Blade Runner 2049 ($259,239,658) Harris10

Denis Villeneuve is in negotiations to direct the sequel to Blade Runner, with Harrison Ford previously asked but now confirmed to be reprising his role as Rick Deckard. Ridley Scott, who directed the iconic 1982 sci-fi pic for Warner Bros, is aboard to executive produce for Alcon Entertainment.

The film is scheduled to start principal photography in summer 2016. Hampton Fancher — who co-wrote the original with David Peoples — and Michael Green have written the original screenplay based on an idea by Fancher and Scott. The story takes place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 film, which was based on the Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?

Alcon acquired most franchise rights to Blade Runner in 2011 from producer Bud Yorkin to produce prequels and sequels. Scott said in an MTV News interview over the winter that Ford was keen on the script but didn’t go so far as confirming the actor’s return to the role of a retired cop in a futuristic Los Angeles (it was 2019). There were faint rumors that Scott would direct, but now Alcon’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson have tapped Villeneuve, who gained cred with Alcon helming its taut 2013 drama Prisoners starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman and who just wrapped the Mexican cartel drama Sicario with Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin.

“We are honored that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve, who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally on Prisoners,” Kosove and Johnson said. “Hampton and Michael, with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team.”

Yorkin will serve as a producer on the Blade Runner sequel along with Kosove and Johnson. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will co-produce. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.

Denis.........I expect so much more from you than a sequel starring a 74 year old Harrison Ford.

Apparently working with Stallone on Expendables 3 made Ford think he needs to make sequels to all of his franchises from more than 30 years ago, first Star Wars, now this and he's always trying to reclaim Indy. What next American Graffiti 3?

Talk turned to Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner sequel, and it will no doubt come as a relief to learn that Ridley Scott will indeed have the final cut on the movie. "I always have final cut on everything, really. Partly because I’m very user-friendly. I always believe when you’re given X amount of money by someone to f—k around with and make a movie, you can’t draw lines in the sand. If I was an investor and you did that to me, I’d remove your ankles. So don’t do the auteur s–t. I respect the guy for giving the money and I respect the studio for saying, “Yeah, you want to do this, here we go." Scott went on to confirm that Ryan Gosling will indeed star in the follow-up alongside Harrison Ford and revealed that it was the script which managed to win over the latter. As for plot details, he had this to say about when the movie will be set. "It was 2017, so coming back it’ll be 2047, roughly. As young as you can play Ryan Gosling. He’s 34, but he looks 27 when he’s doing his push-ups. So maybe 2050." Oh, and Deckard was a definitely a Replicant, right? "Of course he’s a bloody Replicant! He’s going to have to admit it." But wait, don't they die after four years? "I’m not going to tell you. You’ll have to see the story. It’ll all make sense."

BLADE RUNNER 2 Starts Filming in July with Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling
"LOS ANGELES, CA, JANUARY 25, 2016 – Sony Pictures Releasing International will distribute Alcon Entertainment’s follow-up to Ridley Scott’s 1982 masterpiece BLADE RUNNER in all overseas territories in all media; with Warner Bros. Pictures distributing in North America and Canada through its output agreement with Alcon, it was announced by Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Denis Villeneuve is directing the film starring Ryan Gosling (THE BIG SHORT) and Harrison Ford (STAR WARS) who is reprising his role as Rick Deckard. Hampton Fancher (co-writer of the original) and Michael Green have written the original screenplay based on an idea by Fancher and Ridley Scott.

The story takes place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 original. Alcon Entertainment acquired the film, television and ancillary franchise rights to BLADE RUNNER in 2011 from the late producer Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin to produce prequels and sequels to the iconic science-fiction thriller. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will produce along with Johnson and Kosove. Bud Yorkin will receive producer credit. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.

