Foxcatcher was so fucking depressing. The performances were incredible no doubt but the tone just brings you down. Steve's character is creepy as hell.

Very bleak and depressing film.
But also very good. A very slow paced film that was surprisingly engaging.

Strange Days didn't feel like a Bigelow or a Cameron film, it was really dark. What a great ensemble though an this was the first time I'd seen it.
Suicide Kings was one I watched a lot back in high school so I was happy to find it held up cause I hadn't watched it in a very long time.

I went in expecting a lot more gangster in the tale but still found Hardy the reason it was worth watching, he owned that movie.

Hardy was double good, but much like Black Mass it just didn't seem like much of a story which is annoying when you know these were real people and the stories were there to tell.

I understand that but I was able to enjoy Legend more than Black Mass because I was only moderately familiar with the Kray's story while I know so much about Whitey that I was angry during Black Mass by everything they left out. It does seem like intense closeups set to a score have replaced dialogue and story, just look at the smashing success of TWD which relies almost entirely on that style.

I did. Hardy was fantastic.
As Tyger and Wylde allude to above, not what I expected. It's more about the brothers relationship with each other as apposed to all the shit they did. Still great though. Hardy got to use his Bane voice again for Ronnie.
Loved this:

I'd say without Hardy I probably wouldn't have even given this a viewing. I can't imagine anybody else who could have pulled this off.

I may have eventually seen it simply because of who it was about, but you're right. Hardy made this much more watchable than it should have been. Dude's a talent.

This could have been better. The filmmaker was about as subtle as a brick. Essentially the female preteen version of Jason Bourne.
Deftness is nowhere to be found. Bana has done better, though he's not given much, and Blanchett delivers the defining cardboard cutout wicked witch.

Carol (2015)
Well made and beautiful to look at.
But not on par with Todd Haynes previous period drama.
The 2002 film Far From Heaven.

Did not live up to all the hype, I found myself watching a horror movie with a very very slow walking grandma monster and mostly reactionary shots to the intense musical score. What was terrifying about this movie? I didn't even find it creepy, I was just bored waiting for something to happen. I'm baffled by the hype...

Yeah, it wasn't that scary and certainly not the scariest I've seen. I think people liked it because it's original and not the same shit we've seen a hundred times.

When it was over I felt like I had just been watching a movie about sex offenders.

Watching The Drop again.
That scene when Bob deals with Eric Deeds, will never not be funny.

Absolutely.

The Drop is my favorite Hardy movie, it's such a quiet slow film and yet I've seen it more than any of his others. It's on constantly so I'm watch it again every few months. Did you see that Richie Whelan ending coming? I sure didn't.

Jane Got a Gun 8/10
After the long and troubled production I expected that movie to be a mess and instead found one of the best westerns of the last decade.

Really?
Nearly every western I've seen of the last ten years or specifically the last five years is a whole lot of silent riding, very little story and nearly always a crippled lead who spends the whole movie riding somewhere very slowly to kill someone while very little story ever happens in between. I thought Jane had a great story and characters that they kept developing, which is unusual for a western. There was always more information being given while also keeping me interested with the action we've come to expect from a western. It wasn't perfect but as a big fan of the genre and I enjoyed it way more than the majority of westerns we've gotten the last few years. Great cast too with Natalie Portman, Joel Egerton, Ewan McGregor and Boyd Holbrook. It won't be a movie for everyone but considering the production I really expected a disaster and instead found an enjoyable film with a cast I really like and story I was interested in and I definitely enjoyed it more than Fassbender's "Slow West" with Mendolsohn I also watched this week.
