The Harvey Weinstein Scandal
The Predators Thread 00inqu10

Two decades ago, the Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein invited Ashley Judd to the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel for what the young actress expected to be a business breakfast meeting. Instead, he had her sent up to his room, where he appeared in a bathrobe and asked if he could give her a massage or she could watch him shower, she recalled in an interview.

“How do I get out of the room as fast as possible without alienating Harvey Weinstein?” Ms. Judd said she remembers thinking.

In 2014, Mr. Weinstein invited Emily Nestor, who had worked just one day as a temporary employee, to the same hotel and made another offer: If she accepted his sexual advances, he would boost her career, according to accounts she provided to colleagues who sent them to Weinstein Company executives. The following year, once again at the Peninsula, a female assistant said Mr. Weinstein badgered her into giving him a massage while he was naked, leaving her “crying and very distraught,” wrote a colleague, Lauren O’Connor, in a searing memo asserting sexual harassment and other misconduct by their boss.

“There is a toxic environment for women at this company,” Ms. O’Connor said in the letter, addressed to several executives at the company run by Mr. Weinstein.

An investigation by The New York Times found previously undisclosed allegations against Mr. Weinstein stretching over nearly three decades, documented through interviews with current and former employees and film industry workers, as well as legal records, emails and internal documents from the businesses he has run, Miramax and the Weinstein Company.

During that time, after being confronted with allegations including sexual harassment and unwanted physical contact, Mr. Weinstein has reached at least eight settlements with women, according to two company officials speaking on the condition of anonymity. Among the recipients, The Times found, were a young assistant in New York in 1990, an actress in 1997, an assistant in London in 1998, an Italian model in 2015 and Ms. O’Connor shortly after, according to records and those familiar with the agreements.

In a statement to The Times on Thursday afternoon, Mr. Weinstein said: “I appreciate the way I’ve behaved with colleagues in the past has caused a lot of pain, and I sincerely apologize for it. Though I’m trying to do better, I know I have a long way to go.”

He added that he was working with therapists and planning to take a leave of absence to “deal with this issue head on.”

Lisa Bloom, a lawyer advising Mr. Weinstein, said in a statement that “he denies many of the accusations as patently false.” In comments to The Times earlier this week, Mr. Weinstein said that many claims in Ms. O’Connor’s memo were “off base” and that they had parted on good terms.

Some of Mr. Weinstein’s films include, from left to right, “Sex, Lies, and Videotape,” “Pulp Fiction” and “Good Will Hunting.”

He and his representatives declined to comment on any of the settlements, including providing information about who paid them. But Mr. Weinstein said that in addressing employee concerns about workplace issues, “my motto is to keep the peace.”

Ms. Bloom, who has been advising Mr. Weinstein over the last year on gender and power dynamics, called him “an old dinosaur learning new ways.” She said she had “explained to him that due to the power difference between a major studio head like him and most others in the industry, whatever his motives, some of his words and behaviors can be perceived as inappropriate, even intimidating.”

Though Ms. O’Connor had been writing only about a two-year period, her memo echoed other women’s complaints. Mr. Weinstein required her to have casting discussions with aspiring actresses after they had private appointments in his hotel room, she said, her description matching those of other former employees. She suspected that she and other female Weinstein employees, she wrote, were being used to facilitate liaisons with “vulnerable women who hope he will get them work.”

The allegations piled up even as Mr. Weinstein helped define popular culture. He has collected six best-picture Oscars and turned out a number of touchstones, from the films “Sex, Lies, and Videotape,” “Pulp Fiction” and “Good Will Hunting” to the television show “Project Runway.” In public, he presents himself as a liberal lion, a champion of women and a winner of not just artistic but humanitarian awards.

In 2015, the year Ms. O’Connor wrote her memo, his company distributed “The Hunting Ground,” a documentary about campus sexual assault. A longtime Democratic donor, he hosted a fund-raiser for Hillary Clinton in his Manhattan home last year. He employed Malia Obama, the oldest daughter of former President Barack Obama, as an intern this year, and recently helped endow a faculty chair at Rutgers University in Gloria Steinem’s name. During the Sundance Film Festival in January, when Park City, Utah, held its version of nationwide women’s marches, Mr. Weinstein joined the parade.

“From the outside, it seemed golden — the Oscars, the success, the remarkable cultural impact,” said Mark Gill, former president of Miramax Los Angeles when the company was owned by Disney. “But behind the scenes, it was a mess, and this was the biggest mess of all,” he added, referring to Mr. Weinstein’s treatment of women.

Dozens of Mr. Weinstein’s former and current employees, from assistants to top executives, said they knew of inappropriate conduct while they worked for him. Only a handful said they ever confronted him.

Mr. Weinstein enforced a code of silence; employees of the Weinstein Company have contracts saying they will not criticize it or its leaders in a way that could harm its “business reputation” or “any employee’s personal reputation,” a recent document shows. And most of the women accepting payouts agreed to confidentiality clauses prohibiting them from speaking about the deals or the events that led to them.

Charles Harder, a lawyer representing Mr. Weinstein, said it was not unusual for companies to enter into settlements to avoid lengthy and costly litigation. And, he added, “it’s not evidence of anything.”

At Fox News, where the conservative icons Roger E. Ailes and Bill O’Reilly were accused of harassment, women have received payouts well into the millions of dollars. But most of the women involved in the Weinstein agreements collected between roughly $80,000 and $150,000, according to people familiar with the negotiations.

