Seth Grahame-Smith is in talks to direct the movie adaptation of “The Flash” for Warner Bros.

Charles Roven is producing the film, based on the studio’s DC Entertainment property about the crime-fighting superhero who can move at superhuman speeds. Zack Snyder and wife Deborah Snyder are executive producing.

The character, created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert, first appeared in Flash Comics #1 in 1940. The TV series “The Flash,” developed by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns, began airing on the CW last October.

“The Flash” would mark Grahame-Smith’s feature directorial debut. He would helm from his own script. Grahame-Smith is the author of “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” and “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” and the screenwriter of Warner Bros.’s upcoming “Lego Batman.”

“The Flash,” starring Ezra Miller, will hit theaters on March 3, 2018. The character will be introduced in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” in March and appear in “Justice League: Part One” in 2017.

The CW's TV incarnation of DC Comics' The Flash may be a ratings hit, but it's not the only version of the superhero in the works.

Warner Bros is currently putting together a movie version of The Flash as part of its DC Cinematic Universe, which began with Man Of Steel in 2013 and will continue with next year's Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

The Flash isn't out until 2018, which means it's rather too early for Warner to begin the drip-feed of early images and other details we've enjoyed with the likes of 2017's Wonder Woman. What we currently know is that Ezra Miller is in the lead as The Flash himself, and that screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith is making his debut as director on the movie. He'll also be writing the script, based on a story previously worked on by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

We've also recently learned, thanks to a source who has inside information on the movie, that the filmmakers behind The Flash have a quite specific look in mind as they design the superhero's outfit.

Understandably, they're seeking to avoid "any comparison to the well designed and received TV version," we're told. To ring the changes, they're aiming to create a more "tech-based" suit that will look quite different from the burgundy leather outfit designed by Colleen Atwood for the series. Instead, this one will look more "like armor."

When it comes to The Flash's movie costume, a comparison has been made to the version of the hero seen in the videogame Injustice: Gods Among Us. You can immediately see the differences between the clean, classic-looking TV show costume, and the spiky, more aggressive one presented in the videogame: 

The design choice seems to fit with the rest of the DCU we've seen so far; Superman's costume in Man Of Steel was all muted tones and tough, kevlar-like texture. In Batman v Superman, meanwhile, we'll be seeing the Caped Crusader wear both a classic cloth outfit and a heavily-armoured Batsuit -- all the better for taking on the Son of Jor-El. Even the Wonder Woman costume we've seen so far has a weighty, armor-like feel to it -- though this may not be the only outfit the warrior princess will wear through the course of the movie.

According to our source, Ezra Miller's Barry Allen is now something of a "tech geek," which also seems logical given his day-job -- that of a forensic scientist.

Of course, The Flash is still three years away, and things may change as Grahame-Smith guides the film to completion, but we're intrigued to see what the big-screen take will look like.

There’s the one we know well, played by Grant Gustin on The CW’s The Flash.

And there’s the one we know basically nothing about, to be played by Ezra Miller in Zach Synder’s upcoming Justice League movie (and very possibly making a cameo in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice).  

We spoke to Miller on the set of one his other upcoming films — the Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, where he plays the mysterious son of an anti-wizard crusader — and we asked how his version of The Flash will be different than previous versions we’ve seen. The actor didn’t reveal anything specific but gave us the impression of a more flawed character.

“Well, [first] it’s going to be a movie,” he said. “I’d like for it to be an exploration of a human being, a multi-dimensional human being, to speak.” Miller pauses. “Wow, I just made such a pun, without meaning to!” he says, referring to The Flash’s parallel universe storyline in the comics. Miller continues: “I’d like the character to have many dimensions. But really, I’d like him to have the usual dimensions we know and love, and then some extra ones that are part of the amazing consideration of this superhero. I hope to realize him as a person, and I think what’s most exciting for me in superhero mythologies is when we feel the humanity of someone who is heroic — or the heroism of someone who is a flawed, deeply human person.”

After Miller was cast as Allen, The CW’s Arrow star Stephen Amell gave the opinon that The Flash star Grant Gustin should have been cast in the big-screen version instead — while also noting that the DC universe is big enough for the both of them (and if it isn’t, well … there’s always more universes)

The names will be very familiar to fans of both the DC source materiel and CW's small screen take - but the site stresses that Iris West is the only character that actresses are currently testing for, so the others may be subject to change.

   IRIS WEST: Iris West is described in the breakdown as having Christiane Amanpour’s brains and Carrie Bradshaw’s style. An overcaffinated doe. A reporter at The Central City Citizen. Actresses are currently testing for this part.

   EOBARD THAWNE: Eobard Thawne is described in the breakdown as Central City’s Bill Gates. The smartest man in the room and he suffers from advanced degenerative disease like Stephen Hawking. Thawne is confined to a chair.

