A Dog’s Purpose (PETA Protesting in Theaters) Empty A Dog’s Purpose (PETA Protesting in Theaters)

Due to the swirling controversy over the now viral video of a German Shepard being forced into the water and later slipping under the water as a handler scrambles to save it on the set of A Dog’s Purpose, Universal has cancelled both the press junket and the weekend’s scheduled premiere of the film. A Dog’s Purpose, based on the best-selling book of the same name, goes wide into theaters on Jan. 27th. The move to keep the press at bay comes as those involved with the film have spoken up in both protest and disgust at what happened during a second unit shoot in Winnipeg that occurred last fall.

Those who have said they were disturbed or outraged included producer Gavin Polone, Josh Gad (who provides the voice of the dog), trailer voice talent Anthony Mendez and the film’s own director Lasse Hallstrom. Whomever took the video only made it public this week. The handlers for the dog on the video (who we’re told also supplied the dog) was Birds & Animals Unlimited, an Acton, CA-based company that has been under heavy scrutiny for a long time from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA also asked that the film be boycotted because of how the dog was handled during the shoot.

‘A Dog’s Purpose’ Director Lasse Hallstrom & Voice Actor Josh Gad Upset Over “Disturbing” Video Of Terrified Dog

Lasse Hallstrom, the director behind A Dog’s Purpose and Josh Gad who is one of the main actors of the film took to social media to voice their disgust that a dog was forced into the water during a second unit shoot on the film. The newly released video from TMZ shows a terrified German shepherd being pushed into the water by his handler as it tries to scale back up a wall, and then another part of the video clip shows the dog struggling to stay afloat and then disappearing under water while handlers scream to get to the animal and someone yelling, “Cut it! Cut it! Cut it!” What is not known is how many takes the dog went through before slipping under the water.

Hallstrom, who Tweeted out that he did not witness it, called the actions on the video “disturbing” while Gad said he was “shaken” by it. Gad said he has contacted “the production team and studio to ask for an explanation of these disturbing images.” Hallstrom wrote more tweets as the night went on saying this was his third film about dogs and that he is a “lifelong animal lover” and that “we were all committed to providing a loving, respectful and safe environment for all animals in the film.” Earlier today, the film’s producer Gavin Polone spoke to Deadline. He was clearly outraged and said he was “horrified” by what he saw in the video. The question is how many takes did the second unit make the dog do before he slipped under the water, unable to stay afloat any longer.

The dog and the particular handler on the video were supplied by Birds & Animals Unlimited, which People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it has been working hard to expose for some time. Universal Pictures has completely stuck their heads in the sand and are MIA after repeated tries to get a comment.

I've been hearing about this the last couple days but I hadn't watched the video yet. Completely reckless and harmful and aggravating on every possible level. To people in the industry it's just something to aim your camera at but for me, it's a reason to smash someone's knee with a ballpeen.

That's rough. I know they got him and he's ok but he's not a person and he doesn't understand what's going on. He's thinking "These motherfuckers are trying to drown me, I better run." They should have found another way. Not sure how they do this type of scenes in films.

How about they just stop putting animals in dramatic danger for cheap theatrical pops? No film has ever been made better because they abused or killed an animal, they're treated as props and they're not. If the dog's own handler treats it that way in front of camera crews, you don't want to see what is done off camera.

Life is terrible as an adult. I remember loving Milo and Otis as a kid until I got older and read how fucked up the making of that movie really is. Animal movies are more sad now.

PETA Protests At Multiple U.S. Theaters On Opening Night
A Dog’s Purpose (PETA Protesting in Theaters) Fullsi10
More than 50 protesters demonstrated tonight outside the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood to air their grievances over the family film A Dog’s Purpose. Carrying signs that read, “A Dog’s Purpose Isn’t to Be a Prop” and “For Dog’s Sake Don’t See A Dog’s Purpose,” they were citing charges that a German shepherd named Hercules was subjected to “cruel and inhumane treatment” on the film’s set when the Amblin/Walden Media/Universal movie shot in Winnipeg in the fall.

The protest in front of theaters from New York to Los Angeles and even in Winnipeg was organized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and comes after the organization had called for a boycott of the film shortly after a video was posted on TMZ showing the German shepherd supplied and handled by Birds & Animals Unlimited was forced against its will into the water on the set of the film. After forcing the dog into the water, the handler then pulled him up by his neck. Later the dog is shows struggling to stay afloat as a handler tries to coax him to her and the dog goes under water as those around him panic to get to him and someone is heard screaming, “Cut it! Cut it! Cut it!” The dog apparently was was under water for 4 seconds before being brought to the surface, according to the film’s producer Gavin Polone.

PETA has been targeting Hollywood supplier B&UA for some time. The footage caused an outcry from dog lovers across nation as the video went viral, as well as its own filmmakers and those involved in the film including Josh Gad, who voices the dog . Since then, the studio, production company and producer of the film as well as the dog’s author said they had seen the entire video and the dog was not harmed in the making of the film. Although the producer did say “mistakes were made.”

“This film was made to appeal to dog lovers,” said Lisa Lange, SVP of PETA. “None of us enjoy seeing a dog tormented the way this dog was in this scene. You can feel and see the dog’s fear and imagine his terror when he was submerged underwater. There is no excuse for this abuse or for the filmmakers defending it.”

Other theaters where they protested included the Gallery Place in Washington, D.C. and the AMC Empire 25 in New York. A Dog’s Purpose had its previews last night in 2,255 locales at 6 PM and grossed only $455K. Family moviegoing days are Saturday and Sunday, so we are waiting to see how this one will fare.