In the wake of Ms. O’Connor’s 2015 memo, some Weinstein Company board members and executives, including Mr. Weinstein’s brother and longtime partner, Bob, 62, were alarmed about the allegations, according to several people who spoke on the condition of anonymity. In the end, though, board members were assured there was no need to investigate. After reaching a settlement with Mr. Weinstein, Ms. O’Connor withdrew her complaint and thanked him for the career opportunity he had given her.

“The parties made peace very quickly,” Ms. Bloom said.

Through her lawyer, Nicole Page, Ms. O’Connor declined to be interviewed. In the memo, she explained how unnerved she was by what she witnessed or encountered while a literary scout and production executive at the company. “I am just starting out in my career, and have been and remain fearful about speaking up,” Ms. O’Connor wrote. “But remaining silent is causing me great distress.”

In speaking out about her hotel episode, Ms. Judd said in a recent interview, “Women have been talking about Harvey amongst ourselves for a long time, and it’s simply beyond time to have the conversation publicly.”

Ms. Nestor, a law and business school student, accepted Mr. Weinstein’s breakfast invitation at the Peninsula because she did not want to miss an opportunity, she later told colleagues. After she arrived, he offered to help her career while boasting about a series of famous actresses he claimed to have slept with, according to accounts that colleagues compiled after hearing her story and then sent on to company executives.

“She said he was very persistent and focused though she kept saying no for over an hour,” one internal document said. Ms. Nestor, who declined to comment for this article, refused his bargain, the records noted. “She was disappointed that he met with her and did not seem to be interested in her résumé or skill set.” The young woman chose not to report the episode to human resources personnel, but the allegations came to management’s attention through other employees.

Across the years and continents, accounts of Mr. Weinstein’s conduct share a common narrative: Women reported to a hotel for what they thought were work reasons, only to discover that Mr. Weinstein, who has been married for most of three decades, sometimes seemed to have different interests. His home base was New York, but his rolling headquarters were luxury hotels: the Peninsula Beverly Hills and the Savoy in London, the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc near the Cannes Film Festival in France and the Stein Eriksen Lodge near the Sundance Film Festival.

Working for Mr. Weinstein could mean getting him out of bed in the morning and doing “turndown duty” late at night, preparing him for sleep. Like the colleague cited in Ms. O’Connor’s memo, some junior employees required to perform those tasks said they were disturbing.

In interviews, eight women described varying behavior by Mr. Weinstein: appearing nearly or fully naked in front of them, requiring them to be present while he bathed or repeatedly asking for a massage or initiating one himself. The women, typically in their early or middle 20s and hoping to get a toehold in the film industry, said he could switch course quickly — meetings and clipboards one moment, intimate comments the next. One woman advised a peer to wear a parka when summoned for duty as a layer of protection against unwelcome advances.

Laura Madden, a former employee who said Mr. Weinstein prodded her for massages at hotels in Dublin and London beginning in 1991, said he had a way of making anyone who objected feel like an outlier. “It was so manipulative,” she said in an interview. “You constantly question yourself — am I the one who is the problem?”

“I don’t know anything about that,” Mr. Weinstein said.

Most women who told The Times that they experienced misconduct by Mr. Weinstein had never met one another. They range in age from early 20s to late 40s and live in different cities. Some said they did not report the behavior because there were no witnesses and they feared retaliation by Mr. Weinstein. Others said they felt embarrassed. But most confided in co-workers.

Ms. Madden later told Karen Katz, a friend and colleague in the acquisitions department, about Mr. Weinstein’s overtures, including a time she locked herself in the bathroom of his hotel room, sobbing. “We were so young at the time,” said Ms. Katz, now a documentary filmmaker. “We did not understand how wrong it was or how Laura should deal with it.”

The news and stories that matter to Californians (and anyone else interested in the state), delivered weekday mornings.

Others in the London office said the same. “I was pretty disturbed and angry,” said Sallie Hodges, another former employee, recalling the accounts she heard from colleagues. “That’s kind of the way things were.”

The human resources operation was considered weak in New York and worse in London, so some employees banded together in solidarity. “If a female executive was asked to go to a meeting solo, she and a colleague would generally double up” so as not to be alone with Mr. Weinstein, recalled Mr. Gill, the former president of Miramax Los Angeles.

Many women who worked with Mr. Weinstein said they never experienced sexual harassment or knew of anyone who did, and recalled him as a boss who gave them valuable opportunities at young ages. Some described long and satisfying careers with him, praising him as a mentor and advocate.

But in interviews, some of the former employees who said they had troubling experiences with Mr. Weinstein asked a common question: How could allegations repeating the same pattern — young women, a powerful male producer, even some of the same hotels — have accumulated for almost three decades?

“It wasn’t a secret to the inner circle,” said Kathy DeClesis, Bob Weinstein’s assistant in the early 1990s. She supervised a young woman who left the company abruptly after an encounter with Harvey Weinstein and who later received a settlement, according to several former employees.

Speaking up could have been costly. A job with Mr. Weinstein was a privileged perch at the nexus of money, fame and art, and plenty of his former assistants have risen high in Hollywood. He could be charming and generous: gift baskets, flowers, personal or career help and cash. At the Cannes Film Festival, according to several former colleagues, he sometimes handed out thousands of dollars as impromptu bonuses.

