Offering a new take on the origin of the classic characters created by J.M. Barrie, the action adventure follows the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny—to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.

‘Pan’ Pushed To October

Here’s yet another juggle of Warner Bros’ release schedule — the third one today. Pan, the live-action film about Peter Pan that stars Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara, won’t make its July 24 release date, so the studio is moving the 2D-and-3D picture to the fall. Now it will bow October 9 in theaters, including Imax. In making the announcement, the studio said it is “giving both the film and the filmmakers some extra breathing room.”

Director Joe Wright expressed his appreciation. “As you might expect, the fantastical story of Peter Pan involves very complex effects, and I did not want to compromise on quality in finishing the film,” he said in a statement. “This allows me and my team the time to complete the movie and tell the story the way it should be told.”

By moving Pan out of the summer, the studio takes it out of a summer tentpole-cluttered season, which includes both Terminator Genisys and Ted 2 in June along with Ant-Man in July and the kid-friendly Minions from Universal, which would have bowed one week before.

It will compete that October weekend now with Universal Pictures’ Steve Jobs, which stars Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet and Seth Rogen. The only other picture is Relativity’s tentatively titled Kidnap.

Pan follows the beginnings of the beloved characters created by J.M. Barrie who live in Neverland. Jackman plays Blackbeard, and Mara will play Tiger Lilly. The cast also includes Levi Miller as Peter Pan, Garrett Hedlund, Amanda Seyfried and Adeel Akhtar (not to be confused with Adele Dazeem).

Wright is directing the project from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Oscar nominee Paul Webster (Atonement) are producing, with Tim Lewis serving as executive producer.

Warners today also also announced its next three movies in the Lego franshise as well as a new release date for the animated Storks starring Andy Samberg and Kelsey Grammer.

After re-reading that article about delaying the movie and it not having to face off with Minions was a definite right call! Just checked the numbers and Minions opened to $115 million before going on to gross $957 million in just over a month of release so far.....wow.........

If history has taught us anything it's that a 3D release will nearly always be saved by sweeping the foreign markets even if it does poorly here domestically.

I don't know why Hedlund doesn't look more like Hook in this, Blackbeard looks more like Hook. I don't know if they are thinking trilogy with this, they could be trying to start him as a good guy and then change him later on.

That's exactly how he's been marketed in his posters and all the trailers.

Box Office: ‘Pan’ Shaping Up to Be a Painful Flop
From Disney animated confections to NBC live musical events, Peter Pan has inspired several big and small screen productions over the years.

Some have been magical, others misbegotten. The latest trip to Neverland seems destined to fall into the latter category. “Pan,” an $150 million origin story about the boy who refused to grow up, is shaping up to be a painful flop. It is on track to follow the second star to the right and head straight on to a woeful $21 million this Columbus Day weekend across 3,515 locations. That means Warner Bros., the studio that greenlit the film with ambitions of turning it into a fantasy franchise, should brace itself for steep writedowns. In order for the studio to make a profit, a film like “Pan” will need to do at least $350 million to $400 million globally. A domestic debut on this level makes that figure unlikely.

“Pan” stars Hugh Jackman, Rooney Mara and Garrett Hedlund and was directed by Joe Wright of “Atonement” fame. Reviews have been savage, with critics handing the film a scrawny 38% “rotten” ranking on Rotten Tomatoes.

The studio is hoping that word-of-mouth will be more positive, but “Pan” faces stiff competition from “Hotel Transylvania 2,” which continues to draw family crowds, and next week’s “Goosebumps,” a loose adaptation of the R.L. Stine children’s books that has enjoyed strong reviews.

“It’s not an easy place to be,” said Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. “After a drought of family movies, now there’s a rush of them. Someone is going to lose out.”

The film could do better overseas. It opens this weekend in 52 territories, representing about 60% of the foreign market. It includes such major countries as Germany, Russia, Korea, Mexico and Spain. “Pan” has also scored a coveted berth in China, where it launches on Oct. 22.