Ridley Scott will also executive produce. The film marks Villenueve’s third collaboration with 13-time Oscar nominee Roger Deakins, who will serve as cinematographer, following Alcon’s PRISONERS and the hit drug-trafficking drama SICARIO, which brought Deakins his latest Oscar nomination. Principal photography on Villenueve’s new BLADE RUNNER film is scheduled to begin in July 2016. States Kosove and Johnson: “We are excited to work with Tom Rothman, Michael Lynton and then entire Sony team on this very special project as well as maintaining our important and long-standing relationship with our domestic partner Warner Bros. Pictures.” States Tom Rothman: “At Sony, we have made a strong commitment to the international marketplace. We know of few projects with greater international potential than the long dreamed of sequel to Blade Runner, especially given the all-star creative team Andrew and Broderick have assembled. We are deeply grateful to everyone at Alcon, Denis and Ridley for entrusting us with such a gift. Working on a Blade Runner film also fulfills a long-time personal ambition, as I deeply love and admire the original.”

Among its many distinctions, BLADE RUNNER has been singled out as one of the greatest movies of all time by innumerable polls and media outlets, and overwhelmingly as the greatest science-fiction film of all time by a majority of genre publications. Released in 1982 by Warner Bros. Pictures, BLADE RUNNER was adapted by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples from Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and was directed by Ridley Scott, following his landmark film, Alien. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction) and is now regarded by media and cineastes as one of the greatest movies of all time and the defining vision of the cyberpunk genre.

In 1993, BLADE RUNNER was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1993 and is frequently taught in university courses. In 2007, it was named the 2nd most visually influential film of all time by the Visual Effects Society."

Solo and Dekker, so you know another Indy has got to coming next. Who doesn't love a 75 year old action star?

Ford and Stallone must have had good talks about the glory days on Expendables 3 cause they're both got the same career plan.

How the fuck have you, in the few years you've been talking about movies and TV on forums, not come across Blade Runner, and thought "ooh, Harrison Ford in a Ridley Scott film. Maybe that's something I should watch?"

It's a very disciplined skill. I've been recommending great movies and tv shows to him for probably over five years now and I still don't think he's seen anything made before 2000. Razz

That is true. If it goes on the list, it's never seen or heard from again, just like Abe's last three dates.

‘Blade Runner’ Sequel Claims MLK Weekend 2018
Alcon Entertainment just announced that the release date for the sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 Blade Runner will be January 12, which is the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend. As previously announced, Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, reprising his role as Rick Deckard, will star. Denis Villeneuve is directing. Warner Bros. has domestic rights while Sony Pictures Releasing International is handling overseas.

The only other title dated for the 2018 MLK frame is Paramount’s animated sequel Sherlock Gnomes. Given that film’s play for families, there shouldn’t be any stiff rivalry here with Blade Runner 2.

The sequel is written by Hampton Fancher, who co-wrote the original, and Michael Green and is based on a story by Fancher and Ridley Scott. The story picks up several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 original.

Principal photography is scheduled for July, 2016. Multi-Oscar nominated cinematographer Roger Deakins, who worked with Villeneuve on Prisoners and Sicario, is lensing.

Scott will serve as EP. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will also serve as EPs along with Bill Carraro.

Robin Wright Joins ‘Blade Runner’ Sequel in Key Role
Blade Runner 2049 ($259,239,658) Robin-10

Robin Wright is in final negotiations to join Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling in Alcon’s “Blade Runner” sequel.

Ford is reprising his role of detective Rick Deckard, with “Sicario” helmer Denis Villeneuve directing. The untitled film will bow Jan. 12, 2018.

Sony Pictures Releasing International announced last month that it will distribute in all overseas territories in all media. Alcon has a longstanding domestic output agreement with Warner Bros.

The story, written by Hampton Fancher (co-writer of the original) and Michael Green and based on a story by Fancher and Ridley Scott, continues several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 original — which was set in a dystopian 2019 Los Angeles. It is unknown whom Wright will be playing and also unknown if she will be playing a human or replicant.

