The Tragically Heartbreaking And Uplifting Life Of Keanu Reeves Revealed

Post by GrooThePerverted on 6/22/2015, 12:06 pm

Found this piece on Facebook today. Was originally posted up in April of this year.  I knew about some of what he'd been through, but damn.  Tough goings.  Glad to see it didn't turn him into an asshole.

He's one of the very very very few that I've literally never heard a bad comment about, personally.

The Tragically Heartbreaking And Uplifting Life Of Keanu Reeves Revealed

In 1999, Keanu Reeves became most famous for his role in the groundbreaking science fiction film, The Matrix. It earned an impressive $463.5 million at the box office and was nominated for and won four Academy Awards. The Matrix is a happy story in a lot of ways, but the life of its star wasn’t always.

Now 50 years old, Keanu’s life has been full of more tragedy than you would expect from a movie star. Despite each setback, he’s kept pushing forward. It’s helped develop himself into the awesome person that he is on and off the screen.

At the age of three, his father left their family. They stayed in touch for a few years, but after the divorce and moving from city to city, they fell out of contact. Keanu attended four different high schools and struggled with dyslexia, making his education more challenging than it is for most. Eventually he left high school without earning a diploma, though through sheer will, he is an avid reader now.

At the age of 23, his closest friend River Phoenix died of a drug overdose. During a Reddit AMA last year, Keanu said: “He was a remarkable human person and actor. We got along very well, and I miss him. I think of him often.”

In 1998, Keanu met Jennifer Syme. The two fell instantly in love and by 1999, Jennifer was pregnant with their daughter. Sadly, after eight months, their child was born stillborn. They were devastated by her death and it eventually ended their relationship. 18 months later, Syme would die in a car accident.

In 2006, Reeves told Parade Magazine, “Grief changes shape, but it never ends.” It’s a lesson that we’ll all likely learn.

Even with those incredible tragedies, Reeves would push on. He’s starred in a variety of blockbusters and has become a wealthy man, but the pain of his losses has changed how he thinks about money. He’s well known in Hollywood for being among the more charitable actors. EDIT: Removing Urban Legend about him giving 80million of his 114million profits from The Matrix series to the Special Effects crew.  He didn't do that, but he DID basically restructure his contract to give the back end points/profit sharing to them.

He also took pay cuts on the films The Replacements and The Devil’s Advocates so stars like Gene Hackman and Al Pacino would agree to be in the film while keeping casting within the designated budget.

There are some incredible personal accounts of his kindness as well. Redditor Kahi made the following comment about the Sad Keanu meme:

“A family friend builds movie sets, doesn’t design, is one of the poor dudes that just builds. Anyways he worked on the set for the Matrix and Keanu heard about family trouble he was having and gave him a $20,000 Christmas bonus to help him out. He also was one of the only people on the set that genuinely wanted to know people’s names, would say hello and mean it, and would talk to people as if they were his peers and not below him just because they were practically making nothing to build a set. I’ve never heard anyone say Keanu is a douche, seems like the nicest person in Hollywood from a second hand experience.”

In his AMA, he told fans that he likes to keep it simple. In 2003, Keanu told Hello! Magazine: “Money is the last thing I think about. I could live on what I have already made for the next few centuries.”

Even though he’s likely worth $100 million, the man still rides the subway. And he’s super nice about it too.

So in the end, I think we can all pretty well agree that even in the face of tragedy, a stellar person can thrive.

I read about Syme's death a longtime ago, she was on her way back to a party at Marilyn Manson's house, which if you didn't know, his song “Just a Car Crash Away” on his Eat Me Drink Me album was about her death. Can't recall if her partying was what caused the accident but I seem to remember her driving into a bunch of cars while being thrown from her own and dying on impact. She was an actress but the only thing I remember her being in was David Lynch's Lost Highway where she had a small role but her still dedicated his film, Mulholland Drive to her.

I knew he went through something tragic but I didn't know what exactly, poor guy. He's a cool dude and I wish him all the success because he certainly deserves it. He's been doing some good movies lately and look forward to watching his next one.

He's one of those cats that I just sort of one day woke up and realized that I pretty much liked them in everything I'd seen them in, and that I see them get so much flack for no legit reason.

Ethan Hawke's another one, although to be fair I don't see him get a lot of criticism, but he's a favorite actor of mine and I've found myself watching several movies of his lately.  Looking forward to seeing him in "Good Kill".

Whenever I used to say that I was an Ethan Hawke fan people would ask "who?" then years later it was "that guy in Training Day?" For some reason people give that guy no respect. I remember on the Overnight Delivery docu about the asshole Troy Duffy making Boondock Saints, him shit talking Hawke on the phone to somebody who suggested him for the movie.

Keanu has indeed had a rough go in life, but didn't let it break him. Know two people that met him and they said he's a very sweet person.

Ethan Hawke has made some really interesting choices in his career. Dude loves working repeatedly with Directors he had positive experiences with.

Richard Linklater

Andrew Niccol

and now The Spreig Bros.

All ended up becoming very close friendships off camera.

I got 3 Ethan Hawke movies lined up in VUDU to watch that I have never seen.  Ya'll see these?  What are your thoughts?

01. Daybreakers
02. Cymbeline
03. Getaway

I heard 1 and 3 were horrible though I'll probably enjoy them.

I still need to watch Boyhood also

Only saw Daybreakers, I liked it a lot.

Not your run of the mill vampire film, plus there's also the greatness of Sam Neil and Willem Dafoe.

Also heard that Getaway is awful, Ethan is paired with former Disney teen Selina Gomez.

As we've established I am a Hawke fan but I acually got angry with him while watching it because he's so much better than that steaming pile of shit. Probably the worst movie he's ever made. Daybreakers wasn't a great movie but it was still far better than Getaway and I enjoyed Cymbeline which has a pretty solid ensemble cast.

Anytime you're co-starring with Selena Gomez, you need to reevaluate your career.

Daybreakers isn't great, but it's good. More of a sci-fi feeling vampire movie which I really liked

Plus The Spreig Bros made a very stylish film , on a shoe string budget.

The blu-ray has the most extensive making of I've ever seen. I think it's longer than the movie.
