Spider-Man is OUT of the MCU, Holland Likely Done
Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony to Release Extended Cut In Theaters) ($1.8 Billion Worldwide Box Office) Spider12
The move, which would see the character exit the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comes after Disney requested a bigger piece of the films going forward.

Following the news that Spider-Man: Far from Home has become Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing release of all time, the studio is set to part ways with Marvel Studios, the film's co-producer, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The breakdown between the two parties came after Marvel and its parent company, Disney, requested a bigger piece of Spider-Man movies going forward, a suggestion which Sony turned down in preference for an extension of the existing agreement, which sees Marvel receiving a modest five percent of first-dollar gross, as well as all merchandising revenue.

Sony film studio chief Tom Rothman and Marvel president Kevin Feige have been talking for months. In the end, neither party was willing to cede enough ground to come to an agreement, leading to the breakup of the partnership and removal of Feige from his producing role on any future Spider-Man movies from Sony.

A Marvel/Sony split also means that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is likely to disappear entirely from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, just months after Far From Home heralded the start of the next major storyline, following the conclusion of the seven-year-long Thanos arc.

His absence is likely to leave a significant hole in the fictional world, especially coming on the heels of both Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers leaving Marvel with this year’s Avengers: Endgame. Holland had appeared in five MCU releases, with Far From Home positioning Spider-Man as a central character in the mythology going forward.

Spider-Man first swung into the MCU with 2016's Captain America: Civil War, thanks to a landmark 2015 deal between Sony and Marvel which allowed the character to appear in Marvel Studios films such as Avengers: Infinity War. It also saw Marvel co-produce Spider-Man films with Sony. The deal came after the underwhelming box office performance of the Andrew Garfield-led The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), and Feige and the Marvel Studios team were credited with revitalizing the character on the big screen, with part of the Marvel-produced films' success due to the inclusion of popular MCU characters such as Downey's Tony Stark or Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury.

Sony has had the film rights to Spider-Man since 1999, an era in which Marvel was recovering from bankruptcy and had licensed out a number of its characters to film studios. In the intervening decades, Marvel has gained the film rights back to most of its characters, with Spider-Man being by far the most popular not held by the studio.

In addition to Spider-Man, Sony has the rights to a number of Spider-Man-related characters, such as Venom. Tom Hardy starred as Venom in the 2018 eponymous film that earned $856 million globally and has a sequel in the works. The studio also has Jared Leto set to play Morbius, a vampire character from the Spider-Man mythos.

Sony announced Monday that Far From Home had surpassed Skyfall to become the studio’s most successful release with a worldwide haul of $1.109 billion; the movie is set for a rerelease on Aug. 29 with four minutes of additional footage. Spider-Man: Homecoming, the other Marvel Studios-produced film, grossed $880.2 million.

So fucking dumb. Say what you will about them, but I can’t see anyone denying that Marvel was the driving force behind the movie doing so well, Sony should just be happy to be involved.

That being said, Far From Home especially made Peter super important with Tony leaving tech for him and now he’ll leave a huge gap in the MCU.

This might be a good thing. Now we can get another sweet reboot. Hopefully we get another origin story because there are still people out there who have never geard of Spider-Man and have no idea how he got his powers.

This is a terrible move. I don't think Sony will do well without them. Why does it feel like this role is cursed? I don't want to see this get rebooted again.

Miles seems like the logical choice in this situation so they'll probably just go with a black Peter Parker next.

Well Holland is now freed up for the Uncharted franchise.

Spider-Man Will Stay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony to Release Extended Cut In Theaters) ($1.8 Billion Worldwide Box Office) Intro-10
After briefly breaking up, Sony Pictures and Marvel have found a way to get back in the Spider-Man business together.

On Friday, the two companies jointly announced that Marvel Studios and its president, Kevin Feige, will produce the third film in the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” series. It will once again feature Tom Holland reprising his role as the titular hero.
The rumor mill roared back to life this week with hints that the two companies were close to brokering a new agreement.