Mr. Weinstein was a volcanic personality, though, given to fits of rage and personal lashings of male and female employees alike. When a female guest of his had to wait for a hotel room upgrade, he yelled that Ms. O’Connor would be better off marrying a “fat, rich Jewish” man because she was probably just good for “being a wife” and “making babies.” (He added some expletives, she wrote in her memo.) His treatment of women was sometimes written off as just another form of toxicity, according to multiple former employees.

In the fall of 1998, a 25-year-old London assistant named Zelda Perkins confronted Mr. Weinstein. According to former colleagues, she and several co-workers had been regularly subjected to inappropriate requests or comments in hotel rooms, and she was particularly concerned about the treatment of another woman in the office. She told Mr. Weinstein that he had to stop, according to the former colleagues, and that she would go public or initiate legal action unless he changed his behavior.

Steve Hutensky, one of Miramax’s entertainment lawyers, was dispatched to London to negotiate a settlement with Ms. Perkins and her lawyer. He declined to comment for this article.

Ms. Perkins, now a theater producer in London, also declined to comment for this article, saying that she could not discuss her work at Miramax or whether she had entered into any agreements.

Months after the settlement, Mr. Weinstein triumphed at the Oscars, with “Life Is Beautiful” and “Shakespeare in Love” winning 10 awards. A few years later, Mr. Weinstein, who had produced a series of British-themed movies, was made a Commander of the British Empire, an honorary title just short of knighthood.

For actors, a meeting with Mr. Weinstein could yield dazzling rewards: scripts, parts, award campaigns, magazine coverage, influence on lucrative endorsement deals. He knew how to blast small films to box office success, and deliver polished dramas like “The King’s Speech” and popular attractions like the “Scary Movie” franchise. Mr. Weinstein’s films helped define femininity, sex and romance, from Catherine Zeta-Jones in “Chicago” to Jennifer Lawrence in “Silver Linings Playbook.”

But movies were also his private leverage. When Mr. Weinstein invited Ms. Judd to breakfast in Beverly Hills, she had been shooting the thriller “Kiss the Girls” all night, but the meeting seemed too important to miss. After arriving at the hotel lobby, she was surprised to learn that they would be talking in his suite; she decided to order cereal, she said, so the food would come quickly and she could leave.

Mr. Weinstein soon issued invitation after invitation, she said. Could he give her a massage? When she refused, he suggested a shoulder rub. She rejected that too, she recalled. He steered her toward a closet, asking her to help pick out his clothing for the day, and then toward the bathroom. Would she watch him take a shower? she remembered him saying.

“I said no, a lot of ways, a lot of times, and he always came back at me with some new ask,” Ms. Judd said. “It was all this bargaining, this coercive bargaining.”

To get out of the room, she said, she quipped that if Mr. Weinstein wanted to touch her, she would first have to win an Oscar in one of his movies. She recalled feeling “panicky, trapped,” she said in the interview. “There’s a lot on the line, the cachet that came with Miramax.”

Not long afterward, she related what had happened to her mother, the singer Naomi Judd, who confirmed their conversation to a Times reporter. Years later, Ashley Judd appeared in two Weinstein films without incident, she said. In 2015, she shared an account of the episode in the hotel room with “Variety” without naming the man involved.

In 1997, Mr. Weinstein reached a previously undisclosed settlement with Rose McGowan, then a 23-year-old-actress, after an episode in a hotel room during the Sundance Film Festival. The $100,000 settlement was “not to be construed as an admission” by Mr. Weinstein, but intended to “avoid litigation and buy peace,” according to the legal document, which was reviewed by The Times. Ms. McGowan had just appeared in the slasher film “Scream” and would later star in the television show “Charmed.” She declined to comment.

Just months before Ms. O’Connor wrote her memo, a young female employee quit after complaining of being forced to arrange what she believed to be assignations for Mr. Weinstein, according to two people familiar with her departure. The woman, who asked not to be identified to protect her privacy, said a nondisclosure agreement prevented her from commenting.

Soon, complaints about Mr. Weinstein’s behavior prompted the board of his company to take notice.

In March 2015, Mr. Weinstein had invited Ambra Battilana, an Italian model and aspiring actress, to his TriBeCa office on a Friday evening to discuss her career. Within hours, she called the police. Ms. Battilana told them that Mr. Weinstein had grabbed her breasts after asking if they were real and put his hands up her skirt, the police report says.

The claims were taken up by the New York Police Department’s Special Victims Squad and splashed across the pages of tabloids, along with reports that the woman had worked with investigators to secretly record a confession from Mr. Weinstein. The Manhattan district attorney’s office later declined to bring charges.

But Mr. Weinstein made a payment to Ms. Battilana, according to people familiar with the settlement, speaking on the condition of anonymity about the confidential agreement.

The public nature of the episode concerned some executives and board members of the Weinstein Company. (Harvey and Bob Weinstein together own 42 percent of the privately held business.) When several board members pressed Mr. Weinstein about it, he insisted that the woman had set him up, colleagues recalled.

Ms. Battilina had testified in court proceedings against associates of former Prime Minister Berlusconi of Italy who are accused of procuring women for alleged sex parties, and the Italian news media also reported that, years ago Ms. Battilana accused a septuagenarian boyfriend of sexual harassment, a complaint that was apparently dismissed. Ms. Battilana did not respond to requests for comment. Her lawyer, Mauro Rufini, could not be reached for comment.

