The DC Animated Universe (Batman Hush - July 20, 2019) Batman10

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment have named the cast and some details about Batman Vs. Robin, the upcoming, animated feature film follow-up to Son of Batman, The Hollywood Reporter announced.

The story will incorporate elements of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's run, most notably the Court of Owls; Suburgatory's Jeremy Sisto will play Talon.

Other newcomers include Grey Griffin (formerly Delisle), who recently voiced Lego versions of both Wonder Woman and Lois Lane, will appear as a character named Samantha, while "Weird Al" Yankovic will play The Dollmaker, a Batman villain with various iterations, including versions that have appeared recently on both Arrow and Gotham.

Yankovic is currently appearing on ABC's Galavant, so heading to animation is likely part of a larger reinvention plan. The 55-year-old musician recently released the final album on a decades-long record contract and said during interviews at the time that it was unlikely he would make more traditional albums, since the kind of satricial music he performs is better with more immediacy, and records require a long production timetable.

Robin Atkin Downes of Superman vs. The Elite is a character named Grandmaster and Peter Onorati voices a man named Draco.

Veteran Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy will guest star as Thomas Wayne, Batman’s father, similar to the way that the final video in the previous "generation" of DC Universe animated features -- Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox -- cast the son of longtime Superman actor Tim Daly to play the Superman of the Flashpoint Universe.

Jay Oliva, the director of five previous DC Animation features, is helming the project from a script by Justice League 3000 co-writer J.M. DeMatteis.

Cool! Going to check out Throne of Atlantis soon.

They keep doing these animated movies, which I love, but what keeps them making more? Do they make a lot of money from them?

I can't imagine they make much of anything off the films, it's gotta be all in merchandising since these get released on disc every six months with absolutely no marketing. It seems to take me a long time to get around to these now, having seen the last 2-3 way after they're released.

Can't wait to see Throne of Atlantis. Will need to see a trailer for this one before I decide if I'll see it. Out of all the DCAU movies I've only liked Batman: Under the Red Hood, Superman: Doomsday, JL:FPP, JL: War and Green Lantern: First Flight.

I got Atlantis DL'd on the HD already but I always tend to get these releases a month earlier and still take six months to watch. Flashpoint was really the last DC animated that I really enjoyed, I wouldn't own any of the titles afterwards that I've seen.

Under the Red Hood, Year One, TDKReturns (Both), Wonder Woman, Flashpoint. Those are the ones I enjoyed and own, except for WW, still haven't picked that one up. The new titles they seem to be churning out too quickly now, always with a different voice cast, usually different animation style, no real connection. Which is what actually interests me in these new titles because of the fact that they are going to talk about the Owls, my favorite 52 Bats storyline and it looks as though the next two will be a series.

BATMAN VS ROBIN Filmmakers Spill DC Animated Universe Secrets

We’re all looking at Batman v Superman with a heady mix of anticipation and dread, as DC tries to bridge the gap between them and the Marvel cinematic universe in one fell swoop. Over in the direct-to-video department, however, things are much less nail-biting, with multiple DC Animated titles released each year and widespread fan satisfaction with the results. This week sees the release of the latest – and one of the better – entries in the series, Batman vs. Robin. Collider sat down to speak with the filmmakers responsible, during which time they revealed a few meaty tidbits about the line and how it’s put together that should be of interest to DC universe fans.

Sales Drives Characters

Okay, so this one isn’t entirely surprising, but the producers were quite candid about how it works. The reason the line has focused so heavily on Batman and the Justice League is simple. “Those titles sell,” producer James Tucker explained. “And so we cater to the audiences wishes.  That doesn’t mean we don’t want to do other titles. By their numbers, the Wonder Woman animated feature didn’t do well. And they know it should have. It was wellreceived and well-made. Creatively, we really hit it out of the park. And when fans hear people on our end call it a ‘failure,’ they think that means we think it was a bad movie.  It’s a terrific movie. But by the studio’s numbers from the way they have to do things, Wonder Woman didn’t perform the way they wanted. But they’ve also said – and I’ve seen from internal memos – that that’s something they want to fix.”

So how do they do that? Live-action movies play into that of course – and if Gal Gadot knocks ‘em dead in Batman v. Superman, we may see a lot more Wonder Woman in the future. But as Tucker explained, it also falls on them to make their lesser known characters available to a wider audience.

