Han Solo (May 25, 2018)

Post by WyldeMan on 1/11/2016, 1:21 pm

Disney and Lucasfilm are inching closer to finding their young Han Solo for the upcoming untitled “Star Wars” spinoff.

Sources tell Variety that after seeing thousands of actors, execs have cut the list down to about a dozen actors with Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood, Logan Lerman, “Brooklyn” star Emory Cohen and “Everybody Wants Some” actor Blake Jenner among the names making the cut.

NDAs and test deals are still being worked out, but producer Kathleen Kennedy and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will begin testing the new group with a decision expected in the next couple of weeks.

The film does not shoot until next January, but sources close to the situation say the reason for such an early decision has more to do with another “Star Wars” film currently shooting, rather than the untitled “Han Solo” pic. While insiders were unable to confirm, the new Solo could have a small cameo in “Rogue One: A Star Wars” before appearing in his own standalone pic.

“Rogue One” still has a month of shooting to go and is supposed to be set between “Episode III” and “Episode IV,” making this new Han Solo age appropriate for an appearance in the film. Disney and Marvel used the same strategy for their new Spider-Man by casting Tom Holland early in order for him to cameo in “Captain America: Civil War” before appearing in his own film.

With the exception of Eastwood, who’s 29, Disney and Lucasfilm seem to be zeroing in on actors between the ages of 20 to 25. The studios tested actors as young as 17 to as old as 34.

I love how they auditioned thousands of actors and landed on the exact same usual suspects. If they were casting any older Pratt, Fassbender and Cooper would have been on the list too.

Blake Jenner is married to Supergirl's Melissa Benoist and like her, he's also a Gleek.

These choices are all pretty awful for Solo and I've never even been a fan of his. I always liked Chewie way more than that dude.

Alden Ehrenreich Emerges As Front-Runner For Han Solo Film
After screens tests that narrowed down the field of possible actors portraying Han Solo for the stand-alone movie in the Star Wars universe, Alden Ehrenreich has emerged as the front-runner for the coveted role. The casting of this character has been shrouded in secrecy — to the point of it being referred to as project Red Cup (get it? Solo cups). After screen tests, it was narrowed down to only a handful of actors that included Taron Egerton and Jack Reynor. However, sources with knowledge of the casting process, said that Ehrenreich is now leading the pack after after an impressive performance.

The newcomer is also the lead in Warren Beatty’s yet untitled “Howard Hughes project” which will receive a fall release from Fox this year. The 26 year-old actor also gave a stand-out performance this year in Hail, Caesar!

The Han Solo film, which Disney is slating for release on May 25th, 2018, will be directed The Lego Movie team of by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The picture will focus on Solo’s days before he linked up with the rebel alliance. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy is producing. Lawrence Kasdan is exec producing with Jason McGatlin. Kasdan — who wrote Star Wars pics The Empire Strikes Back, Return Of The Jedi and The Force Awakens — scripted the new pic with his son Jon Kasdan.

Disney did not return an email seeking comment. CAA, who reps Ehrenreich, would not comment either. Like we said, this casting is being guarded like it’s a matter of national security.

I'm surprised anyone is excited about a Han Solo movie. Why anyone would want to watch a non-Harrison Ford Han Solo movie is beyond me.

Han Solo is a cocky asshole who only survived as long as he did cause he managed to luck into a 7 foot hairy beast who was always saving him. Every time I watch the originals I must ask myself, why do people like this idiot? He never thought anything through, he just runs into gun fire like a newb playing COD for the first time. Then again, fanboys still jerk off to constant thoughts of Bobba Fett being the greatest character of all time and he was a minor as fuck character who died before he ever did anything cool. Damn jet packs overvaluing players! Razz

Bobb Fett's bitch ass went right into a Sarlac Pit cause he sucked at jetpacking. Razz

The Mandalorian's where an awesome culture, I really enjoyed the arcs that Star Wars Clone Wars did on Mandalore but the movies have never touched on anything that made me care about them.

I'd be down for a movie about Chewie and the Wookie's but I don't give a damn about Hanjob Solo.

