War Machine (Brad Pitt ) (May 26 @ Netflix)

Post by WyldeMan on 8/19/2015, 11:27 am

Brad Pitt found his military sidekick in his new Netflix feature War Machine. Anthony Michael Hall (Foxcatcher) has been cast to star opposite Pitt in the satirical comedy from writer-director David Michôd (The RoverAnimal Kingdom). The project, which was inspired by the bestselling book The Operators: The Wild And Terrifying Inside Story Of America’s War In Afghanistan by the late journalist Michael Hastings, War Machine concerns a four star, “rock star” general whose lethal reputation and impeccable track record vaults him to command the American war in Afghanistan. While Pitt plays a character loosely based on Gen. Stanley McCrystal, Hall portrays the No. 2 in the military regime — General Hank Pulver, who is also loosely based on McCrystal’s second in command Gen. Mike Flynn.

Topher Grace will portray a civilian media adviser to Pitt’s four-star U.S. military general.

War Machine was acquired by Netflix earlier this year in an industry eyebrow-raising move that was considered a game-changer for the company. It not only marked the largest investment the company has made so far in a feature (around $30M), but they were able to grab hold of A-lister Pitt. The actor is producing with his Plan B Entertainment partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, and producer Ian Bryce (World War ZSaving Private Ryan).

I don't really like Topher. I don't think I've liked anything he's ever done.

I always liked him on T7S, his awkwardness was great but as for his dramatic work I've seen very little over the years but I thought he was good in Predators.

Will Poulter Joins the ‘War Machine’
Will Poulter has closed a deal to join Brad Pitt in the Netflix black comedy “War Machine.”

Topher Grace, Scoot McNairy, Emory Cohen, John Magaro and Anthony Michael Hall are also on board, with “Animal Kingdom” helmer David Michod directing and writing. Netflix will open the film in select theaters next year as well as stream on the film on its online service.

Pitt and his Plan B partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner are producing with Ian Bryce.

Based on Michael Hastings’ book “The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan,” the story follows a general, played by Pitt, whose track record lands him the commanding job in the American conflict in Afghanistan.

Principal photography is scheduled to start this fall.

Poulter broke out with a scene-stealing performance in “We’re the Millers” and followed that up with Fox’s “Maze Runner.” He was most recently seen in “Glassland” and will next appear in the New Regency film “The Revenant,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, which bows this December.

Will and Scoot McNairy are solid actor and John Magaro seems to be landing a lot of projects this month. Nice to see this cast filling out with such an unusual mix of talented guys.

90's Pitt is my favorite time in his career where he made the only war movie he ever needed to "Legend of the Falls". But his films "A River Runs Through It", "Seven", "Fight Club" proved how diverse he could be, now that he's a father he wants to only play soldiers. BORING. I myself not much a fan of historical war films where we watched young boys go off to die horrifically or do horrific things in the name of a government agenda that isn't their own. When I was a kid I liked war movies as much as anybody but then you see hundreds of them and realize they are all the exact same god damned movie over and over, same shit different war.

That's the problem with movies, they cover no new ground and all follow the same beats.

If you're going to watch such a thing, watch it done properly.

- Band of Brothers.
- Generation Kill.

Those are the exceptions to the rule and because they were tv shows it allowed for much more than pointless violence. If not for the stellar writing, BoB was just another WWII production of American Propaganda.

Generation Kill though, pretty much summed up all the bloody thirsty kids I went to high school with that went off to kill because their government said so and they badly wanted to kill and not go to jail. Only difference between a solider and a serial killer is soldiers get permission and a paycheck.

In a film for our times, writer-director David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) recreates a U.S. General’s roller-coaster rise and fall as part reality, part savage parody – raising the specter of just where the line between them lies today.  His is an anti-establishment, pro-soldier exploration in the form of an absurdist war story of a born leader’s ultra-confident march right into the dark heart of folly.  At the story’s core is Brad Pitt’s sly take on a successful, charismatic four-star general who leapt in like a rock star to command NATO forces in Afghanistan, only to be taken down by his own hubris and a journalist’s no-holds-barred expose. War Machine addresses the debt we owe to soldiers to question the purposes to which they are being directed.

The Netflix original film is inspired by the book The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan by the late journalist Michael Hastings.  Joining Pitt in War Machine is a highly decorated cast including Emory Cohen, RJ Cyler, Topher Grace, Anthony Michael Hall, Anthony Hayes, John Magaro, Scoot McNairy, Will Poulter, Alan Ruck, Lakeith Stanfield, Josh Stewart, Meg Tilly, Tilda Swinton and Sir Ben Kingsley. Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Ted Sarandos and Ian Bryce serve as producers.  James W. Skotchdopole, Pauline Fischer, Sarah Bowen and Sarah Esberg serve as executive producers. The film will be released on Netflix on May 26, 2017.

I checked this out and based on the trailer I thought it was just gonna be a comedy about war but it was actually better than I thought, it had some truth to it. I see why Pitt picked this particular war movie now. Still, I hope he stops doing war movies after this. Better to end this one a better note, I haven't seen Allied yet.

He's still got zombies to fight in World War Z 2 then he's gonna fight aliens in Ad Astra. Razz

Pitt's becoming a bit of a one trick pony these days with his war films.

I'll take WWZ 2 over a war movie though. Baby steps, who knows what other projects he picks in the future.

War with zombies, war with people, it's all the same shit. Besides after Legends of the Fall another war movie wasn't necessary but now in his middle age all he wants to do is make war movies like he's John Wayne. In a few years he'll start making westerns exclusively.