“Comic book fans will come out for Metamorpho, but my mother’s not one of them,” he laughed. “So we have to showcase those characters in a way that fans who didn’t know them can see them and start liking them. And it can be done. Iron Man was a second-tier Marvel character – at best – until Robert Downey. Now everybody knows who he is.  He’s one of their biggest names.  We’re very aware of that potential. So if we can do, say, a great Justice League movie and Metamorpho’s in it, suddenly people like my mother get very interested in Metamorpho and we have the leeway to make a stand-alone movie.”

There’s More than Grit Separating DC from Marvel

Much has been made of DC’s “no jokes” mantra and the overall seriousness with which they take their figures, as opposed to Marvel which takes a somewhat more playful approach. But Tucker was quick to point out another distinction between the two comic book behemoths.

While praising the competition to the stars, he also stressed that – because Marvel’s characters are newer – they’re also locked into certain personality traits. “Those times when Marvel has stumbled is usually when they’ve messed up the personality of the characters,” he explains. “You get Steve Rogers wrong and it all falls apart. One of the reasons they nailed The Avengers and Winter Soldier was because they nailed Steve Rogers as a character. It’s a bit of a tightrope act.

“DC has a longer history and they’ve catered to different age groups over that time.  And that gives us more room to play. Before Denny O’Neil took over Batman in the 70s, no one knew what the heck was going on in Bruce Wayne’s head. That gives us more flexibility to play with alternative ideas, and the fans tend to be more forgiving if we present an alternate take on the characters. That pays dividends with the animated movies because we can really explore different aspects of these characters.”

Four of DC Animated Features Form a Series… and It’s Leading to Something

At least four of the movies: — Justice League: War, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, Son of Batman and Batman vs. Robin – all share the same universe. (Jason O’Mara voices the Caped Crusader in all 4.) Granted, DC feels perfectly comfortable hopping into variant timelines (Assault on Arkham, released in the midst of all those efforts, is set in the separate timeline of the Arkham video games), but they seem committed to the notion of running the majority of them into a single shared universe. Director Jay Olvia confided as much during the Q&A.

“My boss came in and said, ‘we’re gonna shake up the line,’ and that’s where the New 52-inspired stuff came in. We’re not limited to it, but the first two movies – basically War and Atlantis are based on the new 52.” Oliva was cryptic on where it’s all going, or whether it’s building to some kind of an Avengers-esque show-stopper…though he certainly dropped a few hints on its development.

“We’ve got  two storylines going on in this continuity. We have the Justice League storylines, which are bigger and have that Avengers feeling and then we have smaller titled, which we want to be more personal and intimate. The Justice League series needs to be big and epic. You have too many characters in there to made that personal connection.
“We’re going to explore a lot of the elements on Grant Morrison’s run on Batman.  Not a direct adaptation, but with strong threads of those elements. The exact picture is going to depend on how well we do. There was a time when the videos weren’t selling terrifically well. But The Dark Knight Returns did really well. Flashpoint Paradox did really well. We went from one a year to three or four a year. The exact picture is going to fit into that schedule and we want something that’s going to make people excited.”

Big-Name Actors Have Shown an Interest

And by “big name,” we don’t just mean big stars. “When I worked on Batman v. Superman, I asked Henry Cavill about playing Superman in one of our movies,” Oliva confided. “I asked him about a potential Red Son and he got really excited.”

There’s a huge amount of caveats in that statement, which he himself is quick to point out. “We only have a window of about three weeks to work with our voice actors, and if you’re an actor in demand, that can be really tough. Ben Affleck would be great to do Batman and he’s in love with the character. But God it’s hard to get Ben.” Ben maybe. But Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher or Gal Gadot may be less out of reach. It certainly raises some intriguing possibilities.

Is ‘Gods and Monsters’ the Start of a Trend?

We certainly don’t want to bandy about idle rumors. The question here in involved ideal, pie-in-the-sky projects that Oliva would like to do. Yet with all the buzz recently over DC Animated’s upcoming Gods and Monsters video, and the general talk about DC’s multiverse gives rise to an intriguing possibility: an extended line of Elseworlds movies.
“I’d love to do Gotham by Gaslight,” Oliva mused about dream projects. “I always wanted to do Superman: Red Son, that would be a fun one. And it would be fantastic to do Kingdom Come, though we Kingdom Come he’d have to a have a much higher budget, and a much wider scope.”

There aren’t many DC fans who would disagree. Keep an eye on Gods and Monsters sales folks.  We might someday look back on it as the start of something.

