X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Pushed Until February 14, 2019)

Post by WyldeMan on 22/04/17, 06:12 pm

In addition to release dates for Deadpool 2 and New Mutants, 20th Century Fox today also announced a third X-Men movie for release in 2018: X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Yes indeed folks, the Dark Phoenix storyline will be tackled once again in what appears to be the next film in the main X-Men franchise following last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will open in theaters on November 2, 2018, which follows the April release of New Mutants and June release of Deadpool 2, capping off a banner superhero year for the studio. On that November date, the film will be squaring off directly against Disney’s live-action Mulan and opens one week after Warner Bros.’ motion-capture Jungle Book: Origins and Sony’s reboot The Girl in the Spider’s Web.

But the release date is pretty much all we officially know about X-Men: Dark Phoenix. We exclusively broke the news recently that Simon Kinberg, the writer/producer of X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse as well as the producer of Deadpool and X-Men: First Class, was being eyed to direct the next main X-Men movie. Fox hasn’t yet confirmed if Kinberg will indeed be directing X-Men: Dark Phoenix (he’s certainly writing it), but if the studio is ready to announce a release date they must be close to landing the film’s director.

Kinberg has been itching to tell the Dark Phoenix story for some time now. He was a co-writer on X-Men: The Last Stand, which told a version of the Dark Phoenix comics arc but which Kinberg admits missed the mark. Now, with Sophie Turner being introduced as the new Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse, it appears Kinberg and Co. are ready to hopefully nail this popular comics storyline.

The involvement of Bryan Singer in this film is unclear. He returned to the X-Men franchise to helm the swell X-Men: Days of Future Past and also directed the underwhelming X-Men: Apocalypse, but Fox just dated the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody for release in December 2018 with Singer directing, so he most certainly won’t be helming X-Men: Dark Phoenix but he’ll likely remain involved as a producer.

As for when Dark Phoenix might start filming, it’ll have to get underway this summer if Turner is involved. She’ll be due back to shoot the final season of Game of Thrones this August or September, so again, I imagine Fox already has the film’s director in mind.

We’ll certainly share more information as we get it, but right now all Fox will officially say is that X-Men: Dark Phoenix is hitting theaters on November 2, 2018. And with Deadpool 2 and New Mutants also set for release next year, the studio appears to be making a pretty big superhero statement in 2018. Coming off the smashing success of the R-rated Logan, it’ll be curious to see how the studio continues to branch out in the superhero genre.

I wish they would just make a deal with Disney the same way Sony did with Spider-Man.

Simon Kinberg Set to Direct ‘Dark Phoenix;’ Jessica Chastain in Talks For Villain Role

Producer Simon Kinberg is set to direct “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.”

Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, and Kodi Smit-McPhee are all reprising their roles when production begins in Montreal.

Newcomer  Jessica Chastain is in talk to join the cast in a new role as a villain.

The film will focus on Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey as it features the iconic story of the Dark Phoenix saga from the X-Men comics. The Phoenix, in the form of Jean, appeared as the primary antagonist of “X-Men: The Last Stand.”  She was portrayed by actress Famke Jansen in “X-Men: The Last Stand.”

Kinberg, who co-wrote “X-Men: The Last Stand” – the franchise’s first attempt at the Dark Phoenix saga — was reported several months ago to be in talks to not only write the “Apocalypse” sequel but to direct the film as well.

Production on the film is expected to take place from the end of this month until early t0 mid-October in Montreal.

Kinberg is producing with Hutch Parker and Lauren Shuler Donner. Kinberg is also a producer on “Deadpool 2,” as well “X-Men: The New Mutants.”

As a villain? Nice! But she could have been a perfect Poison Ivy on the DC side.

Yep. If Jessica does sign on, I am in Very Happy Hope they don't hide her under too much make-up/CGI.

She'll probably wear an unflattering suit that zips to the throat.

‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ Pushed Back to 2019, ‘The New Mutants’ Moves to Next Summer
Fans will have to wait a lot longer to see Fox’s next movies based on the X-Men franchise as the studio announced Monday that Simon Kinberg’s “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” would move from November 2, 2018 to February 14, 2019.

As a result, the horror-driven X-Men spinoff “The New Mutants” is also moving, from February 22, 2019 to August 2, 2019.

The studio also bumped “The Force,” James Mangold’s adaptation of a Don Winslow novel about a crooked NYC cop, from its release schedule altogether. It had been booked for March 1, 2019.

In addition, Fox announced that Bryan Singer’s eagerly awaited Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” would hit theaters in the midst of Oscar season, on November 2, instead of its previous Christmas Day release.

Joe Cornish’s medieval epic “The Kid Who Would Be King” moves back two weeks, from February 14, 2019 to March 1.

Fox also announced that Roxann Dawson’s faith-based drama “Breakthrough” starring “This Is Us” star Chrissy Metz will land on April 12, 2019 — one week before the animated feature “Spies in Disguise” that had previously been set for January 18, 2019.

With the move of “Dark Phoenix,” which stars “Game of Thrones” alum Sophie Turner as the telepathic mutant Jean Grey, a.k.a. Phoenix, the studio will be releasing only one “X-Men” movie this year: this summer’s R-rated “Deadpool” sequel.

“Dark Phoenix” will also star Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Michael Fassbender, Olivia Munn, James McAvoy, Tye Sheridan, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters and Alexandra Shipp.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmn Mutants! Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz

Why ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ and ‘The New Mutants’ Were Delayed
X-Men: Dark Phoenix marks the directorial debut of franchise writer/producer Simon Kinberg and brings back the star-studded cast of X-Men: Apocalypse, plus Jessica Chastain in a key role. Kinberg’s script convinced A-list talent like Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender to return even though their contracts for the franchise ran out with Apocalypse, but with A-list talent also comes high-class scheduling issues.

Sources with knowledge of the situation tell us that Dark Phoenix had a test screening to see what was working and what wasn’t, and like most big budget films it needs some additional photography—this is standard procedure for blockbusters nowadays. But given the in-demand nature of this A-list cast, getting all the necessary cast members assembled for reshoots is no easy task. The earliest availability for everyone to return was August or September of this year, which would leave just a couple of months to complete necessary visual effects for the new scenes. That wasn’t enough time, and so Fox decided to push Dark Phoenix’s release date to February to give everyone the time necessary to complete the needed additional photography and post-production on said sequences. So the release date delay for this film is basically just an issue of scheduling.

New Mutants is a different matter, however. When the film was initially delayed, it was reported that Fox wanted to do some reshoots to make the movie scarier, even going so far as to add a new character. That still holds true, and while we hear the film tested well, it’s not “scary” enough. Director Josh Boone delivered a cut of the film that he was happy with, but Fox wants this movie to stand out as tonally distinct the same way Logan and Deadpool did.

The reshoots that the studio wants are now even more significant. We’re hearing that at least 50% of the movie may be reshot, and they’re adding one or two new characters who will be present throughout the entirety of the film—this isn’t simply adding a cameo. Moreover, Boone has been having some creative differences with the studio over the requested changes to the movie, so the reasons for the New Mutants delay are more complex than why Dark Phoenix is being pushed.

lol They've got a lot of work to do. They said the same thing about Deadpool 2 test screenings. Must be the new thing with superhero or big budget movies nowadays.