After the episode, Lance Maerov, a board member, said he successfully pushed for a code of behavior for the company that included detailed language about sexual harassment.

Then Ms. O’Connor’s memo hit, with page after page of detailed accusations. In describing the experiences of women at the company she had heard about, including her own, she wrote, “The balance of power is me: 0, Harvey Weinstein: 10.”

She was a valued employee — Mr. Weinstein described her as “fantastic,” “a great person,” “a brilliant executive” — so the complaint rattled top executives, including Bob Weinstein. When the board was notified of it by email, Mr. Maerov insisted that an outside lawyer determine whether the allegations were true, he said in an interview.

But the inquiry never happened. Mr. Weinstein had reached a settlement with Ms. O’Connor, she had withdrawn her complaint and there was no longer anything to investigate.

“Because this matter has been resolved and no further action is required, I withdraw my complaint,” Ms. O’Connor wrote in an email to the head of human resources six days after sending her memo. She also wrote a letter to Mr. Weinstein thanking him for the opportunity to learn about the entertainment industry.

Is Harvey the producer that Thandie has discussed in interviews for years now as the producer who filmed her when she was first starting out and then showed that video to his friends at parties for years? She's never named names as far as I know.

I wouldn't expect Harvey to be that modern. No way he'd film it and show people. He's far more traditional in his scummyness.

Getting naked and asking women to watch him shower when he look likes Tony Soprano is quite Roman of him. Razz

He'll probably just get put back on the Miramax board after a few months away. Harvey is one in a long line of producers exactly like him and they are powerful men with powerful friends.

Harvey Weinstein Scandal: Bombshell New Yorker Piece Alleges Mogul Raped Women
The New Yorker published a bombshell report on Harvey Weinstein on Tuesday, that alleges the embattled mogul raped three women, including actress Asia Argento.

The story, written by Ronan Farrow, claims Weinstein forcibly performed or received oral sex and also forced vaginal sex on women. It also contains on-the-record accounts from Mira Sorvino and Rosanna Arquette of encounters or business meetings with Weinstein that involved being propositioned sexually.

“I know he has crushed a lot of people before,” Argento said in the story. “That’s why this story—in my case, it’s twenty years old, some of them are older—has never come out.”

Sorvino, who won an Oscar appearing in “Mighty Aphrodite” for Miramax, Weinstein’s company, also told Farrow that Weinstein “harassed her” and pressured her to have a sexual relationship while she appeared in films for his company, Miramax. At the Toronto Film Festival in 1995, she claims he propositioned her, and later showed up weeks later at her apartment.

In Toronto, Sorvino said Weinstein “…started massaging my shoulders, which made me very uncomfortable, and then tried to get more physical, sort of chasing me around.” Arquette describes encountering a bathrobe-wearing Weinstein in his hotel room, where he tried to intimidate her into sexual contact.

Both Sorvino and Arquette claim that after they rejected Weinstein’s advances, their careers suffered.

Through a spokeswoman, Weinstein denied that he had assaulted women.

“Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein,” the statement reads. “Mr. Weinstein has further confirmed that there were never any acts of retaliation against any women for refusing his advances. Mr. Weinstein obviously can’t speak to anonymous allegations, but with respect to any women who have made allegations on the record, Mr. Weinstein believes that all of these relationships were consensual.”

In addition, the New Yorker piece also reports that four women experienced unwanted physical contact with Weinstein, that “could be classified as an assault.” Weinstein also allegedly exposed himself to women or masturbated in their presence.

The New Yorker story comes on the heels of a piece last week in the New York Times that detailed numerous instances of alleged harassment and financial settlements spanning multiple decades. Weinstein was fired from the Weinstein Company on Sunday. The indie studio behind “The King’s Speech” and “The Artist” will change its name as it tries to move forward from the scandal.

Farrow, an NBC correspondent, spent 10 months interviewing 13 women who reported they were harassed or assaulted by Weinstein between the 1990’s and now.

More to come…

Yeah I saw that Clooney and Kevin Smith are appalled and acting like they had no idea and how they're ashamed to have made movies at his company. I'm sure they're going to give that money back now right?

Every single time something like this happens I have such mixed emotions because on the one hand it is truly awful and there is never any excuse for rape but on the other, I'm tired of hearing about decades of allegations and dozens of women who either took pay offs or just stayed quiet out of shame and in the meantime the perp is allowed to spend the rest of their life raping and abusing because of fear of career backlash.

At what point is being raped and then not preventing others from also being raped more important than your career? Guys like Cosby and Harvey were allowed to get away with their crimes purely because of profit.

Both Affleck and Damon and Michael Eisner are also condemning Harvey but Rose McGowan ain't havin none of it and she's calling all of em out on her twitter, she straight up told Affleck to Fuck Off and she's also called out Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos for funding his shows. Rose is off the leash and going for every throat she can today.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Heather Graham are now sharing their stories of Harvey's harassment too....

This has been heating up lately. This many actresses speaking against him? Glad he's fired. This is good though, hopefully this brings a needed change to how women are treated.

It really bothers me that he thinks because he's rich he can get away with it. He's got a really punchable face.