The holiday brings another struggling studio effort into focus as Sony’s “The Walk” tries to recover from a lackluster limited Imax and premium-large-format release. The biopic about performance artist Philippe Petit’s walk between the Twin Towers disappointed with $1.6 million in its debut. It now expands from 448 theaters to more than 2,500 locations where it should bring in between $5 million and $7 million. The picture was shot for a relatively economical $35 million, which mitigates Sony’s risk, although breaking even could be hard to achieve given the tepid reception that has greeted “The Walk” so far.

Then there’s “Steve Jobs,” an Aaron Sorkin-penned look at the life of the father of the iPhone that stars Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet. The Apple founder biopic arrives looking for Oscar love in limited release. “Steve Jobs” bows in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles and will expand to additional North American markets on Oct. 16 before going wide the following week. Universal spent $30 million to produce the drama.

With “Pan” and “The Walk” failing to make much noise, two holdovers should generate the most heat. Ridley Scott’s “The Martian” nearly overtook “Gravity” last week to set a new record as the biggest October launch in history. Rave reviews and strong exit polls signal that it’s settling in for the long haul. The film about an astronaut marooned on the Red Planet should pull in $30 million in its sophomore weekend. “Hotel Transylvania 2” will also perform well, bringing in roughly $18 million.

‘Pan’ Flops With $15.5 Million
Pan ($124,937,715) Pan-mo10

Pan” walked the plank over the Columbus Day Weekend.

Warner Bros. spent $150 million to bring the Neverland adventure to screens and millions more in marketing, but the big budget fantasy mustered a puny $15.5 million opening. That debut puts “Pan” alongside “The Fantastic Four” and “Tomorrowland” in the pantheon of the year’s most punishing flops.

“It’s a huge misfire,” said Jeff Bock, box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations, adding, “We won’t see another Peter Pan film for awhile.”

“Pan’s” backers weren’t the only ones having a rough weekend. Sony’s “The Walk” stumbled in its wide release, expanding from 448 Imax and premium large format theaters to more than 2,500 locations, and eking out $3.7 million in the process. The biopic about Philippe Petit’s daring high-wire walk between the Twin Towers cost $35 million to produce and has clear Oscar ambitions for director Robert Zemeckis and the technical team behind the film. It has made a paltry $6.4 million in its initial two weeks. The Sony team seems discouraged that positive reviews and word-of-mouth hasn’t lifted “The Walk” higher.

“It’s a conundrum why more folks didn’t come out, because once you see it, it’s one of those films that you never forget,” said Rory Bruer, Sony’s distribution chief. “It’s a picture that everybody put their heart and soul into.”

With the new major studio releases teetering, Fox’s “The Martian” stabilized overall ticket sales. The space thriller slipped a modest 32% in its second weekend, nabbing $37 million and pushing its domestic total to $108.7 million. Sony’s “Hotel Transylvania 2” also showed impressive endurance, racking up $20.3 million in its third weekend and bringing its stateside haul to $116.8 million.

The top five was rounded out by Warner Bros.’ “The Intern” and Lionsgate’s “Sicario,” which earned $8.7 million and $7.3 million, respectively. “The Intern” has generated $49.6 million in receipts, while “Sicario’s” total stands at $26.7 million.

In limited release, Universal’s “Steve Jobs” scored, pulling in $521,000 across four theaters for a per-screen average of $130,236. That ranks as the best theater average of the year.

Bruised by poor reviews and the continued strength of “Hotel Transylvania 2,” “Pan” failed to deliver family crowds. Roughly 55% of its opening audience was female and 52% of ticket buyers were over 25 years old. The film rolled out across 3,515 locations. “Pan” was originally slated to open in July, but Warner Bros. pushed the film back into October citing the need for more time to complete the visual effects work. The film’s cast includes Hugh Jackman, Rooney Mara, and Garrett Hedlund. Joe Wright, best known for prestige fare like “Atonement,” directed the picture.

