The Fate of the Furious ($1,212,583,865)

Post by WyldeMan on 10/5/2015, 3:51 pm

Hot off the success of “Straight Outta Compton,” F. Gary Gray has emerged as the frontrunner to direct the next chapter in the “Fast and Furious” franchise for Universal Pictures, an individual familiar with the studio’s search has told TheWrap.

While a representative for Universal had no comment, insiders suggest that studio execs are sitting down with producers Vin Diesel and Neal Moritz to decide between Gray and one other director whose identity remains unknown (likely Louis Leterrier), though Gray looks to have the edge at this point.

Gray would be a natural fit for the gravity-defying action franchise, as not only has he directed vehicular mayhem before in “The Italian Job,” but he previously worked with star Vin Diesel on “A Man Apart” and just made Universal a truckload of money with “Compton.”

The drama about rap group N.W.A. may not have grossed $1.5 billion worldwide like James Wan‘s “Furious 7,” but it did take in nearly $200 million worldwide.

Gray’s previous movies include the classic comedy “Friday,” the underrated thriller “The Negotiator,” crime drama “Law Abiding Citizen,” heist movies “Set It Off” and “The Italian Job” and the crime comedy “Be Cool,” which gave “Furious” star Dwayne Johnson the best role of his feature career up to that point.

Gray would also continue Universal’s streak of diverse hires on the “Fast” franchise following Wan and Justin Lin, and he’d be a strong fit among the multi-ethnic cast.

Universal is slated to release the next “Fast and Furious” movie on April 14, 2017.

‘Fast & Furious’ Spinoffs In the Works
The “Fast and Furious” franchise may take a page from “Star Wars” and Marvel. Producer and star Vin Diesel tells Variety that the team behind the fast cars and criminals series is in the preliminary stages of developing prequels and spinoffs.

“We’ve written out story lines for various characters,” said Diesel. “We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.”

The actor did not say which characters would get their own standalone films, but in the past, Dwayne Johnson has hinted that he’d like to see his character, Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs, branch out into independent adventures.

If the actors are game for some universe building it sounds like the studio is willing to back the projects. Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley confirmed that talks were taking place about ways to broaden the series’ reach.

“We’re certainly in conversations about how we can expand the franchise now,” said Langley. “It’s an ensemble cast and there’s room to bring characters in and out.”

If Universal does go forward with launching spinoffs and prequels, it will be aping a strategy successfully employed by the “Avengers” movies and one being embraced by “Star Wars,” which is augmenting a new trilogy with origin stories focused on Han Solo and others.

For now, however, the focus remains on creating three more “Fast and Furious” sequels. Diesel and Universal brass promise that the upcoming films will be different in tone from the adventures that preceded them. That’s why the studio brought in F. Gary Gray, the director of “Straight Outta Compton” to guide the eighth film in the series.

“We have a director who is going to bring the darkness out and bring out the character,” said Diesel, who promises that the film will be similar to his previous collaboration with the director, the gritty 2003 thriller “A Man Apart.”

The “Fast and Furious” films are known for their gravity-defying car races, but the studio wants to shift the emphasis in the next installment.

“You can’t keep having every movie have bigger and bigger stunts forever and ever and ever,” said Jeff Shell, chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. “Eventually you have to really focus on the story. We’ll still have big stunts but bringing in this amazing storyteller is going to be great.”

For his part, Gray says the series will be a departure from the rap epic he just finished making. “I’m a fan of the cars and the world and after being on ‘Straight’ for four years, it was time to have some fun,”

Shell admits that nothing lasts forever, but he believes that after more than a decade of movies, the success of the most recent chapter, “Furious 7,” indicates that the series is still growing its audience. It was the first film in the series to top $1 billion and benefited from the growth of foreign markets like China, where it made over $390 million.

“It’s at its peak now,” said Shell. “By the way, internationally something people forget is yes, this is ‘Furious 7,’ but probably half the people around the globe that saw ‘Furious 7’ hadn’t seen any of the other ‘Fast and Furious’ films in the theater. It’s new in China to them, it’s new in Russia to them, it’s new in most of Latin America, so this is a series that’s accelerating in my view, not slowing down.”

The most recent “Fast and Furious” film had added resonance to longtime fans of the series. Star Paul Walker was killed in an off-set car accident while production was taking place. In the wake of his death, Universal considered cancelling the film, before ultimately deciding to complete the project by relying on body doubles and digital effects.

“We would never have done this without all of Paul’s family agreeing.,” said Ron Meyer, vice-chairman of NBCUniversal. “We would not have done it without everybody in the cast agreeing. We took great pains to make sure that before we said, ‘yes lets go forward with this film,’ we knew that we were doing the right thing. Not only because there was a big investment involved, but because a young man’s life had been lost and he had a daughter and friends and family.”

Diesel praises the Universal team for the restraint it showed in dealing with Walker’s death.

“They took such a high road and allowed us to honor our brother in such a powerful way,” said Diesel, who praises Meyer and Langley with allowing Walker’s character to ride off into the sunset instead of dying in the film. “Another studio couldn’t have helped themselves by exploiting that in the plot,” he said.

Meyer said that the script for “Furious 7” always depicted Walker’s character’s struggling to come to terms with the criminal life he led and voicing a desire to abandon heists to be with his family. Those themes allowed the filmmakers to send off Walker’s character in a more organic way, although Meyer acknowledges that future “Fast and Furious” movies will be quite different without the involvement of one of the key actors.

“Paul won’t be in it, but he’ll be represented in some form or another but whether his image is in it, I can’t tell you yet, but he won’t be in the film as a performer, as an actor, the way we did it last time,” said Meyer. “It will still be ‘Fast and Furious,’ it will just be without Paul.”

