The Joker (Joaquin Phoenix in Talks)

Warner Bros and DC are in the early stages of another Batman Universe spinoff movie, this one telling the origin story of the signature villain The Joker. The studio has set The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips to co-write a script with 8 Mile scribe Scott Silver. Phillips will direct the movie, and Martin Scorsese will produce it with Phillips. This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters.

I’m told that the intention is to make an origin story that isn’t part of any other iteration. The Joker has memorably been part of two Batman movies in the form of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, and was most recently played by Jared Leto in the first Suicide Squad film. He will reprise in the Suicide Squad sequel and the Harley Quinn spinoff, but this new film will launch the character with a different actor, possibly younger.

An intriguing part is the setting. The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.
I’m told that Phillips and Silver are writing already, but there is nothing firm on where this will fit into the DC schedule.

Phillips most recently directed War Dogs with Jonah Hill and Miles Teller. Silver’s recent script credits include The Fighter.

Warner Bros. Is Planning Second DC Movie Universe Not Tied to DCEU
Yesterday brought the rather unexpected news that Warner Bros. is currently developing a Joker origin story movie with Martin Scorsese producing and Todd Phillips directing. One of the most interesting parts of the report, beyond the fact that Scorsese is making a Joker movie, is that it won't be Jared Leto's version of The Joker featured in the movie. That's because Warner Bros. is looking to start an entirely new DC production banner that will take place outside of the DC Extended Universe.

In Deadline's initial report about the Joker movie, they noted that it is being done under a new, as of yet unnamed production banner at Warner Bros. The hope is that they can use this banner to make unique movies outside of the DCEU that will use different actors and tell stories that otherwise couldn't happen in their current cinematic universe. Here's how Deadline explains it.

"This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters."

Depending on how this shakes out, this could either be a brilliant move, or it could lead to some serious oversaturation with DC comic book movies. In the report, the Joker origin movie is described as a "gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-'80s Gotham City," and that this version of The Joker won't be related to "any other iteration." Within the confines of a cinematic universe, something like that could never happen. Under this new production banner, Warner Bros. could do just about anything with the understanding that it wouldn't affect any of the big picture stuff. As such, it is said in this report that Leto is still expected to be in Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens.

This isn't the first we've heard of a possible project taking place outside of the DCEU. It was recently revealed that Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts had pitched a Superman: Red Son movie at one point. Under this new banner, something like that would actually be possible. There could also be adaptations of other very popular DC Comics storylines that couldn't happen in the current universe, like Gotham by Gaslight or Kingdom Come. It certainly does open up a lot of possibilities.

As of right now, there is no word on what this production banner is going to be called or how many of these movies Warner Bros. is planning on producing. They may want to test the waters with this Joker Origin Movie first and see how things go. The script is currently being written by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver (8 Mile), but there is no timetable for release. As much as cinematic universes are great, having to make movies fit within that continuity can be constricting. This is a pretty creative way of possibly being able to have it both ways.

Problem is they won't flop. They might not touch their desired $ Billion barrier, but China guarantees they will always surpass their budget and media buy.

Joker-Harley Quinn Movie in the Works With Jared Leto, Margot Robbie

Warner Bros. is developing an untitled tentpole movie starring Jared Leto as the Joker and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who direct and exec produce NBC’s “This Is Us,” are in final negotiations to direct the villain movie as part of the expanding DC Entertainment universe.

Leto and Robbie will reprise the roles they played in the studio’s 2016 super-villain mash-up “Suicide Squad.” The studio has not unveiled any logline other than a “criminal love story.”

And the Joker-Harley Quinn project is separate from Warner’s recently unveiled standalone Joker origin movie being developed as a potential directing vehicle for Todd Phillips of “The Hangover” — which will not star Leto.

Ficarra and Requa directed Robbie and Will Smith in the 2015 heist movie “Focus.” Their other big-screen credits include “I Love You Phillip Morris,” “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.”