Over the summer, news broke that the Disney, Marvel’s parent company, and Sony had reached an impasse over a new financing deal. Disney wanted the film to be financed on a 50/50 basis, with Feige remaining in a consulting producer capacity. Sony is believed to have proposed keeping the arrangement under the current terms, which stipulate that Marvel receives about 5% of first-dollar gross and all merchandising revenues.

The new deal was signed late on Thursday night. Negotiations involved top players from both studios, including Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman, Feige and Walt Disney Studios co-chairs Alan Horn and Alan Bergman. In exchange for lending Feige’s producing prowess, Marvel and Disney will receive roughly 25% of the profits, according to insiders. Disney will retain its merchandising rights and will put up roughly a quarter of the financing. As part of the arrangement, Spider-Man will also appear in one future Marvel Studios film.

The film is scheduled for release on July 16, 2021.
Amy Pascal will also produce through Pascal Pictures, as she has on the first two Holland-led films.

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Feige said in a statement. “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

Pascal was equally euphoric in her statement. “This is terrific,” she said. “Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in ‘Far From Home’ and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes.”

Marvel has licensed the rights to Spider-Man to Sony for nearly two decades, an agreement they forged prior to Disney’s $4 billion acquisition of the comics company in 2009. Sony achieved critical and financial acclaim with its first round of Spider-Man movies, which were directed by Sam Raimi and starred Tobey Maguire. Its second effort, starring Andrew Garfield and directed by Marc Webb, were far less successful, sending the studio back to the drawing board.

By bringing Marvel and Feige back into the fold with 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” the studio was able to recapture the creative mojo of the first series. It also got a boost from having Holland’s web-spinner appear in Avengers movies, with Spidey becoming a key member of the super-team. Sony said it was pleased that a deal had been reached

“We have had a great collaboration over the last four years, and our mutual desire to continue was equal to that of the many fans,” said Robert Lawson, chief communications officer for Sony Pictures Entertainment. “We are delighted to be moving forward together.”

Jon Watts In Final Talks To Return As Director Of Third ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ MovieSpider-Man: No Way Home (Sony to Release Extended Cut In Theaters) ($1.8 Billion Worldwide Box Office) Spider13
EXCLUSIVE: With Sony and Disney/Marvel having agreed to co-financing terms on the third Spider-Man Homecoming movie Friday, it should come as no surprise to hear that Jon Watts is in talks to return to the $2 billion-grossing franchise he directed. This is great news for fans of the series as it means continuity.

The hope we hear from sources is that Watts’ deal will be wrapped soon. Essentially, Sony and Disney/Marvel sought to hammer out their co-financing agreement on the third Spidey pic first, before turning their attention to re-upping Watts.

At the time the Sony-Disney battle went down last month, Watts didn’t have a deal for the next Spider-Man picture and he wasn’t a lock to return.

Kevin Feige has a knack for choosing innovative voices in independent cinema to steer his Marvel movies. Watts was chosen off his 2015 Kevin Bacon movie Cop Car which made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. He delivered a fun, boyish spirit to the third reiteration of Spider-Man, which the previous reboot by Sony lacked in its gloomy tone.

Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming delivered an $880 million worldwide gross to Sony, while this past July’s Spider-Man: Far From Home was the Culver City lot’s highest-grossing pic ever with $1.13 billion worldwideThe first Homecoming is estimated to have profited $200M after all ancillaries. Amy Pascal will also produce Homecoming 3 through Pascal Pictures.

As reported this morning, after months of negotiations, Disney will fund 25% of the third Spider-Man: Homecoming for a 25% equity stake, while Sony continues to get a distribution fee. The Tom Holland Spider-Man character will then be seen in another Disney/Marvel movie.

Daredevil Rights Will Go Back to Marvel as Spider-Man 3 Begins Filming, Coincidence?
Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony to Release Extended Cut In Theaters) ($1.8 Billion Worldwide Box Office) Darede12
The rights to Daredevil will reportedly revert to Marvel at the end of this month, meaning that the MCU can finally use him in future movie projects. Fans were left disappointed when it was announced that Netflix had decided not to continue the seminal series, with many still hoping that the show will return with the original cast. The news just happens to coincide with Spider-Man 3 beginning production, and it has long been rumored that Matt Murdock will show up in the latest Peter Parker adventure. So is this all just a coincidence?

