Universal has dated “Bride of Frankenstein” for Feb. 14, 2019, with Bill Condon on board to direct.

The pic is the studio’s second entry in its newly announced “Dark Universe,” which kicks off with “The Mummy” — Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella — on June 9.

The studio has also announced a logo for the new initiative (pictured above). A musical theme for “Dark Universe” composed by Danny Elfman and will debut in theaters preceding “The Mummy.”

The enterprise is relaunching Universal’s iconic characters into modern cinema. While “The Mummy” and “Bride of Frankenstein” are the only two films in the initiative to be dated, the studio is currently developing “The Invisible Man” with Johnny Depp set to star, and a “Frankenstein” film with Javier Bardem on board to play the classic monster. “Van Helsing” and “Creature From the Black Lagoon” films are also planned.

“Dark Universe” was begun by core creatives Alex Kurtzman, who serves as director and producer of “The Mummy,” and “The Mummy” producer Chris Morgan. Also joining the enterprise to inspire and entertain a new generation are such talents as Oscar winner Christopher McQuarrie and David Koepp.

As for “The Bride of Frankenstein,”Angelina Jolie had been linked to the project for some time but insiders say scheduling will play a factor on her starring in the pic’s title role.

“I’m very excited to bring a new Bride of Frankenstein to life on screen, particularly since James Whale’s original creation is still so potent,” stated Condon. “The Bride of Frankenstein remains the most iconic female monster in film history, and that’s a testament to Whale’s masterpiece—which endures as one of the greatest movies ever made.”

Good God no.

This whole universe is going to tank.

They need to piss off these gigantic budget and big movie star ideas, and create a low budget universe. Think of all these low budget Blumhouse horror flicks - cheap, and generally make a shit-tonne of money (relative to their budgets). That's what they need to do with this "Dark Universe".

They're going to The Mummy all of them and turn them into stupid action blockbusters, when the content doesn't suit it. They could easily make cheap horror flicks with these old-timey horror characters - characters which will have limited appeal to a modern audience via generic summer blockbuster. They need to bring the scares.

Universal absolutely should have been a low budget Blum style HORROR franchise but all studios wants are action franchises now. Look at the Resident Evil reboot, it's being done as an action franchise again. It's like they have no concept of their own ideas, there is a reason that after 80 years the original universal horror films are still classics and these new films will be forgotten after opening weekend. To much focus on crossover and explosions, two things that have very little interest to me.

‘Bride Of Frankenstein’ Postponed; Javier Bardem & Angelina Jolie Expected To Wait
EXCLUSIVE:Universal Pictures is pressing pause on Bride of Frankenstein, the Bill Condon-directed remake of the 1935 horror classic. Pre-production had gotten underway in London for a February 1 production start, but the crew has just been told to go home for the time being. Javier Bardem has been in talks to play Frankenstein’s Monster, and Angelina Jolie has been in talks to play his reanimated, reluctant mate in the second film in Universal’s Dark Universe initiative to bring back its classic movie monsters. I’ve heard the film is going back to the lab to do some more work on the script and that is why they stopped the clock. It had been dated February 14, 2019.

The studio confirmed to Deadline that its execs and Condon have indeed pushed pause. I am told the actors aren’t walking away. In fact, they are not committing until this all gets rectified.

“After thoughtful consideration, Universal Pictures and director Bill Condon have decided to postpone Bride of Frankenstein,” Universal said in a statement to Deadline. “None of us want to move too quickly to meet a release date when we know this special movie needs more time to come together. Bill is a director whose enormous talent has been proven time and again, and we all look forward to continuing to work on this film together.”

Even though the studio carved out that release date long ago, it sounds like they are still trying to establish exactly what this film should be, with Bardem and Jolie waiting for more rewrites by David Koepp before committing. A little caution here seems well placed after the the film that launched Universal’s monster program, The Mummy, turned into a confusing pastiche of action scenes without a sense of authorship of what exactly it wanted to be. An action adventure in the vein of the Stephen Sommers Brendan Fraser-Rachel Weisz films, or a truly frightening film like the 1932 original was for its time? Even though it grossed $407 million worldwide, the scariest thing about The Mummy was its reviews. There are numerous filmmaker-driven monster movies that will follow, but the welfare of the franchise is contingent on getting the next one right.

Condon won his Oscar for writing Gods and Monsters, about the last days of Frankenstein director James Whale. He spent a lot of time considering that filmmaker and his work. Now that he’s recreating arguably Whale’s best film for today’s world with two intense stars like Bardem and Jolie, wouldn’t the best course of action be to make a terrifying, well-drawn and possibly R-rated tale, even if that isn’t the template for the usual global blockbuster? That is the direction I bet this is going.

The other major movie Jolie is engaged in, Maleficent 2, just got Joachim Ronning as its director at Disney. That film seems likely to  start sometime early next year.
