DEADPOOL Has Been Banned In China For Its Graphic Content
deadpool - Deadpool ($771,191,235) - Page 3 13009610
Fanboys worldwide are agog with anticipation for the upcoming release of Fox's R-rated 'anti-superhero' movie Deadpool — it got the most rousing reception of any title previewed at Comic Con last year — but China's censors have taken a far less enthusiastic view of the film.

According to widespread local media reports, Deadpool, which was produced by 20th Century Fox and based on the Marvel comic book character, has been denied permission to screen in China due to its violence, nudity and graphic language.

A source close to the decision at China Film Group tells THR that the reports are indeed accurate.
Directed by Tim Miller and starring Ryan Reynolds as the most foul-mouthed and self-aware superhero — or, anti-hero — in the Marvel catalog, Deadpool hits theaters stateside on Feb. 12.

China's censorship authorities often work with the Hollywood studios to create cleaned-up special cuts of R-rated movies, but sources close to the Deadpool decision say it wasn't possible to excise the offending material without causing plot problems.

China has no ratings system, so the country's media regulator, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT), makes an up-down judgment on all film imports, approving or banning them for consumption by Chinese viewers of all ages.

Despite the film's more adult tone and content, many observers had predicted that Deadpool would find a way into the China market, thanks to the Marvel imprimatur.

Movies based on Marvel comic books have done huge business in China, which is now the world's second-largest theatrical market. Avengers: Age of Ultron grossed $240 million last summer, while more offbeat titles like Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man grossed $96.4 million and $105.4 million, respectively.

Really? Is it the nudity? Because the violence I think they'd be ok with. Now I'm curious to how much nudity there will be in the movie.

Well I've been hearing about a pretty graphic and wild sex montage between Deadpool and Morena's Vanessa Carlysle for months now. But China doesn't really seem to mind horrific violence much but they do have a problem with sex and anything involving ghosts. Talk about a fucked up culture....

Deadpool’ Conquers Thursday With $12.7M, Sets Record For R-Rated Preview
Deadpool set the record for an R-rated Thursday preview and February preview last night with an evening gross of $12.7M at 2,975 theaters. In the record books that beats the $8.6M made by last year’s Fifty Shades of Grey, which was the previous February preview champ. That Universal title sat behind the previous R-rated preview champ, Hangover 2, which made $10.4M from midnight shows in 2011. In its first two days overseas in seven markets, Deadpool amassed $12M; so the Ryan Reynolds pic has already bagged over $25M worldwide.

Weekend four-day estimates for Deadpool currently sit at $60M-$65M at 3,557 theaters, however some non-Fox distribution executives have it much higher — like at $70M-$80M. Previous notable R-rated superhero/comic book film openings include Warner Bros. 300 ($70.9M) and Watchmen ($55.2M).

Deadpool‘s preview night on IMAX  pulled in $2.3M, for a per screen of $6,200.  That’s the best ever for an Imax February release or R-rated title; sixth biggest ever, ahead of Furious 7 and behind Iron Man 3.

If there’s any indication of how big Deadpool‘s opening might be, earlier this week, Fandango reported that the Marvel hero was the ticket firm’s top seller over the last two weeks, outstripping Ant-Man at the same point in their similar sales cycles. Yesterday, MovieTickets.com reported that close to 70% of its Wednesday ticket sales were for Deadpool. In a Fandango survey, 96% say that Deadpool is part of their weekend plans while 93% are excited that there’s an R-rated Marvel movie.

Valentine’s Day is the key day in terms of determining whether Deadpool clicks past $65M. It’s a girl’s choice day when it comes to moviegoing according to one industry tracker. Monday is a better kids day, than adults day.

20th Century Fox has created a number of edgy promos and events for the film. Of note, one sheet/banner ads have sold the film wryly as a romantic comedy tied to Valentine’s Day. Mike’s Harder Lemonade is a promo-partner and has been selling a series of collectible cans. Throughout this week, Deadpool took over five commercial free Viacom shows with integrated marketing running pre-and-post shows. The shows included during the campaign are MTV’s Teen Mom and Ridiculousness, Comedy Central’s Tosh.0, Workaholics and @Midnight With Chris Hardwick, VH1’s Love and Hip Hop, Logo’s Golden Girls and Spike’s Cops.

