Tomb Raider (March 16th) 19593-10
EXCLUSIVE: Evan Daugherty has been set to script Tomb Raider, the reboot of the video game property with the fetching heroine, with Warner Bros joining producer Graham King and MGM. The latter studio has signed on to partner in co-financing and co-producing with MGM. Warner Bros will distribute the film. Daugherty’s recent work includes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Divergent, Snow White And The Huntsman and G.I. Joe 3.

The franchise was first done as a feature in 2001 with Angelina Jolie playing the swashbuckling archaeologist. Between the original and the 2003 sequel, the films grossed $432 million worldwide. The reboot is on a fast track, and there is strong progress to production language in the rights deal with Square Enix, the video game company behind the title. Denis O’Sullivan will oversee for GK Films, Cassidy Lange for MGM and Jon Berg for Warner Bros. The reboot will feature a younger Lara Croft going on her first adventure.

Unfortunately she's wasting away on ABC, she's a series regular on Grey's Anatomy....

I like her on Grey's. She was amazing on Californication but other than that it seemed like she did nothing until she landed on Grey's. I'm just happy she finally got a regular role.

Tomb Raider (March 16th) Collag10
The rumors are swirling around town that producers of the fast-tracked Tomb Raider reboot have narrowed down their list of potential directors to three: Kathryn Bigelow, Catherine Hardwicke, and Mimi Leder.

The reboot is being produced by Warner Bros., MGM, GK Films and Eidos Interactive.

Tricia Brock, whose prolific career directing television includes everything from The Walking Dead to Girls, was previously reported to be attached, but our sources tell us she’s officially passed on the project. Producers are still determined to see “a Michelle MacLaren type” helm the script by Evan Daugherty, and now we’re hearing that Bigelow, Hardwicke, and Leder are on the shortlist to take Brock’s place.

Tomb Raider, based on the best-selling video game series, centers on archeologist Lara Croft as she travels the globe seeking priceless artifacts, battling evil alchemists, vicious mummies– even crocodiles–along the way. The franchise previously spawned two films with Angelina Jolie in the title role, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and The Cradle of Life. While the first installment earned a tidy box office, the sequel was panned by loyal fans and jaded critics alike.

Bigelow, who won an Oscar for her direction of The Hurt Locker and was nominated for Best Picture for Zero Dark Thirty, would certainly be a fantastic choice. Bigelow’s shortlisting could suggest that the Tomb Raider reboot may be taking on a more serious tone–not unlike the Daniel Craig-era of the Bond franchise. Bigelow certainly has what it takes to create tension, manage suspense and direct action, while never losing sight of her characters and their stories.

Leder proved her abilities to handle set-piece heavy action films with The Peacemaker and Deep Impact in the 90s, and her involvement would mark a welcome return to the Hollywood spotlight for the veteran director.

As for Hardwicke, the Twilight director could steer the tone of the project towards in a melodramatic direction. Hardwicke’s schedule, however, has her attached to direct half-a-dozen projects over the next two years, which could spell conflict if producers are pushing for an early 2016 start date.

Given the international success of The Hunger Games franchise, the eager anticipation for the upcoming Wonder Woman film, and movie-going audiences’ general desire to see more female action heroes gracing the big sreen, it seems only natural that the studios would be eager to move forward with Tomb Raider’s re-set. We’ll keep you posted as we try to lock down confirmation, and until then, we’ll just keep hoping that there’s truth to this rumor.

The long-awaited TOMB RAIDER REBOOT has discovered its director, and to the surprise of many, it’s not a ‘Michelle MacLaren’ type after all.

Norwegian director Roar Uthaug, who turned heads earlier this year with his disaster film The Wave, is set to helm the beloved video game franchise’s reboot. Warner Bros. is partnering with MGM to produce and distribute, while GK FilmsGraham King will produce. The action-adventure flick is based on the popular video game series Lara Croft: Tomb Raider from Eidos Interactive, which was previously brought to the big screen in a duo of films starring Angelina Jolie as the globe-trotting, gun-totting British archaeologist.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet, whose script Hibernation landed her on the 2012 Hit List, has been brought on board to rework the script. Previous writers include Evan Daugherty, Marti Noxon, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.

Cassidy Lange is heading up production for MGM, while Drew Crevello will oversee for Warner. Denis O’Sullivan is executive producing for GK.

There has been plenty of speculation as to who would direct the Tomb Raider reboot, which has been in development since at least 2010. It was previously rumored that the studio had their eye on Game of Thrones director Michelle MacLaren, but her responsibilities to Wonder Woman meant she wouldn’t be available. The studio was considering a long list of female candidates, from Mimi Leder and Catherine Hardwicke to Tricia Brock and Lexi Alexander. Ultimately, however, it appears as though Uthaug came out on top.

Uthaug, who graduated from Norwegian Film School in 2002, first gained attention with his breakout feature debut, the slasher flick Cold Prey, which is considered one of the best modern Norwegian horror movies. His catastrophe pic The Wave, released earlier this year, was chosen to as Norway’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film in the upcoming Academy Awards.

Is Daisy Ridley Being Eyed As Lara Croft?
Tomb Raider (March 16th) Star-w10
EXCLUSIVE: Newcomer Daisy Ridley may have hit the motherlode of film franchises when the then-virtual unknown was cast in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but the 23-year-old Brit actress is in the running for another icon: Lara Croft. Deadline understands that the fresh-faced Ridley is one of a number of actresses being considered for the Tomb Raider reboot that Warner Bros and MGM are partnering on to produce and release, with GK Films’ Graham King producing.

