Mad Max: Fury Road ($375,836,354)

Post by WyldeMan on 12/10/2014, 10:25 am

Haunted by his turbulent past, Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa (Charlize Theron). They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.

The more movie threads I create I realize we have got a HUGE slate of films for 2015....wow.....and that's really the gateway because from then on 2016 and beyond is pure Metahuman and Superhero domination for the next four straight years at least.

I think what impresses me the most is their use of practical effects and actual car crashes over CGI.

There are kids losing their damned minds about these pictures because apparently the fact that Furiosa has one arm is a spoiler. So character details are spoilers now? What the hell is wrong with kids today?

We've known she has a bionic arm since the first trailer and I'm sure even before that. It's not a spoiler in anyway.

I'm guilty of this too, so many things have been integrated into our viewing habits that there isn't really a non-interactive way to watch anymore so it gives people a forum to bitch about everything, again I know this well. But it has made most people unable to just watch anything without picking it apart. I found myself bothered by the complete lack of a cohesive story in Son in Law. A 22 year old Pauly Shore movie, I had issues with the writing...I couldn't help it.....

Tom Hardy Says He’s Set for 3 More MAD MAX Movies

During the tumultuous production of Mad Max: Fury Road, there were plenty of rumors about how the film was a disaster, how it was turning out to be a total mess, and how the lead actors were butting heads. But here we are, a little over a month before release, and Fury Road looks incredible. It also happens to be one of the most anticipated films of the year. Interest is so high that Warner Bros. is putting the very first Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer in front of the movie.

And if Fury Road does well, it appears that we could see star Tom Hardy take over the franchise for a good while longer. In a new, lengthy profile at Esquire (via The Playlist), the actor reveals that he’s contracted for three more Mad Max movies in addition to Fury Road, though he cautions that “everything’s based on figures and how things are perceived.” So, in other words, he’ll be starring in more Mad Max sequels if this first movie takes off at the box office.

This actually isn’t a huge shocker, because director George Miller previously revealed that he’s written an entire new Mad Max trilogy. In fact, his initial plan was to shoot two movies back-to-back: Mad Max: Fury Road and Mad Max: Furiosa. So if Fury Road is indeed a success, there won’t be some lengthy development period for the follow-up—it’s already ready to go.

That's very bold, anything can go wrong on set so it's a risky move but great on screen. Although can you really notice that sort of stuff? I usually don't.

Absolutely, I notice. No matter how far CGI has come they can't make fire look real to me. I can always tell when it's just an effect or the real deal and nothing draws me out of a scene faster than shitty CGI.

I dunno. I suppose it's not really this movie. I just don't get excited about action movies anymore. They do nothing for me, though a big part of that has been because of CGI. Since a lot of Fury Road really is live-action, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

‘Mad Max’ Roars To $65M
International weekend estimates are now in from all of the studios with Warner Bros/Village Roadshow’s Mad Max: Fury Road the major new offshore entrant. The critically lauded pic grossed an estimated $65M in 68 overseas markets for a global total of $109.4M; it performed especially well in action-loving bases and is expected to have long legs. The worldwide booty makes Fury Road George Miller’s best opening ever and positions it atop the franchise as the biggest grosser ever in the series. There were No. 1s in 40 territories. And Max also helped make Warner the latest studio to join the $1B international box office club this year.

Fury Road roared out of the gate on Thursday at the same time it was premiering here at the Cannes Film Festival. There were over 9.1M admissions on nearly 16,900 screens across the session which lost a day it would normally have had given the Cannes event. Many markets like France typically bow on a Wednesday, but the film was held back to coincide with the red carpet, beginning its shows at 2 PM on Thursday.

A Black and White Version of FURY ROAD Will Be on the Blu-Ray

One of the most striking things about the terrific Mad Max: Fury Road is that, in a sea of de-saturated post-apocalyptic films, Fury Road embraces color. Director George Miller imbues the action pic with hues that truly pop instead of going the grit-and-grime route normally reserved for dystopian landscapes (see: The Road). However, according to Miller, the best version of the movie is quite different.

