Given how many films and TV show plots the man inspired, it’s kind of surprising that James Joseph “Whitey” Bulger never has been the subject of a narrative film. That changes with Black Mass, based on the true-crime book and starring an almost unrecognizable Johnny Depp as the Boston gangster-turned-informant-turned-fugitive. The first brutal and slightly terrifying official trailer has been released from captivity, and we have the UK version here.

Set during the 1970s, Black Mass tells the almost too-weird-to-be-true story of how Bulger maintained a criminal empire for decades with the tacit, and sometimes explicit, help of the FBI. Recruited as an informant against the rival Patriarca crime family, Bulger thoroughly corrupted his FBI handler and then his handler’s boss. As the FBI dismantled the Patriarca family, Bulger was able to fill the vacuum, going on to establish himself as the head of organized crime in Boston. His FBI cronies concealed his crimes — including several murders — and prevented him from being indicted on several occasions. When the government finally did issue an indictment in 1994, his FBI handler tipped him off, and Bulger went into hiding. He would remain on the lam for 16 years, finally being nabbed in Santa Monica in 2011.

Bulger, by the way, inspired Jack Nicholson’s Frank Costello in The Departed, as well as episodes of Law & Order, Rizzoli & Isles and the basic premise of the Showtime series Brotherhood starring Jason Clarke and Jason Isaacs.

Black Mass also stars Kevin Bacon, Benedict Cumerbatch, Joel Edgerton, Jesse Plemons and Sienna Miller. Directed by Crazy Heart‘s Scott Cooper from a script by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth, it hits theaters September 18.

Whoa! Shit got real quick! Never heard of this "Whitey" guy though. But this is a little outside of what Depp normally does and he looks quite convincing too.

Just re-watched the trailer and spotted Rory Cochrane in it. Fan of that dude. Haven't seen him in anything for a while. His Wiki page doesn't even list him in it, but the Black Mass page does.

Whitey was a stone cold killer. I saw a pretty incredible documentary about him recently called "Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger". I recommend it.

Rusty, Cochrane is playing Steve Flemmi, a stone cold Psychopath that Whitey kept on the payroll. Flemmi was a fucking monster, vile and disgusting on every level, a perfect hitter for the mob but an absolute nightmare for everyone else. I've never seen Cochrane do anything like this before, he's going to go DARK.

Oh Johnny, I've been waiting so long for YOU to return to A list from.

It gets no better, than the INFAMOUS Whitey Bulger.

Plus this is the same director that brought us Out of the Furnace.

Except that he followed this up with another POTC movie and since he's still a falling down drunk he recently did exactly that and injured his hand band enough to delay filming it.

‘Black Mass’ Hailed As Major Return For Johnny Depp; Sienna Miller Role Cut From Film

Playing out of competition, today’s Venice Film Festival gala entry, Black Mass, screened for press at an early call this morning with strong applause at the end — twice. Audiences should be cautioned to stick around as there’s a key footnote at the end of the Scott Cooper-helmed crime drama. Johnny Depp has been getting some career best notices for his chameleon-like turn as James “Whitey” Bulger, the notorious leader of Boston’s Winter Hill Gang who is now serving two life sentences for murder and other crimes. Bulger was a ruthless mob kingpin in 1970s Boston who spent a decade on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list. He went on the lam in 1994 and was finally captured in 2011 in Santa Monica. He turned 86 yesterday.

Also stirring up great praise is Joel Edgerton who plays FBI agent John Connolly, a childhood pal of Bulger’s and his brother Billy (Benedict Cumberbatch, also very strong) who grew up to be a powerful senator. The story kicks off when Connolly returns to South Boston with the goal of getting rid of the Italian mafia in the North part of the city. He strikes an “alliance” with Bulger which sees the criminal provide information to the Feds in tacit exchange for basically being untouchable. The Guardian wrote this morning that Black Mass is “acted and directed with tremendous confidence and verve” and called it a “major comeback” for Depp whose recent pics Transcendence and Mortdecai fizzled.

However, Sienna Miller, who was due to play Bulger’s girlfriend in the later part of his life, has been excised from the film. Cooper told the Boston Globe she had been “fantastic.” But a decision was made to focus on the mobster’s earlier life. “It came down to narrative choices,” he said.

The title of the film comes from the 2001 bestseller Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob which was written by Dick Lehr and Gerry O’Neill (they have a cameo in one scene in the film, but are not playing themselves).

There are some shadings of The Godfather and Goodfellas including one chilling scene reminiscent of the “Funny how?” moment from the latter. And The Departed gets a nod here too — both pics are set in Boston (in fact, Venice is starting to feel like Beantown on the Adriatic after yesterday’s Spotlight and Black Mass today).

This is a film that went through a series of growing pains. It was originally set up with Universal distributing through producer Cross Creek’s deal with the studio. At the time, Barry Levinson was attached to direct Depp who later exited over a salary dispute in May 2013. Fast forward to January 2014 and Crazy Heart‘s Cooper was set to direct with Depp back in the mix. Then, in late February 2014, Warner Bros came aboard to co-finance and take worldwide distribution as previous backer Exclusive Media imploded in Berlin that same month.

Warner is starting international rollout on Black Mass on September 17 after hitting both Telluride and Toronto.

I watched it last night, great performance from Depp absolutely. He was very scary and intimidating. He would say something in the movie and his actions say otherwise. A nice change for him, I don't remember the last time he did a serious role like this. The movie it self was ok, I don't know anything about Jimmy Bulger and I learned something about him with this movie.

The Departed did a great job of showing the kind of shit Whitey did. Nicholson's character was based on him.

Depp wore contacts and was silent most of the movie and the critics raved. He doesn't have the ability to captivate me with a performance the same way actors like Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender or Sam Rockwell do, Edgerton is also great in the quiet. They have the ability to carry a film especially in the quiet moments but Depp relies so heavily on zany character and performance that when he's playing an actual person again, he just feels wrong in the role. The rest of the cast was good with what they had to work with though.

FYI, The movie was chopped up in the editing room, Sienna Miller shot quite a bit of footage.

Sam Rockwell is criminally underrated.

Always liked him, Moon made me love him.

Fassbender needs to rethink his career choices.

JMO.

Tom Hardy and Joel are having the success, that he could've.

I watched this recently and felt the same way.

My biggest issue was by the end of it, it wasn't really about Bulger. Most of it was about the Feds. Bulger was just a cog in the wheel.

After The Green Mile I checked out nearly all of Rockwell's work and he always delivers a solid performance.

I thought Fassy's work in MacBeth was fantastic and I feel like the AC movie is gonna be a surprise.

Tom and Joel may reunite for a Warrior sequel with Gavin O'Conner since the first was abandoned upon release but gained so much popularity in the years since.