The more details come to light and I'm reminded of the "Golden Era" of Hollywood when the studio heads were total sexual deviants who drugged and abused their starlets for years, even the underage ones like Judy Garland.

I want to know, who did Harvey piss off in Hollywood?

Because all this spilling out like a damn has burst, very suspect.

Oh and Hilarie Burton revealed that Affleck groped her back in 2003.

When she was a host on TRL.

Women are coming forward by the hour. Some were paid for their silence, right? Can they still speak out if they accepted the money and signed a NDA or something?

I seriously think it's time for impeachment. It's come to a point where even his supporters are losing faith now, poor souls. Today he said wants to shut down NBC and for reporting "fake news."

I think it's time for a CIA intervention, Kennedy style. Although considering his spawn are also irredeemable poison stock I would prefer something more along the lines of the fall of the House of Romanov. But I will settle for the Gaddafi exit or the rope given that he is a treasonous fucking snake and should hang as one. But hey, I'm also almost definitely a sociopath so your impeachment option is also one way to go.

Will The Academy’s Weinstein Meeting Be Haunted By Darryl Zanuck’s Ghost?
The Predators Thread Ap_50110
At the Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday, the most telling books on Darryl F. Zanuck – The Zanucks of Hollywood: The Dark Legacy of a Hollywood Dynasty by Marlys Harris, and Zanuck: The Rise and Fall of Hollywood’s Last Tycoon by Leonard Mosley, for instance – were listed as being “in use” somewhere in the Academy.

Whether the group is planning a tribute or a reckoning is hard to say. But someone is taking a close look at a long-deceased producer and executive who may be giving the Academy governors heartburn as they prepare for a hastily convened Saturday meeting to review the Harvey Weinstein sex abuse claims.

Zanuck, who was mostly associated with 20th Century Fox before his death in 1979, was also closely tied to the Academy. Three times, he won its Thalberg award for achievement in producing, including the inaugural award, in 1937. He was never president of the group, but he served on its governing board. And over time, he became a benefactor. The Herrick, a research library, has at least three collections of Zanuck papers and memorabilia – a trove that could prove invaluable as curators begin devising shows and exhibits for the (eternally) under-construction movie museum.

But Zanuck, who was in and out of Fox several times through the decades, also carried baggage that will make Saturday’s examination of Weinstein’s membership an extraordinary test for the Academy. To be blunt, Zanuck, as a studio chief and otherwise, abused women in a way that makes Harvey Weinstein – even if all the many accusations prove true – look like a piker.

Over at the Beverly Hills public library on Friday, Harris’s Dark Legacy book was still on the shelf. In it, any interested reader could learn that Zanuck – governor, benefactor, three-time recipient of a lifetime achievement award – went through contract actresses like tissue paper. “He was not serious about any of the women,” wrote Harris. “To him they were merely pleasurable breaks in the day – like polo, lunch, and practical jokes.”

Actresses were routinely summoned to a small part of his large, green-paneled office suite, in which he kept the casting couch. This was hardly a secret. As Harris wrote: “Anyone at the studio knew of the afternoon trysts.” Gossips said the studio shut down for a half-hour at 4 p.m. every day, while Zanuck had his way.

In the early 1980s, a Fox rep, conducting a private tour of the studio’s Century City lot, matter-of-factly described subterranean passages which, he said, were used by actresses who didn’t want to be seen on their sex trips to and from Zanuck’s office. The Underground Railroad, this was not. In fact, Zanuck’s record of harassment leaves something of a Confederate monuments problem at Fox today: Can anyone offended by Weinstein’s behavior feel entirely comfortable in Fox’s beautifully appointed Darryl F. Zanuck Theater? Or should it perhaps be renamed for an executive or producer who treated women better?

As for the Academy, it will be fascinating to see how the governors – fresh off the #Oscarssowhite controversy – handle the history problem. Will they ignore the long record of abuse by Academy-connected players like Zanuck? Or will they dive in, perhaps making sexual misbehavior this Oscar season’s dominant theme?

It started before Zanuck too, you should look into the the history of MGM and it's co-founder Louis B Mayer who was all about developing child stars that he could abuse.

People are so shocked and appalled now because they like to pretend this just doesn't happen but as long as there has been a hollywood, there have been producers, directors and studio heads have always been abusing actresses because they could. There is absolutely nothing pretty about the history of this industry.

Judy died from the exact same drugs that Louis B Mayer force fed her when she was 15 when he had her on a steady diet of cigarettes, soup and barbiturates.

Tell me if you'll ever trust that actors and actresses earned their jobs on merit alone after reading through this. The casting couch has been around since the first studio opened
.

