Jake Gyllenhaal is ready to bring a little mystery to the Spider-Man universe.

The actor is in talks to play the classic Marvel villain Mysterio in the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko introduced Mysterio in the comics in 1964. A special effects expert, Quentin Beck used his talents to create elaborate illusions to commit crimes and to fight Spider-Man.

Tom Holland starred as the Marvel hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming and recently appeared in Avengers: Infinity War. Jon Watts is returning to direct the sequel to Homecoming, which earned $880 million worldwide. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, two of the screenwriters behind the first movie, are back as well.

Gyllenhaal has an interesting history with Spider-Man. Original Spider-Man star Toby Maguire injured his back while shooting Seabiscuit in between Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Gyllenhaal was briefly considered to take over the role if Maguire could not resume his duties. Maguire was able to return to work, and the filmmakers put a joke about Spider-Man hurting his back into the sequel.

Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is set for July 5, 2019.

Affleck fucked around so much on The Batman that Gyllenhaal is now taking a Spider-Man villain role cause he isn't waiting around anymore.

And here I was waiting for Gyllenhaal to stop making nothing but biopics and then he goes and does this...... Mad Mad Mad

I was against Keaton as a Spider-Man villain and he was great, so I will reserve judgement

Jake looks annoyed and like he's given up in that picture, he's like "I don't get to be Batman now?!!? I guess I'll do a shitty Spider-Man movie instead".

Tyger's got a point though. I know Jake would nail the role but he deserves so much better than Mysterio is all.

Again I said the same of Vulture and they made it work.

I think Jake has it in him to bring Mysterio to his level.

I find that BL's work is far better than the final product on screen about 95% of the time.

The studios should hire BL to make their posters but they can't even manage to not fuck those up.

Tom Holland Reveals Next 'Spider-Man' Movie Is Called 'Far From Home'
Spider-Man: Far From Home ($1.1 Billion Worldwide Box Office) Spider11
The next Spider-Man movie is keeping on brand with its "home" theme.

Tom Holland revealed on Instagram Saturday that Spider-Man: Far From Home is the title of the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. Holland also continued the fun he's been having on social media, noting that following the events of Avengers: Infinity War, the idea of a Spider-Man sequel seems rather impossible. (If you've seen it, you know why.)

The Far From Home title reflects that this will be the first Spider-Man solo movie to take the wallcrawler out of New York and put him in other parts of the world, such as London.

Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Far From Home opens July 5, 2019 and will be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to follow Avengers 4, which opens two months earlier. Homecoming director Jon Watts, who returns for the sequel, told THR last year that the film would see Spider-Man dealing with the fallout from Infinity War.

Spider-Man: Far From Home also stars Jake Gyllenhaal as the classic Spider-Man villain Mysterio, and is written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Spider-Man: Homecoming earned more than $880 million worldwide and helped solidify Holland's version Peter Parker as a Marvel fan favorite.

Next up, Marvel Studios has Ant-Man and The Wasp out July 6. It's followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019, leading up to May's Avengers 4, which follows the cliffhanger ending of Infinity War.

I got around to watching this finally. That end credit scene was crazy. The 3rd one is going to be interesting after that. And I was surprised to see Simmons return as J.J. Jameson too. He's perfect for the role but I never thought he'd play the character again.

Mysterio was pretty much what I expected. I have no idea why Jake agreed to this. A typical villain on a kiddie Spider-Man movie. I guess he didn't want to be in a leading superhero movie and this is one way to avoid that. Maybe DC will still take him for something better.

I saw this when it came out and bought the 4K for $8, just happened to watch it last night.

No complaints, it’s a fun movie, Jake gets to be likable and a dick, good times.

Jake is good in anything but the role was beneath him.

I'm really thinking now that maybe after the third movie, they should consider recasting Holland for a grown up version of the character without rebooting it. Endgame would have been a great way to do this, Peter doesn't get dusted and ages 5 years and we could have had a great sequel.

That statement is beyond true because I have seen Bubble Boy dozens of times and he always makes me laugh.

You'd instantly change your mind if Matt Murdock showed up as Peter's lawyer in the next movie.

Wait, so was Peter still in high school with his friends after those five years?