The rights situation between Marvel and Netflix is a somewhat confusing one. Whilst Marvel Studios do still retain the rights to the Daredevil property, as well as the rest of The Defenders, the initial agreement between Marvel and Netflix stipulated that should any of the superhero series be axed, Marvel Studios would have to refrain from using the characters for exactly 18 months after the shows were canceled.

As a result of Marvel's agreement with the streaming service, they have been unable to include the characters in any of their recent shows or movies. However, with the comic book giant having mastered the art of planning ahead, it would not be too surprising if they already have ideas in place for how to fold the likes of Daredevil into proceedings, whether on the big screen or on Disney+.

Following a very well-received third season, the cancellation of Daredevil left both fans and cast members stunned. The series ended with our hero Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer who fights crime under the guise of Daredevil, beating the villainous Kingpin into submission. With the tyrannical gangster back behind bars, and Matt agreeing to once again work alongside his friends Foggy and Karen, the final shot reveals that newly introduced supervillain Bullseye is alive and ready to wreak havoc with his particular set of skills.

Sadly, Charlie Cox, the man behind the devil mask, does not sound too optimistic about this version of the Man Without Fear continuing with Disney+. "I don't feel that way, no. And, I don't know why I don't feel that way," the actor said previously. "But, I haven't been given any reason to believe that. And, from a cynical point of view, it just feels like maybe I'm trying to protect myself, 'cause I'd love nothing more than to do it again."

In the past, Cox has also been quick to debunk rumors that the Hell's Kitchen vigilante would show up in the upcoming Spider-Man 3 alongside Tom Holland. Or at least, that it would not include his involvement.

Daredevil is not the only character caught up in the web of ownership between Marvel Studios and Netflix, with the rights to Iron Fist, Luke Cage reportedly having already reverted, with the studio giant able to use The Punisher as early as next year.

This begs the question though, what should Marvel do with the characters that were formally adapted by Netflix? Would audiences want to see the individual shows continue on Disney+? Or perhaps they would instead like to see them folded into the cinematic events of the MCU? Of course, it is entirely possible, and arguably more likely, that Marvel will reboot all of The Defenders when they eventually make their Marvel-owned debut. Until then, Daredevil and the rest of the individual shows are available to stream on Netflix. This comes to us courtesy of Culture Crave.

I have no faith in Disney to bring back Netflix's Daredevil or The Punisher.

However, that doesn't mean a new Matt Murdock couldn't be introduced into the MCU now.

Spider-Man 3 Rumored To Bring Back Charlie Cox As Daredevil
Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony to Release Extended Cut In Theaters) ($1.8 Billion Worldwide Box Office) Charli10
Marvel Studios and Sony's Spider-Man 3 is rumored to be bringing back Charlie Cox as Daredevil. Cox debuted as the Man Without Fear in the first Marvel Cinematic Universe TV spinoff released on Netflix: Daredevil. He returned to reprise the role through Daredevil season 3, and joined the team-up of other New York City based superheroes in The Defenders. Daredevil was cancelled after season 3 in late 2018, but Marvel Studios had to wait two years for the character's rights to revert back before they could use Matt Murdock in their own projects.

Now, Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man 3 is currently filming and, based on reports, is stacking up a massive supporting cast pulling not only from the MCU, but past Spider-Man franchises. Reportedly, Jamie Foxx is back as Electro, after playing the villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opposite Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker. More recently, it was reported that Alfred Molina is returning as Doctor Octopus, who he played in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 opposite Tobey Maguire's wall-crawling superhero. Additionally, Garfield is reportedly coming back for Spider-Man 3, while Maguire is in talks to return as well. In addition to Benedict Cumberbatch appearing as Doctor Strange, it seems Spider-Man 3 is including another NYC-based MCU hero.

