American Sniper ($540,700,219)
U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname “Legend.” However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world.
Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to “leave no one behind.” But upon returning to his wife, Taya Renae Kyle (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.

I just saw a TV spot for this that was so annoying:
Baby baby baby baby baby baby
Shut. The. Fuck. Up.
Bradley Cooper dies in the movie. Oh wait, the guy he plays is still alive in real life. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

Bradley Cooper is equal parts overrated and annoying, with a side of dishwater dull.
I just don't see the so called greatness, that Hollywood and everyone else does.

Everybody loves a charming white guy with perfect teeth, that's all it really takes to impress most of em.
Though I still think Cooper hasn't really shown everything he's capable of yet and this will be the true test, if he doesn't do that here, it's never going to happen. People will either accept him for this role or it's pretty much that he'll remain hated by few, loved by most and overpaid by all.

Can't wait for this. Not sure when the film ends, but I'd love to see a follow-up covering the time he returns home to the time of his death.
The help Chris Kyle gave returned veterans suffering PTSD was just as awesome as what he did with his rifle.

First off, fuck everyone hating on Bradley Cooper. Second, I really want to see this movie. I think it looks great and I'm curious to see what all the hype is about and what makes it stand out compared to Eastwood's other movies.

American Sniper, the biopic directed by Clint Eastwood, shot to the top of the holiday weekend’s specialty newcomers, easily setting a Christmas record as it became one of 2014’s biggest limited releases. The year’s most unexpected and controversial limited release, The Interview, reported $2.8 million in 331 theaters, for a solid four-day theater average of $8,459, while Martin Luther King biopic Selma had a strong debut with $48K per theater.
American Sniper, which stars Bradley Cooper as the U.S. military’s most lethal sniper, scored the largest Christmas opening ever for any title in fewer than 10 theaters, with a jaw-dropping, $212,500 4-day per-theater average.

'American Sniper’ Targets Record Jan. $105.2M Four-Day Bow
Warner Bros is reporting that American Sniper is set to post a FSS of $90.2M with a cume to date of $93.6M. By tomorrow with the MLK holiday, the Village Roadshow co-prod cume is looking to post a four-day of $105.2M and an overall cume of $108.6M. Unheard of for any wide release at this time of year. What record didn’t American Sniper break? Among three-day bows, it’s the best posted by a January or February release, beating Passion of the Christ‘s (which opened on a Wednesday) FSS of $83.8M. It’s the largest January weekend ever, beating Avatar‘s $68.5M during it third sesh (Jan. 1-3, 2010) and it’s looking to be the largest R-rated four-day ever, beating 2011’s The Hangover 2, which made $103.4M. A+ CinemaScore across the board among males, females and over/under 25. Everyone always knew the film was going to be the highest opening for an MLK releasee beating last year’s opening record set by Kevin Hart’s Ride Along ($41.5M 3-day, $48.6M 4-day). Audience make-up was 57% guys/43% women with 63% over 25, and 37% under 25. American Sniper also earned the best take for an R-rated IMAX film with an estimated $11.5M over the four day, beating Fox’s Prometheus which made $9M. American Sniper’s per theater: an amazing $25,374 over three days and $29,592 over four-days.

At least Patrick has signed on for S2 of Fargo.
Josh Lucas easily could've been on True Detective.

Sniper Takes Out Super Bowl Record
“I wish there was a universe where American Sniper wasn’t in it!” cried one distribution exec this morning after their movie came up short this weekend. “I actually like this universe we’re living in!” beamed Warner Bros.’ distribution EVP Jeff Goldstein over the third wide weekend of impressive results for Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper. The Village Roadshow co-production made another B.O. touchdown as the highest grossing film ever over Super Bowl weekend with $31.85M. Traditionally the Big Game frame is a challenging one for movies, however most titles make most of their dough during Friday and Saturday. The Warner Bros./Village Roadshow film is expected to eclipse Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds Concert‘s first weekend of $31.12M, the previous title to mint the most over Super Bowl FSS. The cume for American Sniper will be just under $250M by EOD with $248.9M through six weekends. American Sniper saw an amazing 67% hike over its $10M Friday on Saturday with $16.8M. Because of Super Bowl, the film’s Sunday is expected to drop 70%.
Re: American Sniper ($540,700,219)
One thing is very clear, following the smashing success of American Sniper we can expect there to be a lot of tv shows and movies centered around snipers going into production over the next year.

"The Reaper" was recently picked up for a TV mini-series.
Based on US Ranger sniper Nick Irving's book of the same name. The Reaper: Autobiography of One of the Deadliest Special Ops Snipers
I've read a few excerpts over the past couple months (Hardcover is inbound), and I'll definitely be watching.

Re: American Sniper ($540,700,219)
They just don't make sniper movies anymore. I couldn't even name the one I saw but the last great one that actually stuck with me was Enemy at the Gates. However this seems to have reignited a flame for the genre and I'd imagine that out of the dozens of projects which will be utter disappointments, there has got to be a diamond in the rough.
Re: American Sniper ($540,700,219)
I love sniper flicks. I actually watched Enemy at the Gates last week. Enjoyed it when it was released, but it doesn't hold up well. My biggest gripe is the language. It shouldn't have been in English.
I liked Berringer's Sniper series, and Sabotage with Mark Dacascas.

Sniper with Tom Berenger and Billy Zane still holds up.
Was Shooter back in '07 with Marky Mark the last sniper movie prior to this? I can't remember any since.
There are just not very many good sniper movies out there, I remember watching them film Assassins with Sly Stallone when I was 10, it was filmed real close to me. But that movie really sucks.
Full Metal Jacket, to a point.
Re: American Sniper ($540,700,219)
I fucking loathed Shooter - except for Kate Mara in her underwear.
I had actually read that book, and once it was announced I was pumped to hell. Unfortunately Hollywood churned out a turd. Same goes for Jack Reacher. Great source material, crap final product.

There is so much material between both characters. I just wish that instead of trying to cram these dense novels into 110 minute movies, they should really try for 10 episode seasons with them. I'd watch a series about Swagger's missions. Every season would be another book. You keep your lead character but every season is set in a new locale, just like the books. Fully flesh out and develop your sniper characters for the first time ever. Cause I can't even think of a tv show about a sniper. Just shows where characters are ex-snipers who use their skills once a season, like Tim on Justified.

‘American Sniper’ Trial: Guilty Verdict Delivered By Jury
Eddie Ray Routh has been found guilty of capital murder in the deaths of two men, including Navy Seal sniper Chris Kyle, the protagonist of Clint Eastwood’s best picture Oscar nominee American Sniper. Routh was promptly sentenced to life in prison without parole. The jury began deliberations at 7:36 p.m. ET. The murder occurred at a Texas firing range two years ago. Kyle, 38, and his friend Chad Littlefield, 35, who was also killed, took Routh to the firing range for therapeutic purposes. They were dead when officers responded to a 911 call. Prior to his death, Kyle was involved in helping former troops suffering from PTSD.
Defense attorneys for Routh said he had a long history of mental illness, however, prosecutors dismissed that claim saying that Routh knew the difference between right and wrong. Jurors had three choices of guilty, not guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity.
The trial comes in the wake of American Sniper‘s release at the box office where it has broken several January records, becoming Eastwood and Bradley’s Cooper’s highest grossing live action film of all-time with $320.8M. The film won an Oscar for best sound editing on Sunday. Pic was based on Kyle’s bestselling book. Kyle is known as the deadliest sniper in U.S. history with 160 confirmed kills in Iraq.