The original film, based on the 1968 Philip K. Dick story “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?,” starred Ford as an ex-police officer tracking down escaped genetically engineered replicants who had returned to Earth illegally in order to extend their four-year life spans. In 1993, the film was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

Principal photography on the sequel is scheduled to begin in July, with cinematographer Roger Deakins reuniting with Villeneuve on the project. Alcon Entertainment acquired the film, television and ancillary franchise rights in 2011 from the late producer Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin to produce prequels and sequels to the iconic science fiction thriller. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will produce along with Alcon co-chiefs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. Bud Yorkin will receive producer credit.

The studio had been after Wright for some time, but her complicated “House of Cards” schedule made it appear unlikely that she would be available. Sources indicate Alcon was able to work out schedule issues, and a deal is expected to close.

Unfortunately you're going to have to break your cardinal rule and watch a movie older than you if you want to truly grasp what's happening.

FYI, there are like a half dozen different cuts of BR available. Cool

In the age of streaming you literally have no excuse to have such a weak knowledge of film history. Evil or Very Mad

In my day I'd walk two miles to the video store and carry back bags of VHS. Kids today......

I was no different. When I was 10-12yo, my local was about a 40 minute walk away. Grab 10 weeklies for $10, chuck in my back pack, and skate home - it was all up hill, so I carried my skateboard there, and road it home.

It was the same deal for me, 5 movies for 5 days for $5 so I'd get 10. Now every movie ever made is available with a few clicks and somehow kids are even more ignorant today but I seriously blame smart phones for the massive devolution of the intelligence rate since '07. But back on track, if we could carry bags of movies home for miles, kids today can type in a few search words.....

I used to do the same but not as often. I used to walk 30 mins to my local Blockbuster and get 2 or 3 DVDs.

Is it a good movie at least? I thought you didn't like Ford, Wylde?

I don't like him and it's not what I would call I good movie but millions of others strongly disagree with me cause it's a sci-fi classic to everybody else, you might enjoy it. I just know that my policy is that I do not start watching a film franchise with the sequel, like books and tv shows, I only start at the beginning.

I enjoyed the first much more when I re-watched it last year at the cinemas. I hadn't seen it in over 10 years and didn't remember much.

As with a lot of things, it's praised for how it looks, the style etc, as apposed to story etc.

Style over Substance, the way of the world.

I like the score in the teaser. Is that from the first movie or is it something new?

Unfortunately you did because of Guardians people keep giving him acting work.

Ana de Armas, this girl is getting work. I've seen her in Knock Knock, War Dogs and now here. Not to mention she's sexy as hell.

Trailer was a little confusing, I think fans of the first film might be more excited.

Ana is also in the boxing film Hands of Stone which hit Netflix a few weeks back.

I can't get excited over any sci-fi or action film starring a 75 year old man, it's just sad. I'm always worried Ford is gonna break a hip when he's changing the stud out on his diamond earring, let alone running down Replicants.

Blumhouse Has Plenty To Smile About As ‘Happy Death Day’ Scares Up $26M+ Opening Against '2049'
Blade Runner 2049 ($259,239,658) Happy-10
A microbudget horror film, Blumhouse/Universal’s Happy Death Day, is beating the very expensive sci-fi Alcon Entertainment/Sony sequel Blade Runner 2049‘s second weekend respectively $26.2M to $13.8M.

On some level, the mere result of that has to be a studio marketing chief’s nightmare: For all the efforts to build a massive event film in Blade Runner 2049, the motion picture is then undermined by a high-concept genre pic with a fresh face cast. Furthermore, Happy Death Day is pulling in a younger crowd with 55% under 25. Months ago we all assumed that Blade Runner 2049 would carry us through October. Who knew Happy Death Day would win this weekend?

Paramount sniffed danger when Blumhouse planted the title on this date, looking to grab Jennifer Lawrence’s femme fans away. At one point, Darren Aronofsky’s mother! was scheduled to open here, but then moved to Sept. 15. Indeed, per ComScore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak, women under 25 are the biggest demo at Happy Death Day with 33%. Overall, Happy Death Day gets a B CinemaScore which is outstanding for a horror movie (‘A’s are rare for the genre) and that grade outstrips the CinemaScores for Blumhouse’s Ouija movies (both Cs), Unfriended (C), The Purge (C), and most of the Paranormal Activity canon with the exception of Paranormal Activity 2 which earned a B. In addition being a horror movie with a fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating (68%) also assists in spinning turnstiles.