RUMOR: Alden Ehrenreich Has Signed A Three Picture Deal To Appear As HAN SOLO

It was made official at the Star Wars Celebration that Alden Ehrenreich (“Hail, Caesar!”) would play the young Han Solo in Disney’s upcoming spinoff film. According to a new report by the NY Daily News, the 2018 movie won’t be the last time we see Ehrenreich portray the clever Smuggler.

NY Daily News reports that Disney has quietly signed Ehrenreich, 26, to a three picture deal, which would certainly make sense considering the fact that most actors receive this deal if they’re a part of a big franchise. The report also says that if the first Han Solo film is a success at the box office, two more could be in the works. This information comes from an insider who says Disney has “a real sense of excitement” for the Han Solo spinoff, and that the studio feels as though the character Han Solo could “become a central figure in several movies”

So far, not much is known about the upcoming anthology film, however, we do know that it will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller ("The Lego Movie"), and that the screenplay was penned by Jon Kasdan and Lawrence Kasdan ("Star Wars: The Force Awakens"). If this report turns out to be true, would you be excited to see a trilogy of Han Solo films?

Donald Glover to Play Young Lando Calrissian

May the Force be with you, Donald Glover. The “Atlanta” star has landed the coveted role of Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo standalone starring Alden Ehrenreich.

The pic will be set prior to “Star Wars: A New Hope,” like the other upcoming “Star Wars” standalone project, “Rogue One.”

“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” said Phil Lord and Chris Miller. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

Testing for the role of Calrissian has been going on for months with actors like O’Shea Jackson, Jason Mitchell and “The Get Down”‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen among those who have tested. Glover was considered the favorite but just to be sure co-directors Lord and Miller decided to do a second round of tests earlier this month with Glover and Mitchell. Glover was eventually tapped for the role.

There was some worry that scheduling Glover’s hit show “Atlanta” and the Han Solo shoot would be an issue, with the series just getting a second season. Since Glover is also the creator and heads the writers room for “Atlanta,” there was a worry that his commitment to running the room — which is open now and would of gone into production in March — would cause scheduling conflicts.

Sources now say they will probably bank all the scripts now and move production to next summer to accommodate the Solo shoot.

Variety first reported that Zoe Kravitz, Naomi Scott and Tessa Thompson had recently tested for the female lead and it was believed that Glover had tested around the same time.

Production on the untitled Han Solo film is expected to begin in January.

Played originally by Billy Dee Williams in “Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi,” the Lando character is a fan favorite in the “Star Wars” universe and it was unknown, until recently, if he would be making an appearance in any of these standalone movies.

The Han Solo prequel will  hit theaters May 25, 2018.

The latest movie in the blockbuster franchise, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” opened in December and has hauled more than $2 billion worldwide.

It’s official: Woody Harrelson is joining “Star Wars.”

The actor confirmed Variety‘s story from earlier this month that reported he’ll be in the upcoming Han Solo spinoff during an interview at the Variety Studio presented by Orville Redenbacher at the Sundance Film Festival.

Asked by Variety if he would be playing Han Solo’s mentor in the spinoff, Harrelson responded, “Yeah, I am.”

Like fellow “Star Wars” spinoff “Rogue One,” which just crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, the currently untitled Han Solo spinoff will be set prior to “Star Wars: A New Hope.” Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke also star, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller are set to direct.

Harrelson already had close ties to one of the film’s producers, Allison Shearmur. The two worked together on “The Hunger Games” films, in which Harrelson also played a mentor to another young hero: Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen.

The highly anticipated Untitled Han Solo Star Wars movie officially began principal photography yesterday at London’s Pinewood Studios with Alden Ehrenreich as the lead in a story that will tell the genesis of everyone’s favorite character made famous by Harrison Ford. The movie, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, also includes Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Thandie Newton, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. The movie will release on May 25, 2018.