Today, Murphy's Multiverse reports Cox is returning as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil in Spider-Man 3. According to the site's sources, the deal has been in place for months. For now, this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt as Murphy’s Multiverse is still a relatively new site, though they have proven to have trustworthy sources in certain cases. Still, neither Marvel nor Sony - nor Cox himself - have confirmed Daredevil's return for Spider-Man 3.

Murphy's Multiverse's report doesn't indicate how Cox's Daredevil may fit into the story of Spider-Man 3, but it's long been speculated that the Man Without Fear's alter ego, the lawyer Matt Murdock, may come to the aid of Tom Holland's Peter Parker. Holland's last solo Spidey movie ended with him being unmasked by the MCU's J. Jonah Jameson - with J.K. Simmons returning to a revamped version of the role he played in Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. Although Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) died, he pulled some strings to have Jameson report Spider-Man killed Mysterio and out Peter Parker as the wall-crawling superhero's alter ego. This occurred in the Spider-Man: Far From Home post-credits scene and set up the MCU's Spider-Man 3.

Having Murdock help Peter as a lawyer would perhaps be the most obvious way for Marvel Studios to officially bring Daredevil into the MCU, with the potential to spin him back out into a solo movie or TV show. Since Netflix's Daredevil show was created by Marvel TV - a separate branch in Marvel Entertainment to Marvel Studios - it wasn't as connected to the larger MCU as the upcoming Marvel Studios produced Disney+ series will be. As such, any future show or movie starring Cox as Daredevil would be much more connected than the character's previous outing, which is an exciting prospect. If this rumor proves to be true, Cox's Daredevil could team up with Spider-Man - a crossover many have wanted for years. That said, whether Daredevil does show up in Spider-Man 3 and what his MCU future is, still remains to be seen until more confirmation arrives.

So many characters! Really excited to see Tobey and Alfred come back. This means that The Punisher and the others are part of this universe too so that's cool. They should really give them a second chance.

I think I remember this issue or at least this cover. I believe he only wounds him and doesn't actually kill him but I could be wrong.

Frank blew Spidey up in "What If" with a fake Doc Oc decoy loaded with thirty pounds of explosives.

Punisher killed most of the Marvel Universe at one time or another. Cool

In "Punisher kills The Marvel Universe" Frank starts all the killing with Spidey and shoots him in the face.

Wow! The man has some serious issues. Doesn't even tell him why he's about to shoot him in the face. Maybe it's best not to bring him in the MCU just yet.

Daredevil And Echo Will Reportedly Be In A Relationship In The MCU
Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony to Release Extended Cut In Theaters) ($1.8 Billion Worldwide Box Office) Echo-d10
According to all the signs, Charlie Cox is heading back to the MCU as Daredevil. We don’t exactly know Marvel Studios’ full plans for the Man Without Fear, but it’s looking like they’ll want to put their own stamp on him and will effectively be rebooting the continuity surrounding the character once he returns. And this appears to include giving him a different love interest.

Yes, as per a recent report, Matt Murdock will spark up a romance with a major new superheroine. Following her casting in Hawkeye, it’s been announced that Alaqua Cox (no relation to Charlie) will go on to star in her own Disney Plus series as Echo AKA Maya Lopez, one of the rare deaf superheroes in the Marvel universe. Not only that, but Geekosity is now claiming that Charlie Cox is set to join his namesake in Echo, following his cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home. And, just as in the comics, Daredevil and the titular character will apparently develop a relationship in the MCU.

The outlet notes that the idea is to drop DD into Echo as a way of supplying the series with a bit of extra buzz, given that she’s not a particularly famous name on her own. Introducing her to audiences in Hawkeye first should help drum up excitement as well, though.

As created by David Mack and Joe Quesada, Echo is a Native American Olympic-level athlete who has “photographic reflexes,” meaning she can perfectly copy someone’s movements just by watching them.

Of course, on his Netflix show, Murdock already had a trio of love interests. Namely, Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) and Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung). Previous intel suggested that all of the main cast of Daredevil would return to the MCU alongside Cox, so the fact that Marvel allegedly won’t move forward with a Matt/Karen romance doesn’t necessarily mean Woll isn’t coming back.

