In The Heart of the Sea ($93,920,758) H1yix3M

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

I get bored cause all the scenery looks the same until you actually break the surface and see what's below, that's why I won't bother watching another movie set at see until Aquaman.

It does all look the same but this movie seems to change it up once in awhile.

Aquaman will be epic though.

Knowing me I'll most likely just skip it now. Not a huge theater person really and I'm not even sure if I would have actually gone to see it this Spring. Only movie that is a 100% guarantee to get me to the theater right now is Entourage.

Chris can't seem to catch a break, outside of Marvelverse.

He was great in the film Rush.

Haven't seen Blackhat yet, but it looks good.

Sadly, it tanked at the box office.

Wasn't he in the remake of NL's Vacation?

Yes he was also in Vacation and after Heart he's got Ghostbusters.

‘In the Heart of the Sea’ to Take a Dive at the Box Office
In The Heart of the Sea ($93,920,758) In_the10
It’s going to be rough sailing for “In the Heart of the Sea.” The whaling drama is on track to be one of the biggest flops of director Ron Howard’s career and will serve as a painful coda to what has been a devastating year for Warner Bros., the studio behind the picture.

The story of the Essex, a whaleship that had a nasty encounter with a sperm whale, inspiring Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick,” is projected to bring in between $12 million and $14 million when it unspools across 3,103 theaters. That’s a disastrous launch for a drama that carries a production budget that hovers around $100 million.

The picture debuted overseas last weekend, earning a mediocre $18.5 million from 38 markets. If it has a prayer of clawing into the black, it will need foreign audiences to warm to the survival story — and quickly. “In the Heart of the Sea’s” poor showing comes as Warner Bros., once considered to be the most formidable studio in Hollywood, is reeling from a series of costly flops such as “Jupiter Ascending” and “Pan.” The studio has one more film left to open, a remake of “Point Break” that debuts on Dec. 25, and can take solace in the performance of “Creed,” which has made a solid $65.8 million since debuting over Thanksgiving.

At least, the suffering won’t be Warner’s alone. It co-produced and co-financed “In the Heart of the Sea” with Village Roadshow and originally intended to release it last spring before shifting dates. Chris Hemsworth, who suffered another massive flop earlier this year with Michael Mann’s “Blackhat” and has been unable to prove he can open a movie outside of “Thor,” stars in the film. Reviews for “In the Heart of the Sea” have been respectable, but the picture, despite its historical pedigree and Howard’s past Oscar success, hasn’t registered in the awards conversation.

Howard, an Oscar winner for “A Beautiful Mind,” has had his own box office travails of late. Three of his past four movies — “Frost/Nixon,” “The Dilemma” and “Rush” — have been money losers. He returns to firmer commercial ground next year with the release of “Inferno,” an adaptation of the popular Dan Brown novel.

Even though its opening is shaping up to be abysmal, it may be enough for “In the Heart of the Sea” to capture the box office crown from “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.” The science-fiction adventure has topped charts for three consecutive weeks and is headed for a weekend of roughly $10 million. Another holdover, the darkly comic horror film “Krampus,” should snag third place with an $8 million second weekend.

Overall, it’s looking pretty dead out there. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” debuts on Dec. 18, when it is expected to steamroll everything in its path, and many players are holding back their holiday offerings until the week of Christmas.

Just saw on Yahoo that this was "disastrous" in the BO. You called it, Wylde.

I don't know if Chris is having a bad luck or if it's his performances. I did like Rush and although that wasn't too distant from the type he usually plays, he was still great in it.

NOTE: "In the" is missing in the thread title.

Why do you think they stacked the Huntsman cast with Oscar winning actresses when he's supposed to be the franchise star? Cause they know he can't open a movie on his own, Chris is no Dwayne "Franchise Viagra" Johnson.

I could smell the dead bloated whales carcass a year before it finally beached on opening weekend. No matter what they called this movie it was doomed before production began.

Yep. Everyone yammered about him being a star, but there was no way Thor wasn't going to be popular the way they built the MCU. They could have cast Corey Fieldman as Thor and it would have done big $$$.