The film will cover events in Han Solo’s life that took place prior to his appearance in 1977’s Star Wars. Lucasfilm already has the Star Wars Expanded Universe line of books and comics featured several novels about the scoundrel’s younger days. It has since been rebranded as Star Wars Legends. The film is the second in the Star Wars stand-alone franchise that begin with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which has grossed over $1 billion worldwide. This one has long been expected to be titled Han Solo: A Star Wars Story (and that is already branded and known by fans) but Disney and Lucasfilm are still saying the film is untitled.

Written by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, it is being produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur, Simon Emanuel and co-produced by Kiri Hart, Susan Towner and Will Allegra. Lawrence Kasdan and Jason McGatlin will executive produce.

Some of the industry’s top talent, including director of photography Bradford Young (Academy Award nominee for his work on Arrival), editor Chris Dickens, SFX supervisor Dominic Tuohy, VFX supervisor Rob Bredow and acction designer Brad Allan are joining returning Star Wars veteran crew members Neal Scanlan (creature and droid FX creative supervisor), production designer Neil Lamont, co-costume designers Dave Crossman and Glyn Dillon, prop master Jamie Wilkinson, Lisa Tomblin (hair), Amanda Knight (make-up) and Nina Gold (UK casting director).

Lord & Miller Quit Han Solo Film Due To “Creative Differences
Surprising news just now from Lucasfilm, which just posted at starwars.com that the company has parted ways with directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller on the Star Wars stand-alone movie centered on Han Solo due to “creative differences.” Despite the change, Lucasfilm is sticking to the Memorial Day 2018 release date for the film via Disney. Here’s the post:

The Untitled Han Solo film will move forward with a directorial change.

“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm.

“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” stated Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

The untitled Han Solo film remains scheduled for a May 2018 release.

The stand-alone movie officially began principal photography in February at London’s Pinewood Studios, with Alden Ehrenreich starring in the origin story about the Star Wars character made famous by Harrison Ford. Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca also star.

Written by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, the film was set to cover events in Han Solo’s life that took place prior to his appearance in 1977’s Star Wars. This movie long has been expected to be titled Han Solo: A Star Wars Story (and that is already branded and known by fans), but Disney and Lucasfilm still are saying the film is untitled.

Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are producing, with Kiri Hart, Susan Towner and Will Allegra co-producers and Lawrence Kasdan and Jason McGatlin executive producers.

Lord & Miller Fired After Clashing With Kathleen Kennedy (EXCLUSIVE)
Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s reputation for writing irreverent, poppy films such as “21 Jump Street” and “The Lego Movie” helped the white-hot writing and directing duo land one of the most coveted gigs in Hollywood — a chance to call the shots on a “Star Wars” film.

But their chance to put their stamp on a galaxy far, far away collapsed on Tuesday with the stunning announcement that the pair would be departing the still untitled Han Solo spin-off movie in the midst of production. Their exit comes after months of conflict with producer Kathleen Kennedy, others from her LucasFilm team, and co-writer and executive producer Lawrence Kasdan, and the two directors hired to infuse the “Star Wars” universe with a tongue-in-cheek sensibility.

Miller and Lord were stunned to find that they were not being granted freedom to run the production in the manner that they were accustomed to. They balked at Kennedy’s tight control on the set.

A person with knowledge of the production said that the chemistry between the directors and Kennedy was never right.

“It was a culture clash from day one,” the source said. “She didn’t even like the way they folded their socks.”

The source said that while Lord and Miller were supposedly hired for their vision and distinctive brand of filmmaking when it came to the “Star Wars” production, Kennedy did not approve of their shooting style and process of interacting with actors and crew. “They weren’t given the leeway to do what they had to do,” the source said.

The duo also clashed with Kasdan, who has been an integral creative part of several “Star Wars” movies, dating back the the 1980 “The Empire Strikes Back.” Like Kennedy, he questioned many of the pair’s directing choices.

“Kathy, her team and Larry Kasdan have been doing it their way for a very long time. They know how the cheese is made and that’s how they want it made,” said the source. “It became a very polarizing set.”

In statements accompanying news of the directing shakeup, both Kennedy and Lord and Miller alluded to differing visions for the project.

“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” said Lord and Miller in a statement.

Kennedy promised a new director would be announced shortly. Sources say Ron Howard is in talks to take over the film, but there is no deal as yet.