  • The legend of the Hollywood casting couch coincided with the rise of the studio system in the 1910s. Many moguls were rumoured to have been enthusiastic practitioners and it has been claimed that many actresses attempted, with varying degrees of success, to attain stardom via this route.[2]
  • In her memoir Past Imperfect: An Autobiography (1978), actress Joan Collins described her experience of the casting-couch behaviour of two 20th Century Fox execs in the 1950s.
  • Since 1988, Theresa Russell has alleged in multiple interviews that she was propositioned by legendary producer Sam Spiegel during her first casting session for The Last Tycoon.[3][4] According to his biographer, Spiegel had previously made liberal use of the casting couch during the making of The Chase (1966).[5]
  • In her memoir Child Star (1988), actress Shirley Temple claimed that one producer exposed himself to her in 1940 when she was 12.
  • In her book You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again (1991), Oscar-winning producer Julia Phillips attempted to expose many of the underground Hollywood institutions and confirmed that a "casting couch" mentality was alive and well in Hollywood.
  • In a 1995 article, journalist Peter Keough described Hollywood as "a town where everyone is selling body and soul for fame and fortune and all – especially women – are considered commodities".[6]
  • In a 1996 interview, actor Woody Harrelson declared "every [acting] business I ever entered into in New York seemed to have a casting couch ... I've seen so many people sleep with people they loathe in order to further their ambition."[7]
  • In 2003, Italian actress Asia Argento stated that Hollywood producers expect oral sex from young starlets in exchange for roles.[8] Her semi-autobiographical film Scarlet Diva (2000) features a scene along these lines with painter Joe Coleman playing a lecherous producer inspired, as revealed in October 2017, by Argento's alleged experience with Harvey Weinstein.
  • Robert Hofler's book The Man Who Invented Rock Hudson (2005) alleged that Hollywood agent Henry Willson was a gay casting-couch predator.[9]
  • In her 2005 autobiography, actress Goldie Hawn stated that cartoonist Al Capp sexually propositioned her on a casting couch and exposed himself to her when she was nineteen years old. When she refused his advances, Capp became angry and told her that she was "never gonna make anything in your life" and that she should "go and marry a Jewish dentist. You'll never get anywhere in this business."[10][11]
  • At a 2005 class reunion, producer Chris Hanley told his former classmates that "almost every leading actress in all of [his] 24 films has slept with a director or producer or a leading actor to get the part that launched her career".[12]
  • In her autobiography Ich habe ja gewusst, dass ich fliegen kann (2006), Austrian actress Senta Berger (b. 1941) claimed that in a New York hotel suite in 1965 a producer (b. 1902) exposed himself to her beneath his silk dressing gown and offered to forgive her for the atrocities of the Nazis if she slept with him.
  • In 2006, a New York City producer was accused of sexually harassing several members of the cast of the off-Broadway play Dog Sees God.[13]
  • In 2007, an article in Vanity Fair denounced former manager of boy bands the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync, Lou Pearlman (who was arrested for financial related crimes such as money laundering) for improper casting couch-behavior.[14]
  • In 2009, Hollywood composer Joseph Brooks was arrested on charges of raping or sexually assaulting eleven women between 2005 and 2008, allegedly having lured them to his apartment to audition for movie roles. Brooks committed suicide in 2011 before the case came to trial.[15]
  • In 2009, Megan Fox stated that leading film directors made sexual propositions while casting for film roles.[16]
  • In a 2009 interview with OK! Magazine, actress Charlize Theron claimed that when she was 18 she was propositioned at an audition by a pajama-clad Hollywood director.[17] "I thought it was a little odd that the audition was on a Saturday night at his house in Los Angeles, but I thought maybe that was normal."[18]
  • In a 2009 interview, actor Mickey Rourke declared: "There's definitely something called a casting couch... if you take a girl from the Midwest with a pretty face and instead of inviting them in for an audition in the morning, the directors invite them for dinner at night? ... I can recall with certain women, we'd go out, I'd park the car on Sunset and by the time I'd got to the curb there'd be three or four producers handing them cards. ... There's ways you get a job and ways you get a job."[19]
  • In a 2010 interview with Elle magazine, Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that early in her career a film executive suggested that a business meeting should finish "in the bedroom".[20]
  • In April 2010, actor Ryan Phillippe admitted on the Howard Stern Show that he had had to flee a "creepy" casting-couch session when he was 18 or 19.[21]
  • In a 2010 interview with Access Hollywood, actress Lisa Rinna said a producer had asked her for "a quickie" when she was a 24-year-old candidate for a role on a prominent television series.[22] At the same interview, Rinna's husband Harry Hamlin claimed that a female casting director attempted to seduce him in the late 1970s when he was 27.[23][24]
  • In 2011, Corey Feldman alleged that children were also victims of the casting couch.[25] Paul Petersen said that some of the culprits are "still in the game" and Alison Arngrim claimed that Feldman and Corey Haim were given drugs and "passed around" in the 1980s.[26]
  • In the November 2012 issue of Elle, Susan Sarandon spoke of a "really disgusting" casting-couch experience in New York City in the late 1960s or early 1970s. "I just went into a room and a guy practically threw me on the desk. It was my early days in New York and it was really disgusting. It wasn't like I gave it a second thought. It was so badly done."[27][28]
  • Amy Berg's documentary An Open Secret (2014) followed the stories of five former child actors whose lives were turned upside down by multiple predators, including the convicted sex offenders Marc Collins-Rector, Brian Peck, Marty Weiss and Bob Villard.[29]
  • In July 2016, television executive Roger Ailes was accused of sexual harassment by former Fox News Channel anchor Gretchen Carlson. More than twenty other women, including Megyn Kelly and Andrea Tantaros, have since come forward with similar allegations about Ailes' predatory casting couch-like behavior in the television industry over a 50-year period.[30]
  • In October 2016, Cher posted on Twitter that she had had a “scary experience” with an unnamed and now deceased "gross" rich, important film producer at his house. She stated that she walked out and they never spoke again because "no job is worth that".[31]
  • Also in October 2016, Rose McGowan tweeted that she had been raped by a studio head who then bought the distribution rights to one of her films. She was then shamed while her rapist was adulated despite the rape being an open secret in Hollywood.[32] A year later, the studio head McGowan accused was revealed to have been Harvey Weinstein.
  • On 1 November 2016, defence lawyers for Bill Cosby, who has been accused of sexual assault by over 60 women, wrote that, "Even if proven (and it could not be), the age-old 'casting couch' is not unique to Mr. Cosby, and thus not a 'signature' nor a basis for the admissibility of these witnesses' stories, let alone a conviction."[33]
  • In March 2017, actress Jane Fonda claimed: "I've been fired because I wouldn't sleep with my boss".[34]
  • In June 2017, Alison Brie claimed she was asked to take her top off during an Entourage audition[35] and Emmy Rossum alleged she was asked to visit a film director's office in a bikini.[36]
  • In July 2017, actress Zoe Kazan stated: "I had a producer ask me on set once if I spat or swallowed".[37]
  • On 5 October 2017, a New York Times article accused Oscar-winning film producer and mogul Harvey Weinstein of three decades of sexual harassment of and paying off settlements to actresses Ashley Judd (in 1996) and Rose McGowan (in 1997), Filipina-Italian model Ambra Battilana Gutierrez (in 2015) and several named and unnamed female Miramax and Weinstein Company production assistants, temps and other employees.[38] Weinstein promptly issued an apology for his past behavior and denied some of the allegations[39] before being fired by the board of his own company.[40] Shortly thereafter, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Judith Godrèche,[41] Heather Graham,[42] Cara Delevingne,[43] Léa Seydoux,[44] Kate Beckinsale[45] and many others spoke out about their experiences of being sexually harassed by Weinstein.
  • In the immediate aftermath of the Weinstein scandal in October 2017, actor Terry Crews tweeted that a "high-level Hollywood executive" had groped his genitals at an industry event in 2016,[46] actor Rob Schneider spoke of a "gross" hotel-room encounter before he was famous with a famous, now-deceased director[47] and actor James Van Der Beek tweeted about sexual harassment by "older, powerful men" in Hollywood.[48]