Happy Death Day marks the third best start this year for a Blumhouse title after Split ($40M) and Get Out ($33.3M), not to mention all three films are original movies, not sequels. The genre house’s gift, like Marvel, is that they know their audience’s wants, needs and turnoffs. Moviegoing begets moviegoing, and Happy Death Day had the great fortune of being a trailer that played before It for the last six weeks, so the pic received plenty of exposure before its potential target audience and then some. Before you can say, “Well Paramount did that too with mother!”, moviegoers are smart enough to decipher between a real horror movie and an arthouse gonzo thriller. Since dropping in June, Happy Death Day‘s original online trailer was viewed more than 157M times to date. In addition, Happy Death Day was the only film advertiser with spots in front of Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” video, which broke YouTube/Vevo records with more than 43M views in 24 hours.

The cast and filmmakers participated in the opening night festivities of Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights, where The Horrors of Blumhouse featured a Happy Death Day-themed maze with the killer from the film. Social media monitor RelishMix was over the moon about the stunt: “Universal tagged alongside 13 Reasons Why star, Dylan Minnette as he went through the maze.  This is a great and unique tactic, to use a star who isn’t even in the film and target his fans, many of whom saw him in 13 Reasons among other works.” In addition, RelishMix noticed heading into the weekend that positive word of mouth outweighed the negative: “Fans looking forward to Happy Death Day describe it as a combination of Groundhog Day and Scream.  Moviegoers understand that this isn’t meant to be the scariest movie in the world, but the re-occurring day plot seems to have fans excited.”

Spots for Happy Death Day aired during genre TV series such as Fear of the Walking Dead, American Horror Story, The Exorcist and Supernatural. Of note, there were four sequential spots telling an unfolding narrative in a media stunt within the Bachelor in Paradise premiere in August.

Alcon Entertainment/Sony’s Blade Runner 2049 is -58% with $13.8M and a running 10-day cume of $59.3M. We deconstructed quite greatly last weekend in two pieces what went sideways here commercially for this sci-fi sequel which cost in excess of $155M net, and the numbers speak for themselves. That said, we can’t chastise Alcon’s ambition to make this gorgeous, riveting piece of cinema that’s very faithful in all aspects to the original Ridley Scott 1982 film. As streaming encroaches on theatergoing, more creative risks like Blade Runner 2049 should be made, because if the industry fails to do so, we’ll just be watching comic book movies for all eternity and they’ll be no reason to head out to the theater. Blade Runner 2049 is best savored on the big screen.  True, a PG-13 rating and shorter film could have gone a long way in regards to getting Marvel fanboys in the room, or a marketing campaign that reintroduced the brand to a new generation. A cheaper film would enable us to size up the pic’s profitability in a better light. Hopefully awards season carries Blade Runner 2049‘s prestige to a higher ground than on the box office charts. On the bright side, through 10-days, Blade Runner 2049 is pacing 36% ahead of Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival at the same point in time which ended its stateside run at $100.5M.

Sony is hoping that Japan and China deliver greatly to push their foreign end to a profit after their net $90M investment. In the more mature markets where moviegoers remember the original Blade Runner, read Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom, there’s a rich ancillary in the studio’s Pan BSkyB TV deal. Ditto for Japan as well. The Culver City studio is first in the waterfall in regards to the pic’s revenue stream, will receive a share of global revenues and is collecting a distribution fee on overseas ticket sales.

LMFAO! That's awesome......I've never even heard of Happy Death Day and they've been talking constantly about BR2 for three years now.

Microbudget horror continues to obliterate overhyped, overbudget CGI fests. When will Hollywood learn from Blumhouse???

And stop banking on 75 year olds to revive their decades old franchises you dumb bastards.... Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz
