Papillon (Malek / Hunnam) (August 24, 2018)
Mr. Robot star Rami Malek is negotiating to star with Charlie Hunnam in Papillon, the remake of the 1973 classic film. Hunnam will play the role originated by Steve McQueen and Malek is in talks to play the role originated by Dustin Hoffman. The film will shoot in September, directed by Michael Noer (Northwest) from a script by Prisoners writer Aaron Guzikowski. The picture is backed by Red Granit and Joey McFarland, riza aziz, David Koplan, Ram Bergman and Roger Corbi are producing.
The film is a contemporary retelling of the original, which was based on the memoirs of convicted felon and fugitive Henri Charriere, who staged an epic escape from Devil’s island, a notorious penal colony in French Guiana, South America. The petty criminal from the Parisian underworld was unjustly convicted of murder in 1930s France, and he was aided by Louis Dega, a quirky counterfeiter. That’s the role Malek will play; their relationship starts with Charriere providing protection for Dega from fellow thug inmates, and it grows into a bond and Degas agrees to finance Papillon’s prison escape.

Big fan of the original and Rami's casting intrigues me, though Hunnam is no McQueen.
Red Granite is backing this? Oh no....

I do too. Great film that nobody ever seems to mention when they discuss prison films.

You'd think Shawshank was the only prison movie ever made because it's the #1 go to film that is discussed in every tv show or movie, every time that discussion is had.
What do you think of Hunnam as Papillon? He's a decent actor with questionable accent skills and I don't know how to feel about this casting. Papillon feels like a role written for Fassy but instead they went with a Jax Teller.....

Not sold on Charlie as Henri, could go either way.
Rami will be great as Dega.
