Robin Hood: Origins (Taron Egerton / Jamie Foxx / Eve Hewson)

Post by WyldeMan on 6/8/2015, 10:10 pm

Aside from the Spider-Man job, the hot directing job this week has been to helm Lionsgate’s Robin Hood: Origins. Lionsgate met with numerous hot helmers, but I’m hearing that they will set Otto Bathurst. He’s the filmmaker who established the modern, distinctive tone on the period UK gangster series Peaky Blinders. He’ll be directing a Robin Hood as conjured up by Joby Harold, the scribe who wrote Knights Of The Roundtable: King Arthur, the franchise of films that has Guy Ritchie directing Charlie Hunnam.

This one is an origins story that has been likened to The Dark Knight. Here, Robin Hood returns from fighting in The Crusades and finds that Sherwood Forest is rife with corruption and evil. He forms a band of outlaws and they take matters into their own hands. This is a gritty take, with no felt hats. The picture is being produced by Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson, and Safe House’s Harold and Tory Tunnell.

Bathurst is scheduled to direct Three Seconds, an indie that stars Luke Evans and David Oyelowo, but Lionsgate is moving fast on this one in hopes of starting production by early 2016. There is reason to be in a hurry, with rival projects at Disney, Warner Bros and Sony.

Sounds exactly like Scott's Robin Hood from 2010.

Bathhurt's style is very different from Scott's especially when it comes to not using those ridiculous shaky cam action shots that Scott and Greengrass are usually so engrossed with. I'm a big Peaky Blinders fan and I love the dark grittiness Bathhurst has managed to capture on that series and I'd love to see what he can do here. Looks like Joby Harold just can't stop writing medieval tales, he and Guy Ritchie locked down a potential massive six film franchise based on his King Arthur writing so I'm looking forward to seeing what Harold and Bathhurst can bring to the legend of Robin Hood. As for the summary reminding you of Scott's Robin Hood, I think that based on the two sentences of details, this sounds exactly like very single Hood adaptation before it.

Origins’ Shortlist: Jack Huston, Nicholas Hoult, Jack Reynor, Taron Egerton

Lionsgate is looking to beat its rival Robin Hood projects to the punch by mining up-and-coming talent from across the pond for its Robin Hood: Origins. Rising Brit actor Taron Egerton is on the mini-major’s shortlist to head into Sherwood Forest, along with fellow Brit Jack Huston and Irish-American actor Jack Reynor. The Maze Runner‘s Dylan O’Brian is also believed to be under consideration. Scheduling is an issue for some of these hot young thesps. For example Egerton, who came to prominence with a career-making turn in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, could have availability issues if a sequel to Kingsman, which grossed over $400 million worldwide, gets its expected greenlight from Fox.

Deadline understands that Reynor had a successful session with director Otto Bathurst, the only actor who did that, and that perhaps gives him a slight advantage on the likes of Hoult and Huston, though no decisions have been made. All of the above names would bring plenty — and different — strengths to the role.

Peaky Blinders‘ Bathurst is directing Lionsgate’s gritty, revisionist take on the legend. Joby Harold, the scribe who wrote Knights Of The Roundtable: King Arthur with Guy Ritchie directing Charlie Hunnam, has conjured up the origins story that has been likened to The Dark Knight. Here, Robin Hood returns from fighting in The Crusades and finds that Sherwood Forest is rife with corruption and evil. He forms a band of outlaws and they take matters into their own hands. The picture is being produced by Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson, and Safe House’s Harold and Tory Tunnell and Basil Iwanyk.

There are other Robin Hood projects also set up around town. Disney has the Brandon Barker spec Nottingham & Hood, which is said to be in the vein of Pirates Of The Caribbean and Enchanted. The Picture Company’s Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona are producing. Sony last fall bought a Robin Hood pitch for $1 million from Cory Goodman and Jeremy Lott with Aperture’s Adam Goldworm executive producing. That project, Hood, has been described as Fast And Furious meets Mission: Impossible. Warner Bros has also quietly put one of its own Robin Hood projects into development, scripted by Gangster Squad and Aquaman scribe Will Beall and produced by The Lego Movie‘s Dan Lin and John Zaozirny.

With the quartet of projects vying to get to the start post, Lionsgate is doing everything it can to get out of the gates first. It is aiming to start production in the first quarter of 2016. The last time there were rival Robin Hood projects was in 1991, when the Kevin Costner-starrer Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves went against the Patrick Bergin-Uma Thurman Robin Hood and wiped the floor with it despite being released a month later.

Of the names on that list I'd say Huston or Egerton would be my preferred choices. I think they should include Jack O'Connell but maybe they're worried about having too many Jacks. Though what the hell is up with the total randomness of Dylan O'Brien being included? He's the only American on that list.

I'm hoping some of the Blinders will have roles, Cillian Murphy would make a fantastic Sheriff.

It's looking like Taron Edgerton is entering into final talks, though his scheduling with Kingsmen 2 may prevent this.

Eve Hewson is Maid Marian In ‘Robin Hood: Origins’ Opposite Taron Egerton

Eve Hewson has landed the role of Maid Marian in Lionsgate’s Robin Hood: Origins, the Otto Bathurst-directed film that will go into production next summer right after Taron Egerton stars in the sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service. Egerton plays Robin Hood, and while negotiations are just beginning, barring some unforseen calamity he’ll share the screen with Hewson, the Irish-born actress who starred in The Knick and who’ll be next seen in the Steven Spielberg-directed Bridge Of Spies.

This was a much coveted job — over 100 young actresses were considered — and I’d previously written that Hewson was part of a short list that included Dutch actress Gaite Jansen (Supernova), Australian thesp Lucy Fry (Vampire Academy) and British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle). It’ll be Hewson who shines up Sherwood Forest.

Peaky Blinders‘ Bathurst is directing the gritty, revisionist take on the legend.

The picture’s timing was moved back a bit because Egerton had an option to fulfill on the Kingsman sequel, but I’m told this movie is definitely going. It’s not the only Robin Hood movie percolating. Disney has the Brandon Barker spec Nottingham & Hood, which is said to be in the vein of Pirates Of The Caribbean and Enchanted. The Picture Company’s Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona are producing. Sony last fall bought a Robin Hood pitch for $1 million from Cory Goodman and Jeremy Lott with Jerry Bruckheimer producing and Aperture’s Adam Goldworm executive producing.

God damn Bono's daughter is a fox. Been seeing her face a lot lately with her career blowing up since The Knick hit.

I look forward to this, as a big Peaky Blinders fan I know Bathurts' style and I can't wait, especially with this crew and the way the cast is shaping.

I cannot recommend it any higher. I love that series and you could be caught up in twelve hours. Cillian Murphy is fantastic and Tom Hardy joined in season 2. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

Robin Hood Reboot Pushed for 'Kingsman 2' Shoot

Taron Egerton’s 2016 has gotten clearer.

The rising star, who broke through with the Matthew Vaughn-directed comic book adaptation Kingsman: The Secret Service, had been caught between the dueling schedules of Liongate’s Robin Hood reboot and Kingsman 2.

The latter had been distributed by Fox but was produced and financed by Vaughn and his MARV Films banner. MARV, which had first dibs on the actor, had planted its flag for an April shoot while Lionsgate was aiming for a February start.

The situation didn’t look rosy last week, when Vaughn exercised his option on the actor, meaning that Kingsman 2 was going ahead no matter what, throwing Robin Hood: Origins temporarily into a loop. Would it wait for Egerton or recast?

But now that the dust has settled, THR has learned that Hood will shoot, with Egerton, after Kingsman wraps, likely at the end of summer 2016.

The moves have opened up Egerton’s winter slot but it may not lie vacant for long. Sources tell THR that the actor is attached to star in Crooks County, an indie crime drama package that is hitting the town. The project tells the true tale of a whistleblower involved in an undercover FBI operation in 1980s Cook County, Illinois, that resulted in the largest number of convictions of government officials in American history. Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly wrote the script.

That sucks. Didn't like Kingsman so I would rather get Hood first as I'll most likely like it.

Jamie Foxx Is Little John In Lionsgate’s ‘Robin Hood: Origins’

Jamie Foxx did a good impression of Steve Harvey at last night’s Golden Globes, but here’s his next big screen turn: he’ll play Little John in Robin Hood: Origins, the gritty Otto Bathurst-directed film that Lionsgate will put into production late summer or fall. He joins Kingsman: The Secret Service star Taron Egerton, who plays the title role, and Eve Hewson, who is set to play Maid Marian in a film that stars production after Egerton wraps the Kingsman sequel.

Foxx’s character is more in the mold of the muscular turns he has put into films like Django Unchained than some wizened mentor. Little John is a battle hardened but war weary veteran of The Crusades who starts out distrustful of Robin Hood (they fought on opposite sides), and then warms to the young hero in the gritty revisionist take on the legend. Bathurst is best known for Peaky Blinders, and the script is by Joby Harold,  who wrote Knights Of The Roundtable: King Arthur, which Guy Ritchie wrapped with Charlie Hunnam. What they’ve got here has been compared to Robin Hood with a Dark Knight tone, as Robin Hood returns from fighting in The Crusades and finds that Sherwood Forest is rife with corruption and evil. He forms a band of outlaws and they take matters into their own hands. The picture is being produced by Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson, and Safe House’s Harold and Tory Tunnell and Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk.