Deadpool’ Smacking Christian Grey’s February Records With $47.5M+ Friday, Amazing $129M-$136M 4-day
Last year a flock of women flocked to watch wealthy S&M baron Christian Grey’s romantic exploits, making Universal’s Fifty Shades of Grey the biggest February opening of all-time with a $30.3M Friday and $93M four-day holiday weekend. This year, a different type of S&M-looking guy is breaking those records. According to industry estimates this morning, 20th Century Fox’s Marvel superhero pic, Deadpool, thrashed Fifty Shades’ Friday figure by 57% with a projected daily haul of $47.5M (that includes $12.7M in Thursday previews) on its way to a mindblowing 3-day opening of $118.4M-$123M and a 4-day between $129.6M-$136M.

Among 3-day openers before the summer season (which starts in May) Deadpool will likely rank third behind The Hunger Games ($152.5M) and Furious 7 ($147.2M). Similar to Universal with Fifty Shades of Grey last year which carried a $40M cost, Fox should recoup its $58M production cost before P&A on Deadpool by Monday.

Fox has plenty of bragging rights this weekend: In addition to DeadpoolDreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 3 is also poised to cross $100M by EOD Monday. It’s not even the end of February and the Pico lot has racked up three $100M-plus hits in addition to The Revenant.

Deadpool is also a huge win for Ryan Reynolds; easily his best opening of all-time. The leading man had the deck stacked against him with another superhero movie in 2011,  Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern, which despite its $53M opening was considered a bomb given its $200M production cost. Forty-seven percent of the audience cited Reynolds as the reason they showed up, while 59% said it was because Deadpool is a superhero movie.

Simply put, audiences are bewitched by Deadpool‘s  merciless send-up of the Marvel brand, topped by a fair share of nudity, foul-mouthed funny, and fourth-wall breaking. According to social media monitor RelishMix, there’s been a thirst for this character: Outside of the film, there are social media pages dedicated to the comic-book, the Activision video game with a total reach of 587K. Fans are making parody videos dressed as the Reynolds character. Youtube channel Epic Rap Battles has a Deadpool vs. Boba Fett rivalry which has accumulated 18M views, clocking 159K per day.

CinemaScore is an absolute A, not just with all auds, but guys and gals, too. Males showed up in full force at 57% on par with Ant-Man. ComScore PostTrak reports that 88% of moviegoers said they’d recommend Deadpool to a friend. That’s the same recommendation score that Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned during its opening weekend. Further evidence that word of mouth is through the roof: 92% of those polled by PostTrak said they know five friends or family members who would see the movie (Force Awakens scored a 95% in this category). Check out this page’s photo of the line for Deadpool at Edwards Valencia 12 & Imax in Valencia, CA.

For RelishMix, Deadpool‘s social media is more than perfect. The film’s social media universe is weighed at 527M, composed of  25M+ Facebook fans, nearly 2M Twitter followers, 3M Instagram followers and over 496M YouTube views. Reynolds is carrying the torch with 6.3M followers, adding tens of thousands of followers each day. Also, co-star Gina Carano counts 1.3M across Twitter, FB and Instagram.[/b]

Deadpool’ Nabs All-Time R-Rated Record Opening: $135M Over 3-Day
20th Century Fox’s Deadpool is bigger than anyone thought possible. Yes, it has scored the top opening for a February release with $135M over FSS, but it also flogged Matrix Reloaded‘s $91.8M opening record to become the highest R-rated debut of all-time.

After posting the biggest opening day in February with $47.5M, the Marvel character also scored the second biggest day ever for the month with an estimated $41.88M.  The Tim Miller-directed movie’s 4-day is now projected at $150M by Fox with the industry thinking it has a shot at $151M-153M. Typically fanboy films are frontloaded seeing drops of at least a third in their second day. Deadpool dipped -10%. This title is hitting some sort of zeitgeist with moviegoers. PLF screens at 465 repped 13% of Deadpool‘s FSS or $17.6M. That’s the biggest R-rated opening for the PLF format, knocking out its previous $8.7M high from American Sniper. Deadpool is also the second best opening ever for the first installment of a superhero property behind Disney/Marvel’s The Avengers ($207.4M).

All I care about is that Marvel gets their shit together and gives me the R-Rated properties that many of us want, I bet this is giving them all kinds of ideas with their Netflix shows.

