A Most Violent Year ($5,713,179)
Set during the winter of 1981 — statistically one of the most crime-ridden of New York City’s history — A Most Violent Year is a drama following the lives of an immigrant and his family as they attempt to capitalize on the American Dream, while the rampant violence, decay, and corruption of the day drag them in and threaten to destroy all they have built.
J.C. Chandor’s third feature examines one immigrant’s determined climb up a morally crooked ladder, where simmering rivalries and unprovoked attacks threaten his business, family, and – above all – his own unwavering belief in the righteousness of his path. With A Most Violent Year, Chandor journeys in a bold new direction, toward the place where best intentions yield to raw instinct, and where we are most vulnerable to compromise what we know to be right.

Tons of heat on the award circuits though.

When the original actor cast in the male lead dropped out, Jessica suggested Oscar to replace him.
They were at Julliard togther, remained friends afterwards
and always wanted to work togther.

Smith and Mosier were praising this in their recent podcast. He was saying there's no way you'd think the premise of the movie would work, but it does, and doesn't go where you'd expect it too.
Definitely on my radar.

I'm hoping this is more of Jessica's movie because she is capable of a lot more than Oscar has showed me so far. Plus we haven't had a great crime movie in a few years.

Saw this last night on blu, an overall solid film.
But the actions of one character, still have me somewhat
baffled. Plan to give it a second look in the near future.

Chastain was the only thing about the movie I actually enjoyed. It was so heavily marketed as a gangster film that when I realized the only real gangster was Chastain and they weren't even gonna let her play one. She was the only reason I even finished the film, I was utterly bored the whole time just waiting for the crime to actually happen. Had no idea this was such a big financial failure though, only grossed 1/4 of its production budget back.

The title of this film was misleading as was the advertisment.
Critically acclaimed, but bombed at the box office.
Like I said above, found it to be an overall solid film, but Elyes Gabel's character had me facepalming at the end.
