‘Purge 3’ Gears Up With Big Additions

Betty Gabriel, Edwin Hodge, Kyle Secor, JJ Soria, Mykelti Williamson and Elizabeth Mitchell have joined the cast of Universal/Blumhouse’s The Purge 3, the latest installment in the mircro-budget horror series that has been minting money for all parties. The third pic will reveal the next chapter of the 12 hours of government-sanctioned anarchy in which murder is legal and nobody can help you if you’re stuck outside. Writer-director James DeMonaco is back for a third go-round, and Frank Grillo is already set to return to star.

Universal has set a July 1, 2016 release date, and the movie near a shooting start in Rhode Island.

The first two Purge films had a combined budget of $12 million, and together have grossed $200 million worldwide, sealing a deal for a third pic back in October after the second one, The Purge: Anarchy, surpassed the original film’s $91 million worldwide gross on its way to $110 million. Sébastien K. Lemercier, Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum and Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing again. This is part of Blumhouse’s big first-look deal at Uni.
No character descriptions were gleaned.

Gabriel (Experimenter) is next up opposite Grillo and Bojana Novakovic in the feature Beyond Skyline and is repped by Greene & Associates and Generate, Hodge (Chicago Fire) is repped by Pakula/King & Associates and The Priluck Company, Soria (American Crime) is repped by Pakula/King and David Dean Management, Secor (Resurrection) is repped by Gersh and Brillstein Entertainment, Mitchell (Lost) is repped by Paradigm and LINK Entertainment, and Williamson (Justified) is repped by Paradigm.

I've always loved Elizabeth Mitchell and I swear that woman just gets better with age...

Happy to see Edwin's return but I was hoping for Michael K Williams too but it would look like he will not be returning based on all these casting updates and no mention. Was also holding out hope for Kiele's return but it looks like Frank and Edwin will be the only returning characters for this franchise.

You really need to check out Once Upon A Time because she's another one to add to the list.

I'm been trying to get through the last season of OUAT but even with all those gorgeous ladies that show is just a bit too much whimsy for me to handle. I cannot binge it, I find it quite difficult to watch back to back episodes, two seems to be my limit then I need another few days before I can watch another. My limit for the whimsy is geared more towards Doctor Who than OUAT which is a shame because so so many beautiful ladies... Cool

That aside, the cast for this is shaping up quite nicely and looking forward to the sub-title reveal.

I'd expect that if MKW doesn't return, it's due to unavailability, I believe he's working on two different tv shows and a movie or two right now.

Expanding the universe introduced in the hit franchise that electrified the culture and earned $200 million at the worldwide box office, Universal Pictures’ The Purge: Election Year reveals the next terrifying chapter that occurs over 12 hours of annual lawlessness sanctioned by the New Founders of America to keep this country great.

It’s been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night.  Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent.  But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn…or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.

Once again returning to collaborate with franchise creator James DeMonaco on The Purge: Election Year are the series’ producers: Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Insidious and Ouija series, The Visit), Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ouija series, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and writer/director DeMonaco’s longtime production partner, Sébastien K. Lemercier (Assault on Precinct 13, Four Lovers).

Chelsea has a talk show on Netflix.

She had a dinner/round table discussion with some of the CW cast.

Chris Evans

Emily Van Camp

Sebastian Stan

and Grillo.

Which I found odd, since Crossbones got blown TF out the film 10
mins in.
Anyway....

He tried to dominate most of the convo, talking over everyone.

The subject turned to women not getting equal pay.

Emily spoke on that for a bit.

Then Chelsea added how it's hard for Black actors in the biz.

Here comes Grillo, what about Italians?

Chelsea tried to keep it on topic.

Then he says....

Can we put Italians, with the Black people?

Adding air quotes, while saying black people.

Chris asked why he did that?

I didn't see anything past that.

As expected, it didn't go over well and folks dragged him on Twitter.

First he clapped back with an attitude.

Block everyone who pointed out the problem with the comments.

Then went thru all the steps in the Racist's Apology handbook.

His buddy Joe Carnahan jumped in talking shit, got smacked down
As well.

As of now, Grillo deleted his Twitter and made his IG private.

Nobody in MCU or the CW cast has spoke out to defend him.

When he started talking shit.