Trump Accuser Demands Release Of Documents On All His Sexual Assault Allegations
A woman who accused President Donald Trump  of unwanted groping has subpoenaed all documents held by his presidential campaign about any harassment and assault allegations against him, BuzzFeed News reported Saturday.

Summer Zervos, a former contestant on “The Apprentice” and one of many women who came forward during the campaign to accuse Trump of harassment or assault, initiated the subpoena as part of her lawsuit against the president for defamation. Zervos decided to sue Trump in January months after the then-presidential candidate denied the allegation and dismissed all of his accusers as liars.

In her bid to establish that Trump “defamed” her, Zervos’s subpoena aims to prove how Trump deliberately tried to discredit her and the other accusers.

The subpoena, which is liable to renew public attention on the numerous allegations against Trump, sets the stage for another legal and political headache for the president.

Zervos’ subpoena requires him to turn over all documents “concerning any accusations that were made during Donald J. Trump’s election campaign for president, that he subjected any woman to unwanted sexual touching and/or sexually inappropriate behavior.” The order would cover documents about Zervos, as well as other women who accused Trump of groping, including, but not limited to, Jessica Leeds, Mindy McGillivray, Rachel Crooks, Natasha Stoynoff, Temple Taggart, Kristin Anderson, Cathy Heller, Jill Harth, and Jessica Drake.

Zervos’ legal team, which includes nationally renowned women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred, issued the subpoena in March, but it only entered the court record in September.

Trump’s attorneys tried to get the suit dismissed in March on the grounds that the president is immune from being sued while in office. They also tried to dismiss the subpoena in July, arguing that it “seeks wholly irrelevant information intended solely to harass the president.”

During Trump’s campaign, he vowed to sue the women who accused him of assault and harassment, but he has not followed through on the promise.

Summer Zervos, a former contestant on “The Apprentice,” is suing President Donald Trump for defamation after he denied groping her without consent.

The subpoena comes to light at a moment of heightened public sensitivity to the impunity given to many powerful men allowing them to sexually harass and assault women. Famed Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was fired by the company he founded and expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences after the New York Times reported earlier this month that Weinstein had settled numerous accusations of sexual harassment out of court. The report prompted a flood of additional allegations against Weinstein, including claims that he physically assaulted women and forced them to perform sex acts.

The allegations against Weinstein bear an eerie resemblance to the accounts of many Trump accusers.

At least 16 women have publicly accused Trump of forcibly attempting to kiss, grope and have sex with them. Many of those women came forward in October 2016 following the leaked 2005 video of Trump bragging to “Access Hollywood” host Billy Bush that he freely touches women without their consent, infamously stating that he can “grab them by the pussy.”

Zervos said that in 2007 Trump summoned her to meet about professional matters on several occasions and then kissed, groped and humped her against her will.

Annabella Sciorra Accuses Harvey Weinstein Of Rape, Daryl Hannah Shares Her Story
The Predators Thread Annabe10
Actresses Annabella Sciorra and Daryl Hannah are the latest to come forward with harrowing accounts of their encounters with disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein.

In a story in The New Yorker, Sciorra recounts how Weinstein violently raped her in the 1990s, and then sexually harassed her over the next several years.

