The film is set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city. Billy, a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while Bones, her eighteen-year-old son, discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery if their family is to survive.
Lost River, the directorial debut of Ryan Gosling stars Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Eva Mendes, Iain De Caestecker, Matt Smith, and Barbara Steele.

Wasn't this film panned at Cannes last summer?

Lost River received negative reviews from its debut at Cannes, and holds a 25% positive rating on the film-review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, based on 16 reviews. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 35 out of 100, based on 10 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian stated that the film is "colossally indulgent, shapeless, often fantastically and unthinkingly offensive and at all times insufferably conceited". Kate Muir of The Sunday Times indicated that "Ryan Gosling's Lost River is a lurid mash up of Lynch, Refn and Edward Hopper. In a bad way." Robbie Collin of The Telegraph called the film "dumbfoundingly poor" and stated that Gosling "confuses 'making film' with 'assembling Tumblr of David Lynch & Mario Bava gifs'".

"colossally indulgent" and "insufferably conceited" definitely remind me of how I felt after watching Beyond the Pines and Only God Forgives. Apparently this has rubbed off on Gosling. I wish the guy just went back to making regular movies or at least as close to regular as a weird dude like he could. If those two movies weren't bad enough his next project is from the king of the pretentious film, Terrence Malick. I give up on Gosling.

4 years now since he made a good movie.

The last movie I saw him in was Gangster Squad and before that was Beyond the Pines. He's still talented though but I don't know why keeps being attached to bad movies. Maybe he's taking a break.

I'm not saying he isn't talented, I still think he's got massive potential, but he's currently in a rut of making pretentious bullshit that I think way too much time on the indie circuit is responsible for.

Agreed. Maybe if he signed up for a superhero movie he'd start getting more buzz. I remember his name being thrown around for Aquaman but too late for that now.

I just looked into what else Gosling's got going on and he's got a film coming out next year called "The Nice Guys" with Matt Bomer, Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, scripted and directed by the awesome Shane Black the man responsible for Lethal Weapon, Long Kiss Good Night and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
“The Nice Guys” takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, when down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Gosling) and hired leg-breaker Jackson Healy (Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power.

Interesting! Hopefully he signs on more movies like this from now on. Enough independent stuff for now.