In any case, Echo is in development now, but it could be a couple of years away from release. Daredevil, meanwhile, looks set to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, coming this December.

Never heard of her but clearly they want the Netflix cast back it seems and I'm all aboard for that. Even just them showing up in other shows/movies is cool.

I hope they aren't throwing out the Netflix Daredevil cannon while keeping the same Matt Murdock. However, the latest rumors seem to indicate it being nothing more than a cameo appearance. Murdock won't be suiting up as DD, just making a brief legal cameo.

I'd also love to see D'Onofrio's Kingpin square off with Spidey in a future movie so keeping the established cannon is important, especially with DC being such a mess these days.

Alfred Molina Explains What Will Be Different About His Doc Ock in 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'
Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony to Release Extended Cut In Theaters) ($1.8 Billion Worldwide Box Office) Alfred10
Alfred Molina first took on the nuclear-physicist-turned-megalomaniac Otto Octavius in the 2004 Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man 2. He is now reprising the role over 15 years later in the Tom Holland-led installment Spider-Man: No Way Home. Molina told Variety that he was “under orders not to talk about it” while shooting. However, the news “is all over the internet,” explained Molina, before labeling himself “the worst kept secret in Hollywood.” Molina then dished on the character’s return, giving a glimpse into a behind-the-scenes conversations he had with No Way Home director Jon Watts.

Speaking of working on No Way Home, Molina said “It was wonderful. It was very interesting going back after 17 years to play the same role, given that in the intervening years, I now have two chins, a wattle, crow’s feet and a slightly dodgy lower back.”

In Spider-Man 2, a lab accident transforms Peter Parker’s to-be mentor into the murderous Doc Ock - aptly named for the mechanical tentacles shooting out from his back. Doc Ock comes in direct conflict with Peter Parker as he yearns to perfect his experimental fusion reactor at all costs. Doc Ock wreaks havoc upon New York City until Parker appeals to the benevolence and humanity laying deep beneath Ock’s villainous surface. Ock then offs himself and his reactor into the East River, leading to his ultimate demise.

Spider-Man: No Way Home must explain how Doc Ock has come back from the dead, to which Watts said, “In this universe, no one really dies.” His reentrance will reportedly pick up from that “final” moment in the river, presumably allowing some multiverse magic to take the reins. Though Marvel Studios has rarely disappointed on the narrative front, Molina shared the personal dilemmas he had surrounding his return.

Speaking of the role, Molina explained that he was worried about his physicality. He understood that technical effects could remove the years visually but could not reverse the aging process in terms of movement. Molina referenced The Irishman, sharing, “They made Robert De Niro’s face younger, but when he was fighting, he looked like an older guy. He looked like an old guy! That’s what worried me about doing it again.” Yet, Molina then remembered a pivotal detail: “the tentacles do all the work!” Molina explained that “the arms are doing all the killing and smashing and breaking,” and he must merely maintain a menacing expression fixated on the camera.

Though neither Sony nor Marvel have explicitly confirmed the actor’s return, the news has been out for quite some time, and this interview merely gave fans another tidbit of information to theorize about. No Way Home is currently scheduled to premiere December 17, 2021.

I've read about rumored appearances from Molina's Ock and Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin to even Tobey McGuire. Not to forget those Daredevil and She-Hulk rumors too.

The rumor mills are in over drive these days.

BossLogic is creative as hell. I still don't understand why the studios don't hire him for movie posters.

And there is no way Tom Holland's Spider-Man can take on Doc Ock, he's too strong for him. It would have to be Tobey's Spider-Man. But I like how he meshed them together in that poster.

Are you saying Tom's Spidey is too strong for Doc Ock, or Doc Ock is too strong for Tom's Spidey?

Because Tom's Spidey has all the cool Stark tech.

Doc Ock is too strong for Tom's Spidey. He might have the tech but none of the experience Tobey's Spidey has.

None of the experience? That’s just stupid. Before facing Doc Oc, Toby had only fought his friend’s dad. Tom fought both against and with the Avengers, fought his girlfriend's dad and a lunatic with a shit ton drones with firepower.