Some reminded him that Grillo will never be The Punisher.

Since his plans for a movie went nowhere.

Re: The Purge: Election Year ($99,037,178) (Purge TV Series Coming)

Post by WyldeMan on 7/2/2016, 11:21 am

‘The Purge 3’ Tops ‘Tarzan,’ Spielberg Bombs With ‘The BFG’
Independence Day weekend kicked off with a whimper, at least where the movies were concerned.

For the third consecutive weekend, Disney and Pixar’s “Finding Dory” is expected to swim to the top of the box office charts. It added $13.4 million to its $343.8 million haul on Friday, and is projected to  bring in $43 million over the three days and $52 million over the four day holiday.

Not that “Dory” had much in the way of competition. This July 4th was supposed to host a blockbuster battle between David Yates’ “The Legend of Tarzan” and Steven Spielberg’s “The BFG,” but both films are shaping up to be pop culture pipsqueaks.

“The Legend of Tarzan,” Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow’s costly update on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ moldy jungle yarns, is doing better than expected, pulling in $14 million on Friday. It is on pace to rack up more than $34 million over its first three days and may cross $40 million over the four day stretch. Heading into the weekend, the film, which sees Alexander Skarsgård don Tarzan’s loincloth in order to battle some nasty colonialists, was expected to rack up $35 million over the holiday. Don’t move: “The Legend of Tarzan” into the win column just yet. Its $180 million price tag still means that Warner Bros. is looking at a write-down unless foreign audiences turn out in force. The film suffered from bad reviews, but audiences enjoyed it more than critics, handing it an A minus CinemaScore rating.

Then there’s “The BFG,” which earned $7 million on Friday and is projected to bring in a disastrous $21 million over the three day weekend and a paltry $25 million over the four day holiday. Disney, Walden Media, and Amblin Entertainment backed the $140 million project, betting that pairing Spielberg with Roald Dahl’s children’s fable about a friendly giant who befriends a lonely girl would reap dividends.

But Spielberg isn’t the draw he once was, particularly with younger audiences. Although he made a name for himself with crowd pleasers such as “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “Jaws,” he’s spent the better part of the last decade churning out historical dramas like “Lincoln” and “Bridge of Spies” that appeal to older crowds. Critics liked “The BFG,” but the strong reviews won’t save the film from being one of the biggest flops of Spielberg’s career and of the summer.

The failure of “The Legend of Tarzan” and “The BFG” provided a clear runway for Universal’s “The Purge: Election Year.” The third film in the horror franchise follows a presidential candidate (Elizabeth Mitchell) who is campaigning to end Purge night, an annual evening of legally-sanctioned lawlessness.

James DeMonaco, who directed the other two Purge films, returns, along with Frank Grillo, who starred in the previous installment, “The Purge: Anarchy.” The film is another micro-budget success for Blumhouse, costing a mere $10 million to produce. After leading the Friday box office with $14.5 million, it could end the weekend with a healthy $33 million in receipts and $37 million over the four day holiday. That’s something to celebrate.

DAMN, The Purge 3 was made for only $10 million? I figured they'd have gotten a much bigger budget by the third film but they kept it tight and are looking at a $40 million opening weekend domestically. That pretty much solidifies more Purge films for years to come.

Such a smart business move, and quite a surprise in this day and age. When they start bumping the budget up into the $20-$40m area, that's when they'll fuck it up and lose money.

The first cost $3m, bought in over $80m worldwide, the second cost around $10m, and bought in over $100m. They've got a good business model and a fanbase. They shouldn't fuck with that.

Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions have mastered the market on cheaply made horror turned into big successful franchises.  Blumhouse is behind all the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge and Sinister franchises. Over the last six years it's been pretty much non-stop low-budget hits for them. I wish more studios would take this approach. The movies I love the most tend to be the ones that gross the least but clearly they've figured out how to make this style of film work for very little money.

Tarzan was something that I liked as a kid but at no point have I found myself wishing that somebody would bring Tarzan back for the 30th time. The CGI apes looked terrible compared to Weta's Ape works for the POTA franchise. Yet WB felt the need to spend $180 million on the production of Tarzan plus the expensive marketing campaign too.