Speaking with /Film, the filmmaker discussed a black and white cut of Fury Road that he says is the best version of the film:

“We spent a lot of time in DI (digital intermediate), and we had a very fine colorist, Eric Whipp. One thing I’ve noticed is that the default position for everyone is to de-saturate post-apocalyptic movies. There’s only two ways to go, make them black and white — the best version of this movie is black and white, but people reserve that for art movies now. The other version is to really go all-out on the color. The usual teal and orange thing? That’s all the colors we had to work with. The desert’s orange and the sky is teal, and we either could de-saturate it, or crank it up, to differentiate the movie. Plus, it can get really tiring watching this dull, de-saturated color, unless you go all the way out and make it black and white.”

It’s fascinating to hear Miller say he prefers this black and white version, especially since the over-saturated nature of the visuals are one of the (many) reasons Fury Road stands out as distinct amongst a sea of other blockbusters. However, if you’re curious about this black and white cut, there’s a strong possibility you’ll get to sea it. Per /Film, Miller aims to put this version on the Blu-ray:

A while after this talk, during a post-film reception, I spoke with Miller about his affinity for that black and white version of Fury Road. He said that he has demanded a black and white version of Fury Road for the Blu-ray, and that version of the film will feature an option to hear just the isolated score as the only soundtrack — the purest and most stripped-down version of Fury Road you can imagine.

So that’s pretty magnificent. I imagine Fury Road will be a must-own home video release, and I only hope that the disc is stacked with hours of behind-the-scenes footage that delve deep into making of this new classic.

Check out a B&W version of the Mad Max: Fury Road trailer below (also via /Film).

'Fury Road’ Runs Over $300M, Looks To Int’l Box Office To Carry It

Mad Max: Fury Road has just surpassed $300M at the worldwide box office so far, but it’s a far cry from becoming a profit maker yet. With a hefty budget of well over $200M in production, marketing and distribution costs, this Warner Bros./Village Roadshow actioner is going to have to pull in much more to break even. It’s in its fourth week in release on both sides of the pond and will make around $8.2M this weekend domestically. Directed, written and produced by George Miller, the pic is at $302M as of today and, of course, that number will rise substantially once it hits China (which is still unscheduled).

All eyes are on the movie’s foreign haul at the moment. Last weekend in 70 markets, it grossed $21.6M on over 10,000 screens. It is performing well in such markets as Korea where it has been No. 1 for three weeks in a row and is currently playing in the UK, France, Australia (where it has been in heated competition with Pitch Perfect 2), Russian, Brazil, Mexico, Germany and Spain. It will bow in Japan on June 20th.

The studio is counting on a big haul from overseas and strong word-of-mouth to carry it through. It does seem to have strong legs overseas so far. Its international take estimated at $177M as of today. After this weekend, it will be around $130M domestically.

Was able to catch this the other day. Not a bad movie. It's a little too much for me like "The Raid". Character development was at bare-minimum and the action starts pretty much immediately and rarely lets up. Definitely blu-ray worthy, I think. A couple of the deaths were pretty good, too.

It was essentially a two hour car chase movie like they used to make in the 70s, mostly flash no real substance though I felt like the story was still enough to carry the film, I was interested in the characters the whole time. George Miller is old school and I felt that cannon wise Fury Road was a very nice followup to the original trilogy.

I was also quite amused seeing Angel Salvadore, Beast and Elvis's granddaughter all riding around with Max, Furiosa and a smokin hot runway model. Pretty trippy.

I hope everyone understood my post above. Anyway, saw this last night, not what I expected. I didn't like it that much. I liked the way it was filmed and all the action sequences but that's about it. Not a lot of dialogue from Max and some backstory on him would have been great. No explanation at all on who that little girl was, assume it's his daughter. For a 2 hour movie, it ended pretty quick with not a whole lot going on.