I hear ya! Besides Blade and Deadpool, I'm not sure how much of them are adult themed but I'd like to see more whether it's shows or movies.

I was referring to Daredevil and The Punisher. Cool

Whilst I think the R rating was beneficial for this movie, I don't think other R-rated properties would bring this sort of money - because they aren't Deadpool.

Like I read somewhere else, it's essentially Van Wilder with weapons and fighting.

By all means, give us an proper r-rated Blade, DD, Punisher ... shit, I would have loved an R-rated Jessica Jones. I don't see Marvel doing it though. Deadpool is essentially his own little universe.

Oh, yeah, The Punisher too. Just saying that R rated material is small compared to the majority of comic books. Aside from those 3 known characters, I can't think of any even though I'm sure there's more. I didn't know about Jessica Jones until the show.

Yeah, there was a lot of hype since that leak. People have been wanting to see a movie for Deadpool for a while.

I just hope they don't move forward with thoat Blade's Daughter movie they were talking last Summer cause Trinity already handled that plot line with Whistler and that movie was a steaming pile of shit.

Will ‘Deadpool’ Spawn More R-Rated Superhero Movies?
“The Crow” is almost ready to fly, but will “The Boys” be back before WB’s “Lobo” or its darker Vertigo titles?

In Hollywood, conventional wisdom encourages studios to repeat the success others have had with a particular genre, but the astounding performance of Ryan Reynolds‘ R-rated superhero movie “Deadpool” may prove difficult to repeat.

Sure, 20th Century Fox which will no doubt greenlight a “Deadpool” sequel soon, if it hasn’t already. But other studios may have a tough time replicating its success.
Beating the odds and blowing away industry tracking estimates, “Deadpool” wisecracked its way to a $150 million opening weekend despite an R-rating that was anything but restrictive. It broke numerous box office records, including biggest opening for an R-rated movie in North America, biggest January/February opening, biggest opening for a feature directorial debut, and Fox’s biggest opening ever, surpassing “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith” in 2005.

The question now is whether the raunchy comic book movie will spark more R-rated superhero movies around Hollywood. Though it’s tempting to suggest a new dawn is upon the comic book movie genre, the truth is that it’s not so simple.

A unique outlier, “Deadpool” offered the perfect storm of elements as the sort of low-risk/high-reward project that proved worth the $58 million gamble for 20th Century Fox.
After inexplicably appearing with his mouth sewn shut in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” the acerbic character laid dormant for years despite being a fan favorite. After several years, “Deadppol” director Tim Miller shot a high-octane test sequence to show Fox executives what a movie about the Merc With a Mouth might look like. They were impressed, but some reluctance remained. That is, until the action sequence was leaked online, where it was greeted with open arms.

So right off the bat, “Deadpool” was destined to ride into theaters on a wave of goodwill, though the film still had its skeptics. But the studio set the movie up for success by keeping costs down — the film boasts a modest $58 million budget for a superhero movie set in the “X-Men” universe — and throwing its weight behind an innovative marketing campaign that emphasized the self-deprecating tone of the film and embraced its hero’s irreverent sense of humor.

But “Deadpool” will likely prove the exception to the rule. There simply aren’t many name-brand superhero movies who lend themselves to an R-rated adaptation. Sure, the DC Movie Universe is thematically darker than the Marvel Cinematic Universe but don’t expect Warner Bros. to start making R-rated Batman movies. Superheroes are meant to inspire, and children and teenagers are every bit as important as adults when it comes to the audience for these films.

Surveying the landscape, Relativity is (supposedly) close to starting production on “The Crow,” which first flew into theaters in 1994 to the tune of $50 million at the domestic box office. That film was R-rated and the reboot will likely be as well, though that project has been in motion for years and can’t be attributed to the success of “Deadpool.”

While “Deadpool” boasts the Marvel brand, it is not a film from Marvel Studios, which is expected to continue its line of PG-13 superheroes, especially since those films are released by Disney, which doesn’t distribute R-rated movies under its own label.

If “Deadpool” paves a runway for another R-rated superhero movie to take off from, look for Warner Bros. to get behind “Lobo,” which stalled out in development with Dwayne Johnson attached to star before he decided to play Black Adam in WB’s “Shazam!” That character would lend itself to a mid-budget, R-rated movie, though Warners may also wish to experiment with its Vertigo titles, which include Neil Gaiman‘s dark comic book series “The Sandman.”