Weinstein gave Sciorra a ride home one night, after she had filmed The Night We Never Met, which he’d produced. In an story similar to other to other women who had accused Weinstein of sexual assault, she said there was a knock on her door and, when she opened the door, Weinstein burst into the apartment and started to unbutton his shirt.

“He shoved me onto the bed, and he got on top of me,” she said adding that she “kicked and I yelled” but couldn’t fight him off.
“When he was done, he ejaculated on my leg, and on my nightgown. He said, ‘I have impeccable timing.”’

But the ordeal was not over, as Weinstein attempted to perform oral sex on her, Sciorra said, adding that only when she began to shake violently, he left.

“I was definitely embarrassed by it,” Sciorra said of the incident. “I felt disgusting. I felt like I had f**ked up.”

Years later, there was more pounding on her hotel doors by Weinstein and he walked in on her again in his underwear once but, luckily she wasn’t alone.

Daryl Hannah also spoke of Weinstein banging on her hotel room, making her flee using a back door. He also walked into her bedroom, using a spare key but left when found her watching a movie with her makeup artist. He later asked to touch or see her breasts. “I said, F**k off, Harvey,'” she said,

Both actresses, who join some 60 women who have come forward so far with accusations of sexual assault and sexual harassment against Weinstein, claim that he had retaliated after they had rebuffed his advances by sabotaging their careers.

Harvey always seemed like a piece of shit but I never imagined he was assaulting and raping every young actress who ever worked at his studio.

I'm surprised more guys aren't being outed.

When is Ratner's turn??? Olivia Munn outed him for the same shit as Harvey years ago.

And Bryan Singer must have a parade of young boys who could testify against him by now.

Brett Ratner Accused Of Sexual Harassment & Misconduct By Natasha Henstridge, Five Other Women
The Predators Thread 120010
Producer and director Brett Ratner is the latest Hollywood powerhouse to be accused of sexual harassment and misconduct. The Los Angeles Times has posted an article today with allegations from six woman accusing the Tower Heist director, including accusations from actress Natasha Henstridge.

Ratner, through his attorney Martin Singer, disputed her account to the Times.

The lengthy story begins with Henstridge’s allegation: She was a 19-year-old fashion model and he a music video director in his 20s when, after a small party of friends at his New York apartment, Ratner prevented Henstridge from leaving, forcing Henstridge to perform oral sex on him.

“He strong-armed me in a real way,” the Species actress says in the Times article. “He physically forced himself on me. At some point, I gave in and he did his thing.”

The Times article details “a range of sexual harassment and misconduct that allegedly took place in private homes, on movie sets or at industry events. As is often the case, none of the women reported the allegations to the police.”

In a 10-page letter responding to the Times, Singer told the paper, “I have represented Mr. Ratner for two decades, and no woman has ever made a claim against him for sexual misconduct or sexual harassment. Furthermore, no woman has ever requested or received any financial settlement from my client.”

Actress Olivia Munn wrote about an incident involving Ratner – she didn’t use his name – in a 2010 memoir, writing that in 2004 while visiting the set of the director’s After the Sunset, Munn delivered a meal to his trailer and the director masturbated in front of her. A year later, on a TV show, Ratner “claimed that he had ‘banged’ her,” the Times writes, “something he later said was not true.” At a Creative Artists Agency party he “boasted of ejaculating on magazine covers featuring her image.”

In addition to Munn and Henstridge, other women quoted in the Times article today are:

The Punisher actress Jaime Ray Newman, who was on the same Air Canada flight as Ratner in 2005, during which  the director swapped seats so he could sit next to her, then “began loudly describing sex acts he wanted to perform on her in explicit detail. He also showed her nude photos of his then-girlfriend.”

Actress Katharine Towne, who describes a 2005 encounter with Ratner. At an L.A.  party, The What Lies Beneath actress says that at an L.A. party Ratner made “extreme” advances before following Towne into a bathroom. In an attempt to put the director off, Towne gave him her phone number. “Ratner’s assistant called her for the next six months, unsuccessfully trying to arrange a dinner for her and the filmmaker, she said.”

Eri Sasaki, was at 21 was a part-time model and aspiring singer when she appeared as an extra in a scene in Rather’s Rush Hour 2. Dressed in a “skimpy outfit” that exposed her midriff, Sasaki was waiting for filming to begin when Ratner “approached her, ran his index finger down her bare stomach and asked if she wanted to go into a bathroom with him. When she said no, she recalled Ratner saying, ‘Don’t you want to be famous?'”

Jorina King, who also worked as a Rush Hour 2 background actress, says Ratner first discussed the possibility of a speaking part, then arrived in her trailer “and told her he needed to see her breasts. King said she rejected his request and hid in a restroom. ‘I figured if I could stay out of his eyesight, if I could stay away from him, he will forget about me and he will choose someone else, and that is exactly what happened.'”

It's been three years since Cosby was accused by 60 women and how far have we gotten? A mistrial because the Jury was deadlocked and he gets a retrial next Spring. There is no justice in rape cases, seems it's just public shaming on both sides.

I don't believe much will come of this for any of the accused, especially when the Official White House response to the Preisdent's own 16 accusers is that they are all liars.

Can we really expect celebrities to be judged as criminals when the President doesn't even see it as a crime and declares everything as fake news?

These rapists may resign and suffer a loss of future income but they keep their fortunes and that's about it for punishment.
