Sicario ($84,025,816) Sicari10

In Mexico, Sicario means hitman.

In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent [Emily Blunt] is enlisted by an elite government task force official [Josh Brolin] to aid in the escalating war against drugs.

Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past [Benicio Del Toro], the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.

Fantastic cast, looks like a solid film that was written by Taylor Sheridan who SOA fans will remember fondly as Deputy Hale and was directed by Denis Villeneuve who made Prisoners and Enemy with Gyllenhaal. Been hearing rave reviews about this and its being compared to Traffic.

Benecio and Emily, together again!

I remember when Taylor decided to leave SOA, so he wanted to write.

Good for him, the film looks gorgeous.

Dennis probably got Conrad Hall back as the DP, who also worked on Prisoners.

Correction, Roger Deakins.

Conrad Hall died in 2003, he was DP Road to Perdition and scores of other great films.

Taylor's writing career is starting to blow up, both of his scripts have gone directly to the Blacklist and his follow-up to Sicario is a film called Comancheria starring Ben Foster, Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges.

‘Sicario’ Sequel in the Works at Lionsgate
Sicario ($84,025,816) Sicari10
Lionsgate is developing a sequel to “Sicario” that will center on Benicio Del Toro’s mysterious hitman.

The project is being overseen by Taylor Sheridan, the writer of the acclaimed thriller. Director Denis Villeneuve is also involved, although it’s early in the process and it’s not clear if he would come on board to direct.

“Before the release of this movie, I was talking to Denis and I said what happened to this character?” said Patrick Wachsberger, co-chair of the studio’s motion picture group. “Where is Benicio going?”

The studio executive was thrilled Monday after “Sicario” debuted to a sizzling $401,288 last weekend from just six theaters. Its per-screen average of $66,881 is the highest of the year.

The film centers on a steely FBI agent (Emily Blunt) who finds herself involved in an off-the-books operation to bring down a Mexican drug kingpin. Josh Brolin co-stars as a morally flexible government operative. Lionsgate is planning an Oscar campaign, Wachsberger said.

“This movie has multiple Oscar potential — best movie, best director, best cinematography, best music, and, of course, the actors,” he said. “All of the characters feel real.”
He added that he hoped that “Sicario” with its eerie shots of nighttime raids and violent border cronfrontations might finally score an Oscar for Roger Deakins, who is zero for twelve despite nominations for the likes of “Unbroken,” “Fargo,” and “Skyfall,” calling the award, “past due.”

Wachsberger also agreed with critics who have been predicting Oscar love for Blunt and calling her performance as tough agent forced to question her beliefs one of the finest of her career.

“She is totally credible,” said Wachsberger. “You end the movie wondering what’s going to happen? What happen to her character? Is she becoming a wolf?”

Despite the strong box office response, Lionsgate is going to roll out “Sicario” at a deliberate pace. It expands to eleven cities and roughly 65 locations next weekend, before going wide on Oct. 2.

“This is a movie that needs word of mouth,” said Wachsberger. “It’s not an easy title. ‘Sicario’? You have to Google that. You’re not going to wear a t-shirt of that.”

I know I'm probably still the only fan of The Wolfman remake but one of the big reasons I enjoyed the film so much was for Benicio and Emily's chemistry. I'm glad to see that they are going to keep making movies together.

Amazing! Great performance by Emily and Benicio. I'd love to see a sequel now that I've seen it.

I knew there was more to what the CIA was up to but I didn't expect it to go that way with Alejandro. That was a very intense scene with a twist, a made a call I didn't think he'd make given what he went through. He made him understand what it was like for him though. "Finish your meal." Not after that he won't. Brutal!

All things considered, I agree with what CIA's operation. Alejandro decision wasn't necessary but as he said, it was personal for him. I don't know why Kate was so against it but I'd love to see where we find her if she returns for a sequel. Great movie!

It's a very violent movie that really doesn't pull any punches on how our government is handling Mexican cartels. Fantastic acting all around, solid characters, great writing. I was never bored, pretty much edge of my seat the whole time. Really wild movie.

As wild as the movie was and brutal and full of crazy action sequences though I think that my favorite moments involved Benicio's character sitting at a table. He's such a criminally underrated actor and once you see this movie you'll understand the moments I'm referring to.

