Escape from New York (Robert Rodriguez in Talks to Direct)

Post by WyldeMan on 10/13/2015, 9:19 am

Neil Cross, creator of the incredible Idris Elba-led series Luther, has been tapped to script 20th Century Fox’s action pic ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. The remake of John Carpenter’s 1981 classic is being produced by Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman of The Picture Company. Die-hard purists ought not to fear, as Carpenter is remaining creatively involved and will be executive producing the new iteration.

Sources confirm that Fox is trying to relaunch this one in the hopes of capturing the same success that was afforded to their Planets of the Apes revival. Mike Ireland is overseeing for the studio.

The 1981 original, directed by Carpenter and co-written by Carpenter and Nick Castle, starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, an outlaw who’s tasked with rescuing the president of the U.S. from the decaying maximum security prison known as Manhattan. Set in the twisted future of 1997, the film was a box office success and led to an eventual sequel, Escape from LA, in 1996.

Escape from New York is the second Carpenter remake in development at Fox, as the studio is also in the works on remaking Carpenter’s cult favorite Big Trouble in Little China, with Dwayne Johnson starring in the role of Jack Burton, as made famous by Russell.

Cross, who beat out a slew of other scribes for the job, is a series creator who has sidestepped into features on occasion. He worked on the Jessica Chastain-led horror film Mama and the Guillermo del Toro-directed Pacific Rim.

However, Cross is best known for his series Luthor, which was renowned for it’s dark approach, gritty atmosphere, and superior character work. Luthor also of course helped propel the career of Idris Elba.

Wow, Neil Cross, it would seem that Fox is taking this seriously. Especially if they are planning on it being as big as their Apes franchise. I am a very big fan of the Escape movies and while I'd love Kurt to make a third film I realized about ten years ago when they started talking about this remake that was never going to happen. With Cross now locked in, I look forward to seeing who will direct. Over the years we've seen heard various names like Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner, Jason Statham, Tom Hardy, Charlie Hunnam and Dan Stevens have all been rumored for Plissken over the years but none have ever entered into serious talks, so I'm curious to see who they're considering now. I also don't recall John Carpenter actually being involved with any of the aforementioned reboot plans either, so that's another nice surprise.

Thought this died, along with Gerard Butler's career.

Ohhh burn! The last time I saw Butler he was working the indie circuit, Chasing Mavericks wasn't bad and I also enjoyed Coriolanus and Machine Gun Preacher.

The studio was going after Charlie Hunnam but then he signed on for Fifty Shades before dropping out of that and then landed that six movie King Arthur deal.

When fame hit, Butler drowned himself in booze and endless random pussy.

His career suffered for it.

Reminds me of that old quote...

Cool

Gerard looks rough these days, rode hard then put away wet.

For a minute, I thought Fassbender was headed down the same path.

But he seems to be able to manage his career, while clubbing, boozing and whoring.

For now, but is starting to look a bit rough.

Thought the same thing, Fassy always has a different woman. But so far he still seems humble while he's whoring.

He just ended a FAUXmance with that Vikander chick.

Harvey Weinstein is really trying to make her happen over here.

Without that to prop her up and recent flops with U.N.C.L.E. and Seventh Son, curious to see what happens.

She's got Burnt with Bradley Cooper opening this weekend and a few completed projects yet to release and and she's shooting the next Bourne. Don't expect her to fade away too quickly.

She's so basic and bland, just like Serial Killer Cooper.

The tall chick in U.N.C.L.E. is more interesting.

Really like her in the Gasby remake, can't recall her name at the moment.

Have you seen Ex Machina yet?

The tall chick Elizabeth Debicki had a role in MacBeth with Fassy.

Getting back on topic at the same time, who could you see as the next Snake Plissken?

That'll probably depend on the director, if its a rookie or a vet.

Robert Rodriguez in Talks to Direct ‘Escape From New York’ Remake

The wheels on the Escape From New York remake are in motion once again. THR reports that 20th Century Fox is eyeing Sin City director Robert Rodriguez to helm their remake of John Carpenter’s dystopian action classic. Carpenter is on board as executive producer, and Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman of The Picture Co. (Non-Stop)  will produce.

The 1981 film starred Kurt Russell as the iconic eye-patched tough guy, Snake Plissken. Set in an alternate U.S. future (comically enough now, it was 1997 in the original film), Escape Ffrom New York takes place in the converted streets of NYC, where the island has been transformed into a maximum security prison. After Air Force One crashes into the hostile streets, Plissken — a former special forces operative serving time for robbery — is given 24 hours to rescue the president from the inside of the prison, and save his own life in the process. Russell returned as Plissken for Carpenter’s sequel Escape From L.A.

After trading hands through a number of studios and drafts, the project landed at 20th Century Fox in 2015, when they won the rights in a bidding war. The report notes that Fox is hoping to revive and reinvent the franchise in the same mold as they did with Planet of the Apes, which has spawned three critically and commercially successful films since launching in 2011. The studio has a couple other adult-oriented IPs on the burner. They’re gearing up for a likely box office success with Alien: Covenant, which properly revives Ridley Scott‘s Alien franchise after the semi-prequel Prometheus, and they recently recruited Sleight helmer J.D. Dillard for their reboot of David Cronenberg‘s The Fly.

Rodriguez has been keeping busy in recent years with his TV network El Rey and their flagship series From Dusk til Dawn. He is currently in post-production on Fox’s James Cameron produced live-action adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 20, 2018. It’s been a while since Rodriguez has put out a movie worth writing home about, but he showed a knack for loving homage with Planet Terror and his films certainly never lack for personality. An Escape From New York remake is a tough sell to begin with, but with Rodriguez behind the camera, there’s a small comfort in the fact that you won’t get a by-the-numbers studio mandate a la RoboCop and Total Recall.