The Hardest Character to Cast? Still Batman

Andrea Romano, the legendary voice director who has handled all of the DCU animated features, didn’t hesitate when asked about her biggest challenges character-wise. “Batman,” she smiled. “It’s still Batman. He’s so well-known and everyone has their own opinion of how he should sound. Kevin Conroy was our Batman for so many years, and we came to depend on him.

“I think the first time we had to replace him was the hardest, when the brass came down and said, ‘we want to go with someone new.’ I think it was for New Frontier, where we went with Jeremy [Sisto]. He was just what we needed but it was a tough process. Then they wanted another one for the next movie and another one, and so on. Every time it’s hard. Luckily, there are 180,000 members of the Screen Actors Guild, so we can find someone.”
Despite those challenges, she still has an escape route, at least where the Caped Crusader is concerned. “Even today, whenever they hand me a new movie project with Batman, my first question is, ‘Can we use Kevin?’

Jon Hamm: Superhero

At the very top of Romano’s wish list for actors she wants to use for these movies is one guy whose current gig is coming to an end.
“Jon Hamm,” she said instantly. “Mad Men is ending. I want him. I just love his range. He can do comedy, he can do drama. When I heard him on Archer, I was so sad that I was not the first animation voice director to get him, but it made me happy that he was doing voices for animation. I’ll find something that he’s available for and we’ll get him at some point.”

And who would the once and former Don Draper be right for in the DC universe? The first two that came to my mind were Lex Luthor and Two-Face, but Romano’s thoughts went much wider. “He could do a hero and he could do a villain equally as well. He could be the Joker, and he could make that Joker his own. He could do Green Arrow, he could be a Green Lantern. He might be a little too old to play the Flash, but he’s definitely got that sarcasm, that playfulness.”

Hey Jon, you got a fan!

DC’s efforts in this arena have definitely set a standard that Marvel’s animated projects would do well to follow. It’s nice to know that the people at the heart of it still have a few tricks up their sleeve. And no matter what happens in the live-action movie world, someone out there has got DC lovers’ backs. It’s enough to sleep a little sounder at night… and isn’t that what superheroes are for?

Yvonne Strahovski and Gaius Charles Have Bad Blood
The DC Animated Universe (Batman Hush - July 20, 2019) Batman12

The Batman family is growing. In the upcoming Warner Bros. Home Entertainment animated movie Batman: Bad Blood, two new members join the Dark Knight's team of superhero vigilantes patrolling Gotham City.

Chuck and Dexter alum Yvonne Strahovski (currently starring on ABC's The Astronaut Wives Club) will voice Batwoman (and her alter ego, Katherine Kane), while Gaius Charles (best known for Friday Night Lights and Grey's Anatomy and now appearing on NBC's Aquarius) plays Batwing and his alter ego, Luke Fox.

Plot details are not yet known, but Batman: Bad Blood—which is part of the DC Universe Original Movie franchise based on DC Comics characters—follows a storyline that began in 2014's Son of Batman and continued this year in Batman vs. Robin. The returning voice cast includes Jason O'Mara (Batman), Stuart Allan (Robin), Sean Maher (Nightwing) and Morena Baccarin (Talia al Ghul). In addition to Strahovski and Gaius, Bad Blood features Ernie Hudson as Lucius Fox, a longtime associate of Bruce Wayne, and Luke's father.

Batman: Bad Blood is set for release in early 2016 on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD. Two other movies will follow later in the year: Justice League vs. Titans (featuring the introduction of the Teen Titans to this animated universe) and Batman: The Killing Joke, based on the seminal graphic novel by writer Alan Moore and artist Brian Bolland.

Still haven't seen Son of Batman but didn't realize the DCAU had a sort of trilogy happening. So used to everything being stand alone.

You gotta check out Son of Batman before you watch Batman vs. Robin, it's the same story. I'm liking this continuity stuff a lot. Will what follows after Bad Blood be a continuity too? That's what I'm wondering about, I hope it is.

It's possible with Justice League vs. Titans since it will be the introduction of the Teen Titans to this animated universe so that sounds to me like a fourth film but Batman: The Killing Joke will be it's own amazing stand alone.

Fans rejoice! Mark Hamill will indeed provide the voice for The Joker in DC's animated take on Alan Moore's The Killing Joke, which is due out next year. The Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor had already expressed interest in reprising the iconic role for the movie, but sources have confirmed to Collider that it's definitely going to happen - in fact, word is he's already recorded his voice acting!

Mark Hamill has voiced the character on many different occasions, from Batman: The Animated Series, to the likes of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, Birds of Prey, and more recently the Arkham Asylum video games. Alan Moore's graphic novel is widely considered to be the definitive Joker story, so it's great to hear that Hamill will be back. Now, fingers crossed that Kevin Conroy will also return as Batman!