Unfortunately, everyone assumed it was because of Hemsworth. He fucking looked great as Thor, and it made him a household name, but not someone with star power. Big difference.

Exactly, Thor didn't really require much range other than to just look buff and man pretty to get all them lady dollars comin in. The merchandising sells itself to boys, its a guy with a big hammer who smashes shit, what kid doesn't want that?

Unfortunately the studios keep giving him prime roles that should go to actors with talent because somewhere along the way that boy made a bad Crossroads deal.

‘In the Heart of the Sea’ Drowns With $11 Million Debut
Ron Howard’s “In the Heart of the Sea” sunk at the box office this weekend, mustering up a measly $11 million after debuting in 3,103 theaters.

It’s a painful flop for the director behind “A Beautiful Mind” and “Apollo 13,” one of the worst of his Oscar-winning career. With an $100 million production budget, the film will likely result in a steep write down for Warner Bros., the studio behind the seafaring epic. “In the Heart of the Sea’s” failure is the latest in a long string of missteps for the company, which is reeling from a litany of disasters that includes “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” “Jupiter Ascending” and “Pan.” The studio did catch a break over Thanksgiving when “Creed” emerged as a sleeper hit and its financial exposure is softened on “In the Heart of the Sea” because Village Roadshow was a backer.

“We stand behind Ron and his vision for the story,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president. “We believe in him. He’s a terrific filmmaker. But some movies work and unfortunately some movies don’t.”

“In the Heart of the Sea” reunites Howard with Chris Hemsworth. The pair previously collaborated on the racing drama “Rush.” It centers on the Essex, a whaling vessel that had a violent encounter with a sperm whale. That nautical disaster inspired Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick.” Outside of the “Thor” movies, Hemsworth has struggled to establish himself as a box office draw — “Rush” and this year’s cyber thriller “Blackhat” both fizzled.

The film is the latest adult-oriented drama to collapse at the box office, joining a list that includes “Steve Jobs,” “Our Brand is Crisis” and “Burnt.” The opening weekend audience for “In the Heart of the Sea” skewed older.

Ticket buyers were 54% male and 68% over the age of 35, while 3D screenings accounted for 42% of receipts. Warner Bros. hopes it can make up some ground over the holidays, noting that the B+ CinemaScore means word-of-mouth will be solid.

“The adult audience has been slow to come out and that’s frustrating because this is a story well told,” said Goldstein.

Of course, the whole weekend was a throat clearing of sorts as the movie business braces for the debut of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” on Dec. 18. The return to a galaxy far, far away is on pace to shatter records for a December opening and could threaten “Jurassic World’s” debut of $208.8 million to become the biggest launch in history.

With “In the Heart of the Sea” flailing, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” will capture first place for the fourth straight weekend with $11.3 million. The science-fiction franchise capper has earned $244.5 million domestically.

Among holdovers, “The Good Dinosaur” nabbed third place with $10.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $89.7 million. “Creed” captured fourth position with $10.1 million. The boxing drama has earned $79.3 million after three weeks of release. “Krampus” dropped 58% in its second weekend of release to round out the top five with $8 million. The Christmas-themed horror film has earned $28.1 million stateside.

On the awards season front, “The Big Short” capitalized on Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations to pick up the year’s second largest per-screen average of $90,000. The film, which stars Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling and explores the origins of the recent financial collapse, earned $720,000 from eight theaters. A wide release is scheduled for Dec. 23.

“We think the movie will cross over and be mainstream entertainment,” said Rob Moore, Paramount’s vice-chairman.

“Spotlight,” another Oscar front-runner, reached an important milestone, crossing the $20 million mark after earning $2.5 million.

Overall, the box office slipped 10% from a year ago when Ridley Scott’s “Exodus: Gods and Kings” topped charts and earned more than $24 million. Theater owners and studios have openly predicted that blockbuster-stacked 2015 would be the biggest year in history, but ticket sales have floundered in the final quarter of the year. Now, the movie industry will look to Luke Skywalker to revive its fortunes.

“I don’t think you can take away how much the Force is overshadowing everything right now,” said Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “Until [‘The Force Awakens’] opens, everything else will be a non-factor.”
