% of the sun will be visible during the Eclipse so not a total Eclipse but I'm also not gonna travel for hours to look at the sun. I do have the glasses however.

Ummmm, I hadn't noticed that and I didn't create a third thread. It appears to have branched into a whole new thread cause we maxed out the old one on randomness since the OP in this thread is a comment from Abe to apparently no one, lol. Looks like it created itself on July 18th, so our system has been self aware for four weeks and we're just now finding out on the same day as the first Total Solar Eclipse in 99 years? This is not a coincidence! SKYNET IS RISING!