At least Margot's career will survive this failure and really that's all I care about. Twisted Evil

Taylor was good in The Normal Heart.

Did what he could, with the scraps they gave him for True Detective.

He's actively making better choices, also humbled himself.

But Askars, he was the TB breakout star and failed to capitalize on the momentum.

His buddy Joel Kinnaman is doing better than him.

You can be on the biggest tv show on the planet and your film career will still go nowhere. Look at all the talent among the casts of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, you'd think there would be some much bigger success stories.

Danai Gurira is making a name for herself on Bway.
Writing is her true passion.

Her second play will debut there soon.

Corey Hawkins's career has gained momentum, after the NWA biopic.

He listed for only six episodes the upcoming season.

My guess, Heath isn't long for TWD tv universe.

Danai, Norman and Lauren are all over the place but it's mainly in small indie films. I haven't seen Andy Lincoln in anything else since TWD began though.

Id say Corey's momentum is based entirely off of Compton cause he's a nothing character in TWD. He's banked that new found popularity into the new Kong film and 24 but I bet it would have happened regardless.

“The Purge” is Getting a TV Series!
In the last three years, The Purge movies have proven to be a big, growing success on the silver screen. Each film --written and directed by James DeMonaco -- has managed to do better at the box office than its predecessor, and as a result the future of the series is quite bright. In fact, not only will we still see more movies in the future, but now a Purge television series is in active development.

With The Purge: Election Year arriving on Blu-ray and DVD next week, I had the pleasure of hopping on the phone with James DeMonaco for a one-on-one interview this morning, and it was during our conversation that he revealed the exciting news of the in-the-works Purge show. While discussing the franchise's high-concept idea and its surprising flexibility from a narrative perspective, I asked the writer/director if there was a chance of potentially seeing a television series in the future, and he enthusiastically responded in the affirmative. Said DeMonaco,

Dude, it's so weird you bring that up. Yes! Not an anthology... I guess kind of an anthology -- more of an interwoven anthology. They came to me about a TV show, my idea is that you do six or seven storylines. And I would kind of intercut them, use flashbacks.

James DeMonaco went on to note that his ideal format for the show is more oriented for cable, describing it as playing out over the course of 10 hours (presumably meaning 10 episodes). Explaining why he felt that television was a good fit, the Purge mastermind said that having that much runtime versus 90 minutes would allow him to really dig inside the mind of a "purger" and let audiences really see what is driving them to kill on Purge Night. Said DeMonaco,

The idea of why I like the idea of a maybe 10 hour TV thing on this, the one thing you really can't do on the films is, just because of mere real estate and time, is you can't get into the nuance and complexity that would drive someone to commit a terrible act on this night. Whether it's revenge or out of passion, but what might be interesting in a TV show is with a flashback narrative, if you start on Purge Night but you go back to show how people have gotten to where they are. Where you see a couple that's gone haywire on this night, but let's show everything that's led up to this moment of a husband trying to kill a wife -- the cheating or the accusations of cheating or money problems. It will be interesting to show those arcs, those dramatic and complex arcs that get people to where they pick up a gun or a knife and kill someone else. I think there's something cool that we can do with the real estate of TV -- 10 hours, potentially.

Perhaps even more exciting than all of these details about the Purge television series is the fact that it may not be a long time before we actually find ourselves watching it. Given the clear amount of thought that has gone into the project, I asked James DeMonaco about the status of the show and if we could see even see it in the next year, and he told me that things are indeed moving quickly in development:

I think so, dude, yeah! They're far ahead on the TV front... pretty far ahead. Not to get into the nuance of how it all goes down, we're talking about deals right now, money is being spoken about. Things like that. So I think it's being taken very seriously from the higher-ups who obviously dictate everything.

This is obviously extremely exciting news for fans of The Purge movies, and you can be sure that we will keep you up to date about more project details in the future. For now, stay tuned for a lot more great stuff from my interview with James DeMonaco, and pick up your copy of The Purge: Election Year on Blu-ray and DVD on October 4th.

I like the concept based on what DeMonaco is pitching in that article. I always wanted more character development and that's something we didn't get much of.

Watched the movie, not as good as the second one. Great that they finally abolished Purge Night. There really doesn't need to be a show for this after the way it ended.