   FRED CHYRE: Fred Chyre is described in the breakdown as a gruff detective who first meets Barry at the scene of a crime. Now they’re colleagues and the closest thing Barry has to a friend. Chryre is investigating the unusual death of someone at Thawne Laboratories

   LEN SNART: Len Snart is described in the breakdown as being ex-military and turns out to be working for Thawne. Have a feeling he is the muscle the way Anatoli Knyazev (aka the KGBEAST) was the muscle for Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

   JAY GARRICK: Jay Garrick is described in the breakdown as being a former Central University professor who was fired for fringe science, and was working on the speed force program. Supposedly his role is just a cameo.


Fans will probably have expected some of these guys (such as Iris and Captain Cold), but the inclusion of the likes of Reverse-Flash (the breakdown for Thawne is pretty much word-for-word his small screen counterpart) and Jay Garrick would seem to be an odd move as it suggests the movie will draw heavily from one of the main arcs of the CW series.

The Flash movie has lost its director.

The project will retain Grahame-Smith’s script, which he wrote working off a treatment from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the Lego Movie duo that were once eyeing it as a possible directing vehicle.

Flash already has a release date – March 3, 2018 – and an actor who portrays the classic hero known as "the fastest man alive" – Ezra Miller, and there is plenty of time for the studio to find a director.

Miller’s Flash, aka. Barry Allen, was introduced in a cameo appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and is now shooting Justice League Part 1, which will be released in the summer of 2017.

Grahame-Smith still remains involved in other Warners project. He is a writer on the studio’s Lego Batman Movie and is working on Beetlejuice 2.

The Flash has a new director.

Just weeks after Warner Bros. parted ways with Seth Grahame-Smith, who was to make his directorial debut with the project, the studio has set another newbie for the gig: Rick Famuyiwa, who made a splash with his Sundance sensation, Dope.

The project will retain Grahame-Smith’s script, which he wrote working off of a treatment by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the Lego Movie duo who once were eyeing it as a possible directing vehicle.



The Flash already has a release date — March 16, 2018 — and a star, Ezra Miller, who's portraying the classic hero known as "the fastest man alive."  The actor made his debut in Batman v Superman.

After directing 2002’s Brown Sugar and 2010 romantic comedy Our Family Wedding, Famuyiwa caught the industry’s eye with Dope, the 2015 film that was a breakout at Sundance and won the prize for best editing. He recently helmed HBO’s original film Confirmation, starring Kerry Washington as Anita Hill.

While “The Flash” waits to find its new director, Warner Bros. has tapped Joby Harold to do a page-one rewrite to the script, sources tell Variety.

The pic has been on hold since losing director Rick Famuyiwa and while it waits to find his replacement, the studio has decided to take script in different direction.

WB had no comment.

Executives have been taking their time in finding his replacement. With Ezra Miller, who will play the speedy superhero, getting ready to shoot “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2,” they decided work on a new script in the meantime.

Famuyiwa had written the latest draft. Sources say the original reason for his departure had to do with executives disagreeing with where he had taken the script. Seth Grahame-Smith had also written a previous draft.

Kiersey Clemons is attached to play Iris West, and Billy Crudup will play Miller’s father.

Harold has past ties to the studio, having most recently written “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.” Other projects in development include a new “Robin Hood: Origins” movie for Lionsgate, as well as a “Twilight Zone” film for the studio.

Wait…Flashpoint?

The announcement that Warner Bros' solo Flash movie will, apparently, be called Flashpoint  (or perhaps Flash: Flashpoint, it's unclear) during the studio's San Diego Comic-Con presentation Saturday morning was a surprise on multiple fronts. For one thing, just the fact that the movie isn't called The Flash might seem unusual, until you remember that it's in the WB's best interests to find some way of differentiating the movie from the TV show of the same name (despite the fact that both feature versions of the same character).

However, Flashpoint isn't a title with no resonance for the Flash as a character; it's the name of a five-issue 2011 comic book series that was later adapted (in concept only) as the plot engine for the first half of the third season of the CW series — the idea that DC's Fastest Man Alive would use his powers to go back in time to save the life of his mother, only to wreck the timeline as a result.

In the TV version of the plot, things were (mostly) returned to normal within an hour, albeit with specific aftershocks that drove future episodes. In the comic book story, however — written by Geoff Johns, who not coincidentally is now in charge of DC's movie output — things are far more complicated: The "Flashpoint" universe rewrites the larger DC Universe in a way that creates alternate versions of Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Superman and Green Lantern…all of whom exist within the DC movieverse, and are primed for an alternate take that could put a spotlight on the (unchanged) Flash in a way that few other storylines could follow.

Regardless of the casting u kinda have to establish Barry Allen's life and why he thinks it sucks before u move on the a movie where he decides he needs to change something.  U also need to establish the Flash can go back in time.  As JL already seems a bit busy to be fleshing out the Flash ur talking about doing both those things in the first act of Flashpoint.  Makes no sense to me.
