The Dark Tower (August 6th)

Post by WyldeMan on 11/16/2015, 5:47 pm

Matthew McConaughey is being eyed to star in the big screen adaptation of Stephen King‘s “The Dark Tower,” multiple individuals familiar with the situation have told TheWrap. While insiders insist it’s early and neither side has committed, they admit preliminary discussions have taken place and both parties are interested in striking a deal.

Though TheWrap was initially told that McConaughey was being eyed to play gunslinger Roland Deschain, which was correct, subsequent trade reports suggest he was offered that role as well as the villainous Man in Black, and that McConaughey is leaning towards embracing his dark side. The actor is the rare A-lister without a movie franchise, but that could change be about to change, regardless of what role he chooses.

Sony Pictures and MRC are co-financing the ambitious feature film, which Nikolaj Arcel will direct from a script by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner that’s primarily based on the first book in King’s series, “The Gunslinger.”

King’s book blends horror and fantasy to tell the tale of a gunslinger who has taken up the lifelong quest of locating The Dark Tower – which is the nexus of the universe — before evil invades and destroys the tower, ending all existence.

It’s unclear whether the TV component would require the involvement of the actor who plays Roland Deschain, or if it will follow other characters in the “Dark Tower” universe.

Of course, McConaughey is no stranger to TV, having starred in the first season of HBO’s “True Detective.” He also worked with producers Howard and Grazer on another “TV” project — “EdTV.”

Sony chief Tom Rothman has positioned “The Dark Tower” as the start of a global franchise, saying in an earlier statement that “there are few projects out there that compare with the scope, vision, complex characters and fully drawn world that Stephen King.”

In recent months, McConaughey has been rumored to play the villain in Josh Boone‘s upcoming adaptation of King’s “The Stand,” but that project is still in development at Warner Bros. and not as close to starting production as “The Dark Tower,” which is slated to hit theaters on Jan. 13, 2017. It’s unlikely McConaughey would star in both King adaptations, and the fact that a role in “The Stand” could be waiting for him down the line could pose a threat to his participation in “The Dark Tower.”

McConaughey, who won an Oscar for his devastating turn in “Dallas Buyers Club,” recently turned down a key role in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” and is currently prepping to host “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, though he has a relatively open schedule in 2016. He hasn’t committed to any movies filming in 2016, though McConaughey’s “Interstellar” director Christopher Nolan will be casting his next movie for release in 2017.

McConaughey just wrapped Gary Ross‘ Civil War thriller “Free State of Jones” and Stephen Gaghan‘s drama “Gold,” and is lending his voice to the animated movies “Sing” (Universal/Illumination) and “Kubo and the Two Strings” (Focus/Laika).

Idris Elba Front-runner To Play Roland Deschain

Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital may just have found their lead gunslinger for The Dark Tower, the Stephen King novel series set in a world woven with magic and revolving around the gunslinger Roland Deschain. I’m told that Idris Elba has emerged as the front-runner to play Deschain. He would square off against Matthew McConaughey, who’s in talks to play the villainous Man in Black. Nikolaj Arcel is directing.

There is no deal yet, and nobody would comment for the story. But this would give Elba that long-awaited star vehicle that has seemed inevitable, coming after all of the speculative questions over whether the 007 franchise would install an actor of color into the iconic James Bond role after Elba was mentioned as a strong possibility to replace Daniel Craig. King wrote the Deschain character as white — at least that is how he is depicted in the book cover illustrations — but in Elba they get a top actor who has shown in the BBC series Luther and other works that he is a movie star with swagger.

He is currently in the Oscar mix for his performance in Beasts Of No Nation, the Cary Joji Fukunaga-directed first feature for Netflix. All this makes him a fresh choice to play Deschain. The recent discussions narrowed down to Elba and Javier Bardem (who circled a previous version of the project), and really, either guy brightens up what is shaping up to be a most intriguing iteration of a franchise that had many false starts at Universal and then at Warner Bros, before MRC and Imagine and Weed Road brought it to Tom Rothman at Sony Pictures.

McConaughey came into the picture recently, and the project really got a boost when they hired Arcel, the Danish helmer of the Oscar-nominated A Royal Affair and also the co-writer of the Swedish film version of the Stieg Larsson novel The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Arcel, who just turned in a script for a Robert F. Kennedy film that Matt Damon will star in for Warner Bros, has been working with fellow Danish filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen on a rewrite of the script, the last draft of which was written by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. Jensen is a prolific writer-director who won the Oscar for his short film Election Night.

Sony will distribute what is planned to be the first in a series of Dark Tower movies. A complementary TV series is also being developed by MRC. Producing are Weed Road’s Goldsman and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Erica Huggins. King is also a producer. That quartet has been involved in this franchise since the beginning, and MRC kept it going after Universal and then Warner Bros developed it and then dropped out. Pinkner is en exec producer.

First installment of The Dark Tower focuses on the first book in the series, The Gunslinger, establishing the relationship between Roland and young protege Jake Chambers. After a quick pass at the script, they will start casting the gunslinger — Bardem and Russell Crowe flirted with the role in past iterations — and the young protege.

Iris Elba is has been cast as Roland the Gunslinger.

Cue the meltdowns, just like when Boyega signed on for Star Wars.

Abbey Lee In Talks; Idris Elba & Matthew McConaughey Confirmed
Coming off her role as one of the "Five Wives" in George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, Aussie actress and model Abbey Lee has apparently been offered the female lead role of Tirana in Sony Pictures and MRC's adaptation of the first novel in Stephen King's The Dark Tower saga. The trades report that Idris Elba is also officially on board as The Gunslinger himself, Roland Deschain, and Matthew McConaughey will play the villainous Man in Black.

Tirana is not a major character in King's novels, so we can probably expect some pretty big changes to the plot if she's been upgraded to female lead.

Nikolaj Arcel will direct The Dark Tower, which is currently set to bow on Jan. 13, 2017.

Well they had a Eight Dark Tower Books to adapt from, so if they're lacking in story it's cause Disney was in too big of a hurry trying to turn out another whore for top foreign dollars.

I was expecting The Dark Tower to have a running time of at least 150 minutes but as it turns out, it's only 95 minutes! Fuck that noise, no movies ever have a plot with a 90 minute runtime....this movie is dead to me.