Diesel has said he believes there are three more “Fast and Furious” films left in him, but Universal brass hinted there might be some flexibility with that figure.

“Vin has a vision in his mind for three more, so let’s get three more done and then see where we are from there,” said Shell. “Everything has an end, so I don’t think our expectation is we’re going to have a hundred of them…To me ‘Fast and Furious’ has become no different than a beloved series that comes on every year. ”

I can't imagine this franchise without Paul. Not sure how F7 was originally suppose to look, but when they had to re-structure that narrative because of his death, it just felt like a Dom & Friends movie. Even the scenes the real Paul was in felt like an after-thought.

Vin is the definition of a one dimensional actor. This shit's going to be terrible, and in NY? VFX studios are already dreaming of the fat pay-cheques heading their way. This shit's going to be green-screened to within an inch of its life. Will make the Star Wars prequels look like a stunt-man bonanza.

One dimensional?? Come on that guy has such a diverse field. He's got his Riddick franchise, his Fast franchise and he's even returning for more Xander Cage. Franchises littered with deeply enriched and wonderfully written characters. HAHAHAHA, Oh man I almost believed myself as I wrote that but gave up halfway through that sentence. If you're going to be nothing but a franchise figure, you might as well have some fucking swagger. At least The Rock is there to carry that dead weight. Razz

Fast 8 To Blow Up Iceland
Fast 8 continues to add international locations to its plans. The globetrotting film said to take place mostly in New York has already looked to film in Cuba but now it is looking to blow up Iceland.

A new report from Visir suggests the eighth addition to the franchise will film in the West Iceland town of Akranes. The report claims the project will shoot by the town's harbor and "Cement Fields."

It doesn't end there, though. Apparently, Fast & Furious 8 is looking to pull off the biggest explosion ever to take place in Iceland. Surely, all of the main characters will survive.

The Icelandic town is preparing for stores and services to be affected by the shoot but the Akranes mayor, Regina Asvaldsdottir, says the locals are very excited for the production to arrive.

Release Dates For ‘Fast & Furious’ 9 & 10 Set, Confirming 10-Film Series
Well racing fans, the talk over the last year or so hasn’t just been idle chit chat, and Universal’s second most successful franchise will indeed be 10-films long. As is customary for the series, the news comes courtesy of star Vin Diesel’s Instagram account, where tonight he revealed the release dates for the next three Fast & Furious films. As previously announced, Fast 8 drops April 14, 2017. Fast & Furious 9 will follow it on April 19,2019, with Fast & Furious 10 coming April 2, 2021.

Diesel long said that Fast 8 was intended to form the first installment of a trilogy that will bring the series to a conclusion after 10 films. That plan, he says, is in part meant to honor the memory of Paul Walker. That’s very touching, but of course the biggest factor in the decision isn’t sentiment, but money. Luckily for Diesel, the last installment, 2015’s Furious 7, was a huge hit for Universal that went on to earn $1.516 billion worldwide. Even so, the studio has until now declined to make it official official, though they’ve largely been treated as more or less inevitable.

Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray is directing the next installment of the series, Fast 8, with the full cast including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham expected to return. Neil Moritz is producing with Diesel.

She'll sign on.

Charlize isn't really Top A-List these days.

Fury Road is probably why this offer is on the table.

This franchise will continue to make money, sad. but true.

Strike while the iron is hot, can blame her if she does.

Charlize is producing and possibly co-starring in a tv series called "Mindhunter" with David Fincher at HBO and she's also got The Grey Man with Chris McQuarrie which is being tailored for her. All I'm saying is that I pray she's too busy with those projects for this shit.

Just don't introduce her as the wife of Statham or sister of those brothers. Gotta be a new character with a different story.

She probably works for the government and wants to take down Dom and his team. Razz

‘Fast 8’ Creates New Character; Scott Eastwood To Star
Universal in Fast 8 is introducing an exciting new character played by Scott Eastwood, the son of Clint Eastwood. This just went down, and he will join another newcomer to the franchise in Charlize Theron, the Mad Max: Fury Road heroine who made her deal last week.

The Fast & Furious team has excelled in adding juicy new parts to an already humming franchise engine, from Tyrese Gibson to Dwayne Johnson to most recently Jason Statham in last year’s tentpole hit Fast 7.  That comes as the franchise dealt with the tragic death of Paul Walker in a car crash, which came while Fast 7 was in production.

Eastwood and Theron are now buckled in as director F. Gary Gray and producer Neal Moritz move into production next month with franchise regulars including Vin Diesel, Johnson, Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese and others in the mix. Chris Morgan wrote the script, and a release date of April 14, 2017 has been set.

This could actually be good for Scott. More people will probably know him after this.

They've already been through that though. And isn't Russell's character with the government?

Considering that Govt's idea of competent operators is trying to kill a guy by having a dozen dudes repelling down ropes whilst shooting automatic rifles one-handed, instead of multiple angle sniper fire from their previously concealed superior positions - street racing punks saving the day sounds about right.

Hey! It's everyone's favorite actor, Scott Eastwood. I am looking forward to seeing Charlize Theron's character.

Fast 8 synopsis: Charlize Theron is another government agent trying to take down the crew. Throughout the movie, Charlize character seems to know their every move and is always hot on their trail. Hobbs and Elena help the crew because Fast and Furious, bro! Charlize finds out about Hobbs and Elena assisting them and they get put on the government's most wanted list also. Much like Paul Walker loved imports and Dom was into musclecars, Hobbs drives stolen military vehicles. (Imagine: Hobbs drifting APCs.)

Turns out Charlize is Gisele's sister and she blames the whole crew for Gisele's death. Owen and Deckard Shaw actually work for Charlize. Since they couldn't get the job done, she's gonna do it herself.

This time it's personal.

(During this whole movie, no one gives a shit about Scott Eastwood.)