It is unclear if and how Lord and Miller will be credited on the movie. Hollywood insiders said their forced departure in the middle of filming was a highly unusual situation.

Kennedy said in a statement, “Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways.”

The directors did not leave the production voluntarily, but were fired by LucasFilm. The decision comes as the Han Solo film still has several weeks left to shoot, according to another individual with knowledge of the production. An additional several weeks of reshoots have been planned to take place later this summer.

It’s not clear who will take over directing duties from Lord and Miller. Tony Gilroy (“Michael Clayton”) oversaw some of the reshoots for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” However, he will not be directing the Han Solo film, according to his spokesperson.

Kennedy had her own ideas about how the film should be shot. In an interview with Variety last year, she said she wanted the film to have “…a heist or Western type feel,” adding, “We’ve talked about [Frederic] Remington and those primary colors that are used in his paintings defining the look and feel of the film.”

Some insiders believe that while Kennedy wants to make a splash by hiring young indie directors such as Gareth Edwards (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”) and Rian Johnson (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”), she’s ultimately unwilling to empower them to make their own creative decisions.

Unlike Edwards and Johnson, Miller and Lord felt they had earned their stripes, having worked extensively in the major studio system.

The Han Solo film will focus on the Millennium Falcon pilot’s early days as a smuggler. The film stars Alden Ehrenreich in the role Harrison Ford made famous. The cast includes Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson, Michael K. Williams, and Emilia Clarke.

A spokesperson for Disney declined comment, other than to say that the Han Solo standalone remains slated for a May 25, 2018, release date. Lord and Miller’s reps also declined comment.

if the producer wants it to look and feel a certain way and has an idea how she wants the cast to be directed why doesn't she do it herself? Nobody is watching these forvthe director. Michael Bay could "direct" and people would still come.

But Kennedy was so petty they mentioned she didn't even liked the way they folded their socks? I mean what the fuck is that noise?

The other name being thrown around is Joe Johnston.

Ron Howard to Take Over as Director of ‘Star Wars’ Han Solo Spinoff
Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard will take over as director of the “Star Wars” Han Solo spinoff, Lucasfilm announced.

His hire comes after the movie’s original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired Tuesday, while in the middle of production after clashing with producer and Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy and co-writer/executive producer Lawrence Kasdan. The duo, who had previously overseen “The LEGO Movie” and “21 Jump Street,” wanted to inject more humor into the storyline and encouraged improvisation, something Kasdan did not appreciate.

Howard will begin work immediately. The picture still has several weeks left on its shooting schedule, and five additional weeks of pre-scheduled reshoots that were planned for later this year. The exact amount of time and money that it will take to actually complete the production (which was about three-quarters finished when the directors were fired), will vary depending on how much rewriting and reshooting Howard deems is necessary after reviewing the script and shot footage.

It is unclear just how Howard will be credited and whether he will share directing credit with Lord and Miller, or potentially take no credit at all (though that seems unlikely). Lord and Miller have the right to appeal any decision, but ultimately, the Directors Guild of America will make the call.

Howard previously worked with Lucasfilm  on 1988’s “Willow,” a fantasy adventure that garnered two technical Ocscar nominations (visual effects and sound editing) but was a box office disappointment. Howard’s credits also include hits such as “Parenthood,” “Splash,” “Backdraft,” “The Da Vinci Code,” “Apollo 13” and  2001’s “A Beautiful Mind,” about the brilliant, anti-social mathematician John Nash, which won four top Academy Awards including best director and best picture.

These days, however, the former child actor is in need of a big hit. He’s had a string of duds that include “Inferno,” “In the Heart of the Sea,” “Rush,” and “The Dilemma.” His last significant success was 2009’s “Angels & Demons.”

So George called up his old buddy Ron Howard.

Makes sense, they go way back.

Disney just ordered a skinny bowl of white rice to steal the credit for only directing 1/4 of the film. If he puts Thor in this, I'm gonna be super pissed.