I'd go Gary Cole, he has a great cop voice and I seem to remember him as Gordon at some point.

Conroy isn't hard to get, it's WB that's been trying to ween the fans off him. I wonder if that's why Mark Hamill said he was retiring from the Joker. They use Conroy less and less and you can' that've Hamill's Joker without Conroy's Batman.

Truthfully, I'd be fine without Conroy, I've liked plenty of other Batman voice's over the years.

There have been decent Batman voices, but Conroy is the gold standard.

I found this Batman page earlier which covers every single Batman voice actor and a clip of their Batman dialogue.

Conroy Would Love To Do The Killing Joke With Hamill
The DC Animated Universe (Batman Hush - July 20, 2019) Conroy10

With rumors now swirling that Mark Hamill will voice The Joker again in the forthcoming, animated adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke, everyone has the same question: will Kevin Conroy return as Batman?

"There's an online petition to have us do it!" Conroy boasted when we spoke with him about his upcoming guest appearance on the second season of Netflix's Turbo Fast.

When asked about the realities of it -- whether he would want to go another round with his longtime foe? Conroy was enthusiastic.

"Oh, God! Are you kidding me? I'd do it in a heartbeat," Conroy told ComicBook.com. "I love working with him. I couldn't believe when they killed off The Joker. I would love to do it, and I hope that that happens."

While Conroy and Hamill haven't voiced the characters in recent adaptations of DC material, The Killing Joke was written in the 1980s and takes place in the "old" DC Universe, prior to Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. That places it firmly in Conroy's timeline.

Batman: The Killing Joke is expected along in 2016.

So, I finally read The Killing Joke. Now I know why it's one of the best Joker origin story of all time. It's funny though because I think I remember the part about the Red Hood in the factory falling into the chemicals form the Batman The Animated Series.

EDIT: Nevermind...it was from Under The Red Hood.

The film premiered this past weekend at New York Comic Con, ahead of its VOD, blu-ray and DVD release date in 2016. In the film, Batman goes missing and Dick Grayson steps into the cape-and-cowl to buy time to try and find the Caped Crusader. Assisting him are Robin (Damian Wayne), Batwoman (Kate Kane) and Batwing (Luke Fox).

The movie will hit digital HD on January 19, 2016, and come to Blu-ray Deluxe Edition, Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on February 2, 2016. The Deluxe Edition includes an exclusive Nightwing action figure and is a numbered limited edition.

The film sees Batman incapacitated in an as-yet-unrevealed way, and focuses on members of the Bat-family trying to step up to fill his void, including Nightwing, Batwoman, Robin (Damian Wayne), and newcomer Batwing. It's directed by Jay Oliva, produced by james Tucker, and written by comic book writer J.M. DeMatteis The official description follows:
"The mysterious disappearance of Batman, coupled with the emergence of powerful and malevolent new villains in Gotham City, force Nightwing (voice of Sean Maher) and Robin (Stuart Allan) to take crime-fighting into their own hands – while simultaneously searching for their missing leader. They’re not alone for long. New super heroes Batwoman (Yvonne Strahovski) and Batwing (Gaius Charles) – each armed with her/his own sensibilities, physical abilities and crime-fighting tools – arrive in Gotham to assist in the cause. As this new “family” strives to find its own dynamic, chilling clues lead the group to suspect the Dark Knight may have gone over to the dark side. It’s up to the entire Bat team to uncover the truth before Gotham City falls prey to its greatest threat yet."

The home releases on Blu-ray will also feature several extras, including a sneak peek at Justice League Vs. Teen Titans, the next animated feature, and two making-of featurettes. Two episodes featuring the Bat-family from previous animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Batman: The Animated Series will also be featured on the Blu-ray home releases.

Assault on Arkham was the last DCAU movie I saw and I didn't much care for it but I still plan on getting caught up since they finally added some serialization to this world.

I'm loving the serialization but this one looks ok to me. I hate Damien and I hate the fact that they're including him in everything now. He should have been killed by Deathstroke in that fight they had.

Has anybody seen those Batman Unlimited movies? I just read about them but had no idea of their existence. Are they more in the vein of these adult DC animated titles or are they a return to Batman for kids?

I remember watching the trailers and not liking the animation. The reviews don't look too good either.

That's what I assumed based on cover art and the fact that nobody has ever mentioned them but I figured I'd ask without bothering to google.