Warner Bros. has been attempting to take advantage of Leto and Robbie — the two most popular stars of “Suicide Squad,” which received underwhelming reviews.  The film, directed by David Ayer, was a solid box office hit, grossing $745 million worldwide and the studio subsequently announced that it was working on a “Suicide Squad” sequel.

WB revealed in December that Robbie and Ayer were re-teaming on the female DC villains movie “Gotham City Sirens,” based on a comic series launched by DC in 2009 with the Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy. The new Joker-Harley Quinn project appears to have superseded “Gotham City Sirens” at this point.

Warner Bros. has been attempting to exploit the DC characters above and beyond its mainstay Batman and Superman characters to compete effectively against the ongoing success of the Disney-Marvel tentpoles. It succeeded this summer with the impressive performance of “Wonder Woman” as the fourth installment in the studio’s DC Extended Universe, which launched with 2013’s “Man of Steel,” followed by last year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad.”

Its next entry will come on Nov. 17 with “Justice League,” which will feature Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash and Ray Fisher as The Cyborg with Zack Snyder directing. The sixth entry is the “Aquaman” standalone movie, starring Momoa with James Wan directing. That movie, which began shooting in May in Australia, is set for a Dec. 21, 2018, launch.

“Wonder Woman 2” is the only other movie in the DC Extended Universe that’s been given a release date — Dec. 13, 2019.

Robbie’s Tonya Harding biopic “I, Tonya” will premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival.

John Requa & Glenn Ficarra Circling Margot Robbie Harley Quinn Spinoff Movie
Busy week for news in Gotham City. John Requa & Glenn Ficarra are in talks to write, direct and produce the Suicide Squad spinoff movie that is will have Margot Robbie and Jared Leto reprising their roles, she playing Harley Quinn and he playing her demented boyfriend The Joker. This comes a day after Deadline revealed that Warner Bros/DC have Todd Phillips writing with Scott Silver and producing with Martin Scorsese a new origin story about The Joker, a film that will cast a different actor in the signature villain role. DC has been all over the place with possible movies, and this one is apparently different from Gotham City Sirens, a different Harley Quinn spinoff meant to showcase several top female villains from the DC stable which Suicide Squad director David Ayer is attached to direct. Robbie is aboard that project as exec producer. This comes as the film she produced, I, Tonya, in which she plays disgraced Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding, is shaping up to be arguably the most coveted acquisitions title of the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. Her portrayal as Harley Quinn was a major bright spot in Suicide Squad,  as a nurse who loses her soul after falling for the charms of her Joker boyfriend.

The new movie focuses on that toxic relationship. While Suicide Squad brought about fanboy ire, the movie grossed nearly $750 million worldwide. Warner Bros/DC are developing a Suicide Squad sequel (Jaume Collet-Serra was going to direct it until he moved on to the Dwayne Johnson-starrer Jungle Cruise at Disney), and that is a high priority for Warner Bros and DC.

Requa and Ficarra wrote Bad Santa, but their directing efforts have been mostly financial misses. Most recently they directed Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, and before that, they directed Focus, another movie that wasn’t a success but which got them to work with Robbie. They also helmed Crazy, Stupid, Love. They wrote Cats and Dogs and its sequel. This ought to give them an opportunity to score a hit movie as Warner Bros and DC continue to try and figure out their superhero universe plans.

I'm very disappointed there are no proper origin films. I think we need to reboot (almost**) everything and start from scratch so we can really flesh out all the intricacies of each character.

**: Don't reboot Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds. That one was pretty good.

Turns out the WB has opted to scrap the Gotham City Sirens and have made the Joker/Harley movie it's replacement and priority..... Mad

TWD's Stephen Ogg has thrown his name in the ring for Scorsese's Joker. LOL, now that would be an insane choice.....

Scorsese has been talkin to his favorite boy Leo about taking on the role of The Joker.

What are your thoughts on Dicaprio as The Joker? I can't help but immediately make the Nicholson connection because of The Departed.

I drew that immediate connection, and not because of Departed, but because they look alike. Same face type. I wouldn't be surprised if a DNA test revealed Jack was his dad.

Also, as disinterested as i am in watching a solo Joker movie, I'll be less interested if it's Leo.

