Saw: Legacy (Vandervoort / Rennie / Passmore) (October 27) Jigsaw10
Bloody Disgusting has just confirmed that Michael and Peter Spierig will be directing the currently untitled eighth SAW with Lionsgate releasing in theaters on October 27, 2017.

Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger – the same scriptwriting duo behind Piranha 3D, Piranha 3DD, and Sorority Row – were previously reported as the film’s writers.

Franchise co-creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell are acting as executive producers.

As I wrote previously, Peter and Michael Spierig first broke onto the genre scene when Lionsgate released their undead horror Undead back in 2003. Since, they were hired by the studio to direct the vampire sci-fi epic Daybreakers, while also delivering the masterful sci-fi paradox horror Predestination. Next up, Jigsaw.

The brothers were recently attached to direct Winchester Mystery House, which has been in development for years. I think it’s safe to assume this is going on the backburner as SAW is scheduled to shoot from September-October in Toronto, Ontario.

The seven SAW films grossed $874 million at the box office worldwide and were hailed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “Most Successful Horror Franchise” of all time.

SAW was the first collaboration for co-creators James Wan, who directed the film, and Leigh Whannell, who wrote the screenplay. Together, they also created the successful Insidious franchise, and Wan has gone on to direct such high-profile films as The ConjuringThe Conjuring 2, and produced Annabelle and the upcoming Lights Out.

Directed by Wan from a script penned by Whannell, SAW is a psychological thriller focusing on two men who wake up in a secure lair of a serial killer, with a dead body lying between them. The killer, nicknamed “Jigsaw,” leaves them tape recorded messages with details of how to make it out alive. The only way for one man to make it out alive is to do the unthinkable. The two men desperately try to find a way out, while also trying to figure out who’s behind their kidnapping.

The film, which was released over Halloween weekend on October 29, 2004, was produced by Gregg Hoffman, Oren Koules, and Mark Burg.

Maybe the Spierig's can get Ethan Hawke and find a script that makes me give a shit about this franchise.

I didn't think we were ever getting another Saw movie. The first one was awesome. It blew my mind and I didn't see the ending coming at all. And then you have that killer Saw score to go with it, love it.

The first one was good but the other six sucked. It could have been a lot more than torture porn but then it became juts was like every other slasher. Pointless characters and a really gruesome body count. I always felt like this franchise might as well just say Eli Roth or Uwe Boll all over it cause that's the level of talent involved.

I agree with you. It became less interesting as the franchise went on for sure.

First ‘Saw: Legacy’ Plot Details; Tobin Bell Returning
Saw: Legacy (Vandervoort / Rennie / Passmore) (October 27) Saw-le10
Set for release on October 27th, eighth franchise installment Saw: Legacy hopes to revive the series that seemingly came to an end back in 2010; but what the hell is it about?

Plot details have thus far been shrouded in secrecy, to the point that we haven’t yet seen a trailer or even any official still images, but we were able to exclusively get our hands on the first story details.

Bloody Disgusting has learned that Saw: Legacy will begin with bodies turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade. Or has an apprentice picked up the mantle of Jigsaw, perhaps even someone inside the investigation?

We understand that neither Costas Mandylor nor Cary Elwes will be returning to play their respective characters, who both ended up becoming Jigsaw apprentices in earlier installments. As for the original Jigsaw himself, we’ve been told that Tobin Bell will be back in some capacity.

The cast also includes Mandela Van Peebles, Hannah Anderson, Laura Vandervoort, Brittany Allen, Callum Keith Rennie, Matt Passmore, Hannah Emily Anderson, Josiah Black, Shaquan Lewis, Michael Bolsvert, and James Gomez.

Saw: Legacy was written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, the duo behind Piranha 3D, Piranha 3DD, and Sorority Row. In the director’s chairs were the Spierig brothers, Peter and Michael, who brought us Undead, Daybreakers and Predestination.

Franchise staples Mark Burg and Oren Koules returned to produce.