Elsewhere around town, “Deadpool” could give new life to “The Boys” at Paramount, where director Adam McKay has never been hotter thanks to “The Big Short.” Following a CIA squad tasked with keeping superheroes in line by any means necessary, McKay has been pushing to make “The Boys” for years, and “Deadpool” may represent a flicker of hope at the end of a long development tunnel.

Comic book creator Mark Millar clearly thinks “Deadpool” bodes well for the future of his “Nemesis” movie. “You hear that noise? That’s the sound of the Nemesis movie’s R-rating being confirmed,” Millar tweeted as “Deadpool” estimates skyrocketed on Friday.

Millar knows first-hand that there’s an audience for R-rated comic book movies, having created “Kick-Ass,” the critically acclaimed movie that grossed $96 million worldwide, though it’s sequel only took in $60 million worldwide.

“X-Men: First Class” screenwriter Zack Stentz expressed concern that Hollywood would learn the wrong lessons from “Deadpool.” He tweeted, “I’m sure terrible lessons will be learned by Deadpool’s success – ‘Make it cheap & sweary, with jokes!’ but good ones, too. Make it DIFFERENT.”

It’s true that the superhero genre has grown stale of late, as Hollywood offers us variations on the same origin story over and over. When comic book fans would rather watching “Daredevil” or “Jessica Jones” on Netflix than the “Fantastic Four” reboot, there’s trouble in Superheroland. Perhaps that’s why “Deadpool” felt like a breath of fresh air, salty language and all.

That said, every superhero has its limits. And just because 20th Century Fox hit a home run with “Deadpool” doesn’t mean Hollywood is preparing to bet its future on R-rated comic book movies.

“Everyone is trying to explain the phenomenon of ‘Deadpool’ as if somehow this represents some replicable seismic shift in the genre. They made a fantastic film and marketed it brilliantly. ‘Hancock’ could have been genre-bending had the studio had the guts to go with the R,” tweeted veteran publicist Steve Elzer. “They [Fox] had the balls to really go for it and the pay off was a film that worked on every level. Others will try to chase it and will fail. You can’t catch lightning in a bottle.”

That may be true, but you can expect many will try anyway.

Stephan Lang Lobbies For CABLE Role

In Deadpool's post-credits scene, Wade himself revealed that his on-again-off-again partner Cable is scheduled to appear in the sequel. As for who could take the role, 'Pool jokingly offered a few suggestions, including Mel Gibson, Dolph Lundgren, and Keira Knightley.

However, Avatar actor Stephen Lang has begun lobbying for the role on social media, posting pictures of his workout routine on Twitter and namedropping both Cable and Deadpool.
"Shakespeare:"CABLEs of perdurable toughness". Slang: Just staying fit. Training another story. Let's go! #Deadpool"

He's perfect for it. I hope he gets it. With the fans behind him, this could actually happen and I'm sure Reynolds would approve. Assuming Cable is in the second movie because there is already a script I think.

The sequel was greenlit before opening weekend and yes Cable's name has been all over any mention of it.

I didn't even read the article. So that's what the post-credit is all about. Damn! Well, at least there is the other one.

When the first movie in a planned franchise destroys long standing records in 3 days, yeah sequels are going to happen so you can count on Deadpool 2 and almost certainly X-Force.

Haven't seen Avatar, but I don't mind the idea of Lang as Cable. I'd have considered someone a bit taller, but Wolverine is suppose to be a short-arse, yet you couldn't find a better Logan than Hugh Jackman (you could find better scripts for the movies though).

Of all those names, absolutely 'no' to Mel Gibson.

Not because he's bad, but because there is only one comic book role for him, and that's the faithful adaption of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.

That old beaten cagey Batman is perfect for Gibson. Of course we won't get it because we have 10 years of Batfleck to sit through yet.

I can see Stephen Lang as Cable. I think he would be a pretty good choice. Glad to know this movie did really well. I remember some people on forums were getting angry at Deadpool's costume color or whatever when it was first displayed. Looks like everything worked out fine. : )

Definitely want to catch this but will probably see it the first weekend in March on a Sunday matinee.

Some fanboys lose their shit over coloring. I myself don't like that The Flash is missing his yellow boots on the show but it doesn't drive me nuts it just makes me hope they'll get it right eventually but for some fanboys, the color destroys the entire experience.