I'd be far more interested if all this attention were going to Harley Quinn but suddenly everybody wants more Joker like he's the latest craze after Suicide Squad gave us the worst Joker ever? Logic is dead.

I think Walton Goggins would be amazing as The Joker but they are apparently chasing Statues with this one cause Leo doesn't make a movie without gold attached.

I hate how they're using a different actor within the same universe but Leo would be amazing. I will accept this and ONLY this. But I think Leo will turn it down. He's not into the superhero genre I think otherwise he would've signed on a long time ago. This is a villain role so I guess it might interest him but I doubt it.

Yeah, you're right. The whole thing is just a mess. They're basically starting another universe because they know they fucked up with BvS. No undoing that one. lol And I'm sure a Joker movie can work without Batman but nobody would care. People love Batman as overused as he is. If Bruce/Batman is in the movie then I'm guessing it won't be Affleck either.

Leo Dicaprio doesn't need to play a superhero on screen cause he's Bruce Wayne in his everyday life. That man's history with the ladies over the last 20 years, he's a fucking legend. He's got no time for face paint cause he's too busy meeting women while playing a philanthropist. And yet, he can't grow a real man's beard....

Joaquin Phoenix in Talks to Play the Joker in Todd Phillips’ Standalone Movie
Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play the Clown Prince of Crime in Warner Bros. and Todd Phillips’ untitled Joker origin movie.

While studio negotiations are not yet underway, Phillips has made it clear that Phoenix is the top choice to star and sources now tell Variety that, after thinking it over, Phoenix has agreed to the role. WB had no comment.

Phillips is on board to co-write and direct the movie. Phillips had met with Phoenix before the new year and was just waiting for the studio’s go-ahead, sources say.

Insiders stress that Jared Leto, who starred in “Suicide Squad” as the Joker is still on board as the character in the DC universe and that this Phoenix has no effect on what happens with Leto’s character in future DC films.

The movie would fall under a yet-to-be-announced new banner of DC Comics, which would give the studio the opportunity to expand the canon of the iconic comic-book characters with unique story angles that aren’t included in its current cinematic universe. Jared Leto most recently played the Joker in “Suicide Squad” and is likely to reprise that role in “Suicide Squad 2,” but will not be featured in this film. Rumors circulated that Leonardo DiCaprio was the first person approached to star in Phillips’ standalone film, though that didn’t pan out.

Scott Silver will join Phillips as a co-writer on the film, which will delve into what it took for the Joker to become a mastermind criminal. Sources say the story will take place in the ’80s and have more of the look of a gritty crime drama than comic-book movie.

Phoenix has been considered for another villainous DC role in the past: Lex Luthor in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” but passed on that role, which ultimately went to Jesse Eisenberg. He was also in talks for Disney-Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” but passed on that as well. He was most recently seen in the Gus Van Sant film “He Won’t Get Far on Foot.”

Joaquin could have made a great Lex Luthor but instead we got Jesse Eisenberg. That choice was unacceptable then and is even more so now but by this point I have less than zero interest about any superhero movies coming out. There's still just too much of it and I feel like I'm done with comic movies for quite some time.

Well I am anxiously awaiting the release of a proper Gordon film series like "Police Academy: High School Hall Monitor" which is the prequel to your film "Police Academy: Cadet in Training" and of course the trilogy would inevitably be concluded with "Police Academy: Under Siege At Graduation". I really don't understand what DC (or whoever the hell is behind this crap) is doing.

The Marvel films make sense. They are mostly all in the same universe now. It all ties together and makes sense.

But DC is rebooting shit, making movies which aren't connected (like this one), and releasing films years after announcing them.

I love DC comics more than Marvel but film-wise, fuck DC. Marvel may not make the best movies but at least they have a decent formula and appear to know what they are doing.

Yep.

The only DC property I give any shit about is Birds of Prey, and I'm pretty sure I'll be dead before they figure that shit out.

I would love for them to adapt Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing too, but that wold be a ballsy effort, and definitely need a TV series and not a movie.