I don't know how or why Blunt would come back, her character didn't exactly end on the happiest of terms lol. Dinner with the Jefe, I knew it was coming and I cheered when it happened. I'm totally fucked up.

Well, I'm hoping she understands how it is now. Maybe she'll be like him in the second one and do things his way. That said, it could also work without her but I liked her so I'd love to see her come back.

If they do a time jump it could account for the fact that things probably happened like she was warned, things just continued to get worse and eventually she couldn't just stay with the clean up crew. Sicario would work as a good origins tale for her if they do bring her back but as you said they can focus on Benicio's character and I would be just as happy.

OK. So, it was entertaining. Looked great. Well shot. Loved the infra-red shots. The were integrated well.

Loved the cast and acting. Benicio Del Toro is a fucking beast. Dude has screen presence out the wazoo. That final scene, as he's walking away from Blunt's apartment, then turns back and gives her the stink-eye as she's pointing her pistol at him? Best piece of acting in the whole movie. Nothing but a look. Fucking chilling. Plus he gave The Punisher a wet willy. LOL.

Brolin had nothing to work with. Such a shame. This guy is fucking incredible, and they give him nothing more than cliche-CIA guy.

Blunt was the same. She's great, but I felt like she served no other purpose than to give the movie-goers a sympathetic character to latch on to.

Story was interesting. Great subject matter, but would have preferred another 45 minutes of run-time, and more in-depth look at the inner workings of how the cartel operates, and how the US Govt works. This script handed over to a more experienced writer, or supervised/assisted by someone that new that world first hand would have made it phenomenal. Also would have addressed the lack of character depth for Blunt and Brolin.

Fun flick, but was essentially a story about a Mexican lawyer whose family was killed by a cartel, so he then becomes the worlds most competent and accurate assassin, and a spook for the CIA, so he can use their assets and a team of Delta operators to re-infiltrate the Cartel, and get revenge by murdering two kids and their mother?

Pretty fucking ridiculous.

I just stumbled across this:

It’s just another day on the job for a band of badass war zone rescue workers as they defy death and confront war’s absurdities. The setting is 1995, “somewhere in the Balkans.” Over the course of 24 breathless hours, Mambrú (Benicio del Toro), leads his team of humanitarians—including hard-bitten, wisecracking veteran B (Tim Robbins) and new recruit Sophie (Melanie Thierry)—as they deal with a most unexpected crisis, layers of bureaucratic red tape, and the reappearance of Mambrú’s old flame (Olga Kurylenko). Through it all, the group handles the less-than-glamorous realities of life in a combat zone the only way they know how: with selfless bravery and a healthy dose of irreverent humor.

Tarantino doesn't have a lot of Latino characters. In fact the only two I can think of are in Deathproof; Vanessa Ferlito and Rosario Dawson. Also Butch's lady in Pulp Fiction.

There's also Bob the Mexican from The Hateful Eight but he definitely doesn't have many Latin characters, which is a shame cause Vanessa and Rosario looked damned good in DP.

A few weeks ago QT started talking about a Bonnie and Clyde style film set in 1930's Australia which has got to peak your interest, apparently QT is obsessed with trying to make a movie in your country now. But in my opinion it should be set in NZ so it can star Zoe. Cool

For real? What don't you like about him? You should check out Burn Notice. Jeffrey Donovan + Bruce Campbell. Bruce Campbell was really good, too. His character his hilarious but not stupid funny. It's good stuff! Rusty has the right idea. I'm gonna get the show on bloo soon. Needs to watch it all from beginning to end. It's one of the few series I can watch repeatedly.

Yep. It's why it's taken me so long to re-watch it. I was hoping they would have done a full Blu package once the show wrapped, but I doubt it'll happen. iTunes is the only HD purchasing option.

Season 2 and the Sam Ax movie were the only Blu releases. Rarely is it a good sign when a later season gets a Blu release before the first season (much like Rescue Me).

I find Donovan very disturbing in a Patrick Bateman type of way. He's got cold, dead Jeffrey Dahmler eyes. When the bodies are discovered under his house, I will not be surprised.