I love how studios are shocked that Pan and The Walk flopped. The Walk is about a french dude who high wire walked over 40 years ago. NONE of those things have ever been of an interest to me and I can't imagine too many of you are into high wire acts by a Frenchman but JGl hasn't made a movie that interested me in a long time. Not surprised both of these bombed, neither looked good based on the trailers. Every single Biopic seems to be done entirely for awards attention and if they don't get it, everybody involved is shocked.

It flopped hard here cause Ahmuricans don't really care about 3D but it hasn't gone to Asia yet where they have kept Johnny Depp's career alive for the last 15 years.

‘Pan’ Looks for China Life Raft as it Faces $100 Million Writedown
Pan ($124,937,715) Pan-mo11
Pan,” the pricey fantasy adventure about a boy who refuses to grow up, crashed on the shoals of audience indifference last weekend when it debuted in the United States and across more than 50 foreign markets.

The film has racked up a meager $40.5 million globally, which is a far cry from the $150 million that Warner Bros. spent to make the picture and the additional $100 million it shelled out to market it. Analysts and rival studio executives predict that the film will result in losses of at least $100 million, given that it needs to do at least $400 million in order to recoup its costs. Estimates for the film’s ultimate global gross ranged from $150 million to just over $200 million, either of which would keep the Neverland epic submerged in red ink.

The studio’s best chance of stanching the bleeding is China, where “Pan” is set to debut on Oct. 22. That country could comprise as much as 30% of the film’s overall ticket sales and might add as much as $60 million to its gross. “Pan” will be the only U.S. film in the week of its release, which could provide it with some breathing room. Recently, a number of films that have faltered domestically, such as “Pacific Rim” and “Terminator: Genisys,” have found China to be a reliable bulwark against financial catastrophe.

“Pan” could also do well in Japan, the world’s third-largest film market after the U.S. and China. The picture debuts in the country on Oct. 31 and some efforts have been made to bolster its appeal with local crowds. For instance, a Japanese pop song called “Beyond Eternity” by Seiko Matsuda has been included at the end credits.
But some box office watchers are unconvinced. They note that local language Chinese films such as “Goodbye Mr. Loser” and “Lost in Hong Kong” have dominated ticket sales and that there are a number of highly anticipated American movies due to hit theaters in coming months, such as “Ant-Man” and “Everest,” which could stifle business.

“I don’t think [China] will be the saving grace,” said Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. “There are a lot of strong local films that will overshadow it.”

Moreover, analysts and rival executives note that Peter Pan is a story that is virtually unknown to the Chinese public. Without a resonant brand behind it, the film will soar or sink on it visual effects, and that may not be enough to lure crowds.

“Pan” had the air of a troubled production ever since it was moved from a prime summer release date into the fall. However, its U.S. opening was even lower than pessimistic projections. The film managed to pull in a paltry $15.3 million, lower than its anticipated $20 million debut. Its failure compounds a disappointing year for Warner Bros. The studio scored with the disaster movie “San Andreas” and the Oscar contender “American Sniper,” but it lost tens of millions of dollars on the likes of “Jupiter Ascending,” “Entourage,” “We Are Your Friends,” and “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” Other pictures like “Mad Max: Fury Road” put up respectable global numbers, but cost too much to turn much of a profit. Next year looks stronger with “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and the Harry Potter spin-off “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” both on tap.

There are factors that do limit Warner Bros.’ financial exposure. The studio has a partner in “Pan” in RatPac Dune, which put up roughly a quarter of the budget, so it’s not alone in shouldering the losses. And as a division of Time Warner, which claims HBO and Turner in its portfolio of media holdings, one Warner Bros. film release is unlikely to put a dint in the company’s earnings.

“It will have no real bearing on the third quarter numbers,” said Eric Handler, an analyst with MKM Partners. “My guess is the writedowns already got baked in when they moved the picture.”
