No way! He was in good shape in his Gladiator days. But in Joker, his ribs sticking out was a little much. I think he dropped a few more pounds than usual for this character.

Lady Gaga Debuts Harley Quinn Look in ‘Joker’ Sequel Set Photos

Lady Gaga is not kidding around when it comes to bringing her Joker: Folie à Deux character to life.

The star was photographed Saturday during the New York City shoot for filmmaker Todd Phillips’ sequel to his Oscar-winning 2019 hit, Joker. Gaga is believed to be playing DC’s Harley Quinn, and the images, which offer the first look at the actress in costume and full makeup for her role, appear to back this up.

In the pics, Gaga gets an escort from Gotham police officers in a large crowd scene. Apparent protesters fill the surrounding area, some of whom hold signs with such messages as “Free Joker” and “Joker Marry Me.”

Phillips first offered a look at Gaga in character when he posted a close-up image to Instagram on Feb. 14 of the performer holding co-star Joaquin Phoenix’s face. “Happy Valentine’s Day,” the director captioned the post at the time.

The filmmaker had previously announced in December that shooting had commenced by sharing a photo of Phoenix in character. The actor, who earned a best actor Oscar for the 2019 film, reprises his role of Arthur Fleck in the follow-up that has a script from Phillips and Scott Silver.

Warner Bros.’ Joker focused on Fleck, an aspiring comedian battling mental health issues, and went on to gross $1 billion. The follow-up’s title, Folie à Deux, refers to a medical term for a mental disorder that affects two or more people, often belonging to the same family.

The forthcoming film will be one of the DC Elseworlds titles, along with Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel, set to exist outside of the shared-universe slate that is currently in the works from recently instated DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Warner Bros. is set to release Joker: Folie à Deux on Oct. 4, 2024.

Warner Bros on Tuesday released the first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the 2019 smash that returns Joaquin Phoenix to his Oscar-winning role and co-stars Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. The film hits theaters on October 4, 2024.

The studio revealed the trailer during its studio presentation to exhibitors at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

The trailer is about mad people — in love. Phoenix is seen taking the stage and performing in a nightclub. The footage is set against the ditty, “What the World Needs Now (Is Love Sweet Love).” Gaga and Phoenix run through the Manhattan streets and dream of dancing clad in elegance against a moonlit sky. The trailer ends with Harley visiting Joker in jail — or Arkham Asylum.

Todd Phillips returns to direct and co-write the script for the sequel, which is billed as a drama with musical elements set in and around Arkham. The cast also includes Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey, with Zazie Beetz returning from the first film.

Philipps took the stage this evening and told exhibitors, “It’s been five years since I was here last. Did I miss anything? Just a global pandemic, dual strikes, an economic downturn. … I’m sure it didn’t affect any of you.”

He said he had wanted to come earlier to thank exhibitors for their support of Joker, but the pandemic hit right in the aftermath. Deadline hears that Phillips was literally scheduled to come and open CinemaCon 2020 before Covid hit and that edition was canceled.

Today he said: “About a month before the film came out in 2019, the narrative turned and there started to be bizarre warnings; it was amazing that exhibitors didn’t flinch. That attitude was a huge reason for our success. It’s a little late now but I wanted to thank you.”

“When we were making the first movie Joaquin and I always talked about making a sequel really because we were having a great time but we were never really serious,” he added.

“Then when Joker became a huge success we talked about it during the pandemic and decided to do it and we had a blast doing it.”

He continued about the sequel: “We cast Gaga because she’s magic. I was a producer on A Star is Born and that was where I was like she has magic in her.”

“I’ve never talked about it as a musical, but it’s a movie where music is an essential element.”

“The first ways I described Arthur were as weird and aloof and distant, but he has music in him, he has a grace to him. That informed him a lot in the first film. It didn’t seem like that big of a step what we did here.”

But as you can see in the trailer, it’s a seismic notch up. Who knew that was even possible given how much Joker played like a commentary on society, ala Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, more than a DC movie.

The first Joker was a massive hit for Warner Bros/DC, surpassing Deadpool to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, clocking $1.79 billion at the global box office. It scored 11 Oscar noms including Best Picture, winning for Phoenix’s performance and for Original Score.

The new film also carries a R rating for “strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity,” per the MPA.

In Warner Bros’ DC universe, Joker: Folie à Deux is part of DC Elseworlds and is not part of the universe that Peter Safran and James Gunn are building since taking the helm of DC Studios.

The marketing for the studio’s upcoming DC sequel, headlined by Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, got off to a stellar start with 167 million viewers in its first 24 hours. The teaser trailer went online right after it debuted at Warner Bros.’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas.

Sources tell Variety that the “Joker” sequel’s trailer numbers and social engagement surpassed that of the first “Barbie” trailer to become Warner Bros.’ biggest launch in recent years. The release was no doubt bolstered by Lady Gaga’s massive 150 million follower social media footprint. The trailer instantly became the #1 trending video on YouTube on premiere night and currently boasts 15.6 million views and counting on that platform alone, where it remains the #4 trending video nearly two days after its launch.

The “Joker” sequel trailer also dominated X during its first 24 hours, with 10 terms related to the movie trending, including #JokerFolieADeux, Gaga, Harley, Harley Quinn, Joaquin Phoenix, Joker, Joker 2, Joker2, Lady Gaga and Todd Phillips.

The trailer numbers are great news for Warner Bros. Beating “Barbie” is of note, as that film went on to earn $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office for the studio and was last year’s highest-grossing movie. The original “Joker” surpassed $1 billion in 2019; the sequel is aiming for even higher total given this initial interest and the addition of superstar Lady Gaga to the cast.

Among the trailers for the year’s studio tentpoles, “Joker: Folie à Deux” trounced the debut of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (100 million views) and bested Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” (157 million views to become the biggest debut for a Disney animated film). The “Joker” trailer was below Marvel’s “Deadpool and Wolverine,” which set a record earlier this year as the biggest trailer launch of all time with 365 million views. However, the Marvel tentpole launched on Super Bowl Sunday and its viewership numbers factored in the telecast. The “Joker: Folie à Deux” trailer launch was purely digital.

Little is known about the actual plot for “Joker: Folie à Deux” other than it is reportedly a jukebox musical set around Arkham Asylum. Phoenix is back in the title role, which earned him an Oscar for best actor. Gaga stars as Harley Quinn. The supporting cast includes Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung and Harry Lawtey.

“Joker” director Todd Phillips is back for the sequel, too. He said at CinemaCon that calling the movie a musical was not exactly correct.

“I like to say it’s a movie where music is an essential element,” Phillips said. “It doesn’t veer too far from the first film. Arthur has music in him. He has a grace to him.”

“Joker 2” will debut on the big screen on Oct. 4 — exactly five years after the first film. The sequel will screen in the Imax 70mm format.