More Reported ‘Han Solo’ Details Emerge; Acting Coach Hired, Editor Fired
As fans continue to try to assess exactly what the firing of directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller from the untitled Han Solo movie means, more reported details continue to emerge about exactly what went down. But before we get too deep, it’s important to keep in mind all of these reports surfacing over the last week are likely only giving pieces of the puzzle, and very one-sided ones at that. The teams behind Lord and Miller, Lucasfilm, and Disney are trying to mitigate the damage from such bad publicity, and thus many “sources” explaining what happened are no doubt trying to put the best possible spin on things so as to paint their client in the best possible way. So keep in mind that while these details are certainly interesting, they may only be small, skewed pieces of a much larger, more complex picture.

With that being said, a fresh report out of THR now adds more layers to the mix, including firings that preceded Lord and Miller. The report notes that in May, when production moved from London to the Canary Islands, editor Chris Dickens (Macbeth) was replaced with Oscar-winning editor Pietro Scalia, who works frequently with Ridley Scott on films like The Martian and Alien: Covenant. Moreover, Lucasfilm was reportedly “not entirely satisfied” with the performance that was being delivered by Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo and hired an acting coach to come in and work with him. THR notes that hiring an acting coach in and of itself is not unusual, but doing so this far into production is.

As soon as filming began it was clear that Lord and Miller would not be jettisoning their improvisational style that had been put to good use on films like 21 Jump Street, and in one instance the two reportedly used far fewer setups than Lucasfilm would have liked, resulting in less options in the editing room in terms of coverage. This process and vision proved to be at odds with what Kennedy and Lucasfilm wanted, all the while Lord and Miller reportedly felt they had “zero creative freedom” and felt they were being asked to perform under “extreme scheduling constraints.”

After the measures of replacing the editor and hiring an acting coach did not help matters, at least in Lucasfilm’s eyes, Kathleen Kennedy called writer/producer Lawrence Kasdan to come to London. Kasdan reportedly wasn’t crazy about Lord and Miller’s process, which involved shouting out alternate lines from behind the monitor as opposed to shooting everything exactly as scripted. Although the report notes that Lord and Miller acquiesced to Lucasfilm’s request to stick to the script—they’d shoot a few takes as written, then shoot more takes with alternate lines.

With Kasdan in London he had now, reportedly, become something of a “shadow director” and this understandably rubbed Lord and Miller the wrong way. It’s at this point that an impasse was reached and Kennedy pulled the trigger on replacing the filmmakers with Ron Howard. Howard is said to have been concerned with how Lord and Miller would react and had been emailing with them, with a source saying Lord and Miller have been “very supportive, very elegant.”

Production on Han Solo now resumes in July and will go through September, instead of wrapping in July as previously planned. This is key because Emilia Clarke and Donald Glover both have prior TV commitments they have to return to this fall, so there’s a pretty hard deadline for when production on Han Solo has to be completed in order to meet its May 2018 release date. THR’s report says that much of what Lord and Miller shot will be “very usable,” but it remains to be seen exactly how the Directors Guild of America will approach the film in terms of credit. Lord and Miller are absolutely warranted a “Directed by” credit, but if Howard shoots and directs an extensive amount of footage, he will as well.

On Rogue One, filmmaker Tony Gilroy essentially took over directing duties during reshoots but declined to seek a credit. Gareth Edwards played ball, stuck around for the reshoots and post-production, and remained onboard the film throughout. But seeing the writing on the wall, Lord and Miller were none too pleased about having this same situation happen to them, and so they stood their ground.

It’ll be interesting to see how Lucasfilm proceeds with hiring directors going forward. People like Edwards and Lord and Miller are fantastic hires, but they’re singular voices who are going to deliver a unique film. I think the studio is still trying to figure out exactly how Star Wars-y they want these spinoffs to be, and while they like bold ideas, it sounds like in actuality they want the movies to hew more traditional.

As a massive fan of Lord and Miller’s I’m still incredibly bummed about all of this, but the filmmakers will no doubt land on their feet. They basically have a standing offer to helm The Flash for Warner Bros. (they were attached before they were offered Han Solo), so it’s not like they’re hurting for material. This particular combination, however, just seemed like a match made in heaven.