While conversations have taken place, this is still very early and there have been no official negotiations or offer yet, with the producers keeping their options wide open at this stage. This is one of THE plum gigs out there for a young actress. The role was famously played by Angelina Jolie at her most kick-ass and pneumatic. Based on the long-running video game franchise, Tomb Raider follows the English archaeologist Lara Croft through a series of adventures heavily inspired by Indiana Jones (and, to a lesser extent, Alan Quartermaine).

The latest adaptation, which has been in development for several years, received a jolt of adrenaline when the video game series was rebooted by game developer Square Enix with 2013’s Tomb Raider, which depicted Croft’s first adventure as an archaeology student, and follow-up Rise Of The Tomb Raider. That younger take on the character’s origin and path to derring-do are believed to have given the film’s producers some creative guidance.

Cassidy Lange is overseeing for MGM, with Drew Crevello doing so for Warners. Denis O’Sullivan of GK Films is overseeing the production.

Ridley, currently shooting Star Wars: Episode VIII, is repped by CAA. Her only confirmed post-Star Wars gig to date is her coming aboard The Eagle Huntress documentary as an exec producer.

BREAKING: EX MACHINA Actress Alicia Vikander Will Play 'Lara Croft' In TOMB RAIDER
Tomb Raider (March 16th) Downlo10

“The Danish Girl” star Alicia Vikander has nabbed one of Hollywood’s most coveted leading roles.

Vikander will be playing Lara Croft in the MGM and GK Films’ “Tomb Raider” reboot, it was announced Thursday. Norwegian helmer Roar Uthaug is on board to direct.

While other actresses had met for the role, including Daisy Ridley, source indicate that Vikander had always been the first choice. The reason for the delay of announcement was that the studio was waiting for a new draft of the script, sources say.

MGM joined the project in 2013, acquiring rights to the popular video game to develop the feature in partnership with Graham King’s GK Films. King, who acquired “Tomb Raider” in 2011 from Square Enix, will serve as producer.

The original “Tomb Raider” was released in 1996 by London-based Eidos, which is now part of Square Enix. The games have sold over 35 million units. Square Enix released a reboot in 2013 with a younger Croft (now 21) being sent off on her first big adventure amid amped-up action and set pieces.

Paramount’s two films starring Angelina Jolie as the British archaeologist were released in 2001 and 2003 and grossed $432 million worldwide.

Warner Bros., which owned 20% of Eidos, subsequently launched development of a “Tomb Raider” project with Dan Lin producing, but the feature rights went to Square Enix after it bought Eidos in 2009 for $120 million.

Warners came on board in early 2015. MGM has teamed with the studio on “Hot Pursuit,” “Max” and “Creed.”

Cassidy Lange is overseeing for MGM; Drew Crevello is leading for Warners and Denis O’Sullivan for GK Films.

Vikander won an Oscar for her performance in “The Danish Girl,” and also garnered attention for her performance in “Ex Machina.” Coming up, the actress has the next movie in the Jason Bourne franchise and “The Oceans Between Us” opposite Michael Fassbender.

I thought Daisy Ridley was a better choice but I'd still held out a sliver of hope after all these years that Camilla Luddington would get called up.

The upcoming “Tomb Raider” movie is set to be released on March 16, 2018, Warner Bros. announced on Thursday.

Alicia Vikander was cast as Lara Croft in late April, shortly after she took home an Oscar for her performance in “The Danish Girl.” The film is something of an origin story, which will follow a young and untested Lara Croft as she fights to survive her first adventure.

“Tomb Raider” is being produced by MGM and Warner Bros., which acquired the rights from GK Films.

March 16, 2018, has long been the rumored release date for “The Flash,” so it’s now clear that Warner Bros. has other plans for that film.

More reason why Camilla Luddington should've been TR, if only she wasn't on Grey's Anatomy. Her schedule probably didn't allow her to do the movie because I know she was considered.

I love the 2013 Tomb Raider game. Asit appears this film is based on that game, I am expecting Lara to go from scared and timid to full-blown psychopath by the end of it. She was fucking brutal with those axe kills.

Some of the lines do sound pretty cheesy, though.

Camilla Luddington did the voice and motion capture for the game but Lara's face was modelled after Megan Farquhar.

Had to look Megan up and she's hot too.

I saw the trailer again right before Justice League and it looks good. We'll see how the movie turns out. Everything so far looks and feels just like the game to me.

Whatever's working for you in that poster will be lost once you watch that trailer. The CGI running and jumping is horrendous Sad .

Decided to watch the second trailer and this one was better than the first one they released. I can see Tomb Raider now and not Alicia.

All I see is terrible CGI.

I love Tomb Raider, but I can't pretend that this isn't going to be a green-screen shit-show. I'll be glad if they prove me wrong, but I don't have that much faith.

Watched this today. It was okay. I wouldn't say it was faithful to the game as it was supposed to be but it was a slightly mediocre origin story of the character. The game was maybe eight to ten hours long and had a nice pace for character growth but this one, when compressed into a two hour film, makes it seem very, very rushed. If you guys have played the game you would know what I mean. I don't want to spoil too much.

It was a lot of green screen but the effects were alright.

Alicia Vikander plays a pretty decent young Lara Croft. I was apprehensive at first but she grew on me.

I would give this a light recommendation. I went into this with really low expectations and enjoyed it. Definitely not a waste of a MoviePass ticket.
